Is Seuly Matias for real with his power? Think he is tops in minors for HR this season.  Think he can hit for average too??
Eric A Longenhagen
3:24
Oh it's real power. Average hit? Probably not. Still could get to that power, though. Joey Gallo was a 3 WAR guy last year as a .209 hitter.

Is it possible for a guy to have a tool 4 standard deviations above the mean? Have you ever considered giving a guy an 85 or 90 tool?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:24
I think that's just noise

How much history is there of guys improving their slider while already in the MLB? I'm thinking specifically of Luis Castillo who has great changeup feel but he doesn't look like he has feel for a slider and I'm wondering how much hope there is that it can become competitive.
Eric A Longenhagen

Luis Severino was a fastball/changeup guy with a hard cutter a couple years ago and now throws friggin 80 sliders. It's possible to alter that stuff. It takes several steps of identification, implementation, the player has to buy in and be able to physically make adjustments. But it's possible

Does Tebow make the majors in the next year or two? Has to be exceed many expectations so far
Eric A Longenhagen
3:27
I'm impressed with how well he has played, though he hasn't played well when compared to other minor leaguers. Because of his age, he's far less relevant for the purposes of our evaluation than he is culturally, and that's okay. He's 30 in Double-A and slugging under .400. I bet he gets to the bigs, and it'll be kind of a sideshow that I have mixed feeling about, but he's not a relevant prospect who has on-field big league value.

Who the sh** is Miguel Vargas?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:29
Lol, Vargas is a Cuban infielder in the Dodgers system with some strength-driven power. Needs better lower half incorporation to hit for power in games but the Dodgers coaches were literally asking him to make changes during the games I saw him play to try to coax it out of him. Probably a 3B/1B, gonna be a tough profile, but he's interesting. Maybe a 40 FV by the end of the year.

Have you seen or heard anything on Tyler Freeman?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:30
Indians supplemental pick in last year's draft. Saw a lot of him throughout extended. Reports are same as in HS, advanced bat, maybe he makes it work at SS, probably not much game power.
Can't read good
3:32
Eric, wouldn't it make more sense to have MLB rosters expand in July instead of September? can give some vets mid-season rest and showcase prospects heading into trade deadline
Eric A Longenhagen
3:33
Your reasons for it being beneficial are sound, but given the pace of games in September I think early expansion would create a vortex of social media complaints so vast that it'd be large enough to swallow a continent.

As prospect fans, we are obviously interested in finding "the next big thing".  New shiny things are fun.  BUT sometimes that can lead us to overvalue breakout prospects.  Do any of this year's breakout prospects stick out to you as being overvalued by fans as the next impact guy when they more likely project as contributors?  Do any stand out to you as impact players?  Thanks!!!

Henrik Clementina- no
Luis Rengifo - yes

I wrote this on a guy from each team to buy or not, it's In$ider http://insider.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/23907191/mlb-breakout-m...

Cavan Biggio didn't crack your 131, but he's tapped into power and improved bb% this year.  Has he changed?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:35
He has changed but not enough to be a 50 FV. Probably not a 2B, still has some offensive issues. 40 FV, realistically.

Are there specific things teams look for when scouting potential MLB trade acquisitions? Is there something a scouting report on JA Happ can tell you that his 10-year MLB career and Brooks Baseball can't?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:35
Yes, especially with players like  Happ who have made subtle adjustments several times during that ten year career such that huge swaths of it are now irrelevant to what he is right now

3:36
Would INF Josh Rojas (HOU) be int he 40-45 range in an updated Astros list?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:36
No

Clarke Schmidt - thumbs up or thumbs sideways?
Eric A Longenhagen
3:36
Yankees 2017 first rounder just now starting to pitch after TJ. Thumbs up, stuff is back.
3:38
Okay, I must depart. I'll be flying to DC tomorrow for the Futures Game then driving through the Northeast doing pro coverage before I head back to AZ, with a stop in Chicago on the way to see some 2019 draft guys. If you're in DC, remember Keith and Jay have a book signing the day before Futures Game. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/instagraphs/jay-jaffe-and-keith-law-in... and I think several of us are going to be there for that, so come hang out.

Until next week...
