Hi everybody and a very pleasant good afternoon (or morning) to you wherever you may be. Happy 2023 baseball season and welcome to our Opening Day chat!

Describe a realistic scenario where the Mariners win the west?
AvatarJay Jaffe

Honestly, I don't think it would take all that much — a couple of key rotation injuries to Houston and a few guys having bigger-than-expected seasons for Seattle while the Angels and Rangers don't quite get there.

Happy baseball to all.

The Mariners win a number of games in 2023 that is a larger number than the number of games that the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Angels win!

Happy Opening Day!!

Most anticipated matchup of the day?
AvatarDan Szymborski

The Who Cares Bowl between the Pirates and Reds, of course

Are you on the Kelenic hype train? I know spring training caveat and all, but he really looks like he finally figured something out.

I'm not putting my neck out after the last two years! lol

Let’s gooooooooooooooo

1:02
Are the Mariners more likely to have the MVP winner or Cy Young winner?
Alex Eisert
1:02
I think the M's have candidates for both awards but would say Cy Young because it's a more wide-open field, especially if deGrom doesn't last the whole season

It's November 2023, and everyone is saying, "Wow, I can't believe the ____ reached the World Series. None of the preseason predictions had them making it."

Arizona Diamondbacks

Not that I picked them of course

Jay, you suggested we use the reply feature, but I feel uncomfortably too organized now!

With four of us the cross-talk could get confusing! But yeah, I get its it's not like we're in the same booth next to each other and able to rely upon visual cues.

Who is your prediction for the biggest breakout M's player and also the biggest disappointment?
Davy Andrews
1:04
Cal Raleigh had such a great year last year. Projections and common sense say that'll be awfully tough to replicate.
AvatarJay Jaffe
1:06
I'll say that *maybe* this really is Kelenic's year and if it is, that could be a big deal in closing the gap between the Mariners and Astros.

Opened some baseball cards with my daughter and now we're gearing up for the games! What could be better?

Are the Red Sox more likely to finish 1st or 5th in the AL East?
Davy Andrews
1:05
I mean, we have them projected for fourth.

One player in the yankee system that will surprise everyone this year?
Alex Eisert
1:05
Jhony Brito is already surprising me! That spring performance on Sunday was electric and he seems poised to open the season as the no. 5 starter. Otherwise, for guys still in the minors and likely to stick there this year, I'd say Chaparro; showed some real pop this spring and has the potential to succeed Donaldson at 3B

is there an API that we could use with the yearly membership to pull the data? instead of logging in everytime and downloading the excel sheets??
AvatarDan Szymborski
1:06
I don't think we do, but it's something I or another one of us could suggest in a staff discussion at some point.
Alex Eisert
1:07
If you use R, the baseballr package has functions for pulling the data

Hi Dan and Jay, Good Afternoon!

I second Vijay. Hello to Dan and Jay. Alex, I got nothing for you.

small market fans complain about income disparity between market sizes, wouldn’t mlb expansion in cities like Portland, Las Vegas, and Charlotte, shrink the market share of teams like LA, SF, and ATL? SF/OAK have parts of Oregon and Nevada, LA/SD have Vegas in their tv markets. It seems like a more likely way to solve the revenue gap between small and big markets. What do you guys think?
AvatarDan Szymborski
1:07
Probably the best way would be in-market teams. Logically, there should be another team at least in the NY metropolitan area and probably in southern Cal too.
Alex Eisert
1:09
Except that the large market teams wouldn't agree to that

If forced to choose, which organization would Szym work for: the Rockies or the Royals.

Publishing this so Dan has to answer.

If we sent Dan to Kansas City we'd never hear from him again, as he'd be lost in a sea of barbecue.

You've got to take the under, but after one batter his WHIP is infinity!
