Maybe Kansas City so ppl could hit the Negro Leagues Museum and get great BBQ
AvatarDan Szymborski

Of course nobody's going to Kansas; there's no sabermetrics museum there!

UK broadcast is on BT sport, which is like Cable in the US? Most don’t have it. Just the double pay is a bit annoying, and they apparently added the blackout recently.

I haven't really heard anything about the Rays all year. What's their story this season?
AvatarJay Jaffe
12:40
they've had an insane number of injuries. Wrote about them pushing through them a few weeks ago and since then they've lost Lowe for the duration https://blogs.fangraphs.com/amid-a-slew-of-injuries-the-rays-have-surg...
AvatarDan Szymborski
12:40
That stinks. MLB's revenue from UK streaming is likely pretty small, I would think growing the product would be the larger priority.

I blame the death of the Queen, big MLB fan as we know from The Naked Gun. Charles has no clue

Waiting to hear some fun facts about postseason games where both SP have the same first name (Bieber vs. McClanahan)
AvatarDan Szymborski
12:41
Whenever there's a pitcher vs. pitcher first name ballot, the loser should have to change their spelling for a year.
The loser here would have to become Shain or Shayne.

Sabermetrics museum has to be in GeoCities. only good answer.
AvatarDan Szymborski

I do miss the lime green BBWAA page which was very GeoCities

If Bieber loses, he must go by Justin for a year.

How about we build it next door to Murray Chass' home
and everybody gets a 10% admission discount if they ding-dong-ditch him

Over/under for number of insane baserunning choices by Randy Arozarena today?
AvatarDavid Laurila
12:42
A reminder that Arozarena's steal of home was panic-induced. With two out and two strikes on the batter, all the pitcher needed to do was stay on the rubber, throw a strike down the middle, and the theft would have been nullified and the inning over.

The international postseason blackout also seems to have been impleemented midseason with no announcement (internet archive shows the old rules as recently as late august) really bad look for MLB

Has anybody tried using a VPN for this?

Which current franchise will have a decades-long playoff drought a la Mariners and why is it pittsburgh?
AvatarDavid Laurila
12:44
I have enough faith in Ben Cherington that it might not be Pittsburgh. Decent chance it will be a team from the NL Central, though.

I think the Pirates have a better situation than the Marlins.

I'm struggling to develop a strong opinion on the playoff format one way or another. Hard for me to see how one way is materially better or worse. [shrugs shoulders]
AvatarJay Jaffe
12:47
i think it's fair to reserve judgment until watching it play out. Not everyone has to have a blistering hot take. My animosity towards the format began with the loss of the tiebreakers and the lack of a reseeding after the first round. But I can see where a fan of the teams that squeak in will give a thumbs up .

Arozarena led MLB in caught stealings (12) and was third in outs on the bases (13)!
Liz
12:47
The international blackout seems like it's part of MLB cracking down on people using VPN's to get around local blackouts. But that's just going to create annoyed international fans and more people heading toward 🏴‍☠️ methods to watch because they're making it more and more of a hassle to watch legit

I feel like 99% of visitors to the Sabermetrics museum are doing it virtually, online.

I look forward to showing off my December 2003 proto-JAWS spreadsheet there and I'm guessing Dan probably has parts of his first ZiPS computer ready to put in there too. You have to BE in the presence of those to appreciate the aura, man.

I'm not donating it until we have the space set up! My old Pentium III still operates my stereo.

Eh?

There is a 3.0 WAR discrepancy between Taylor Walls' Fangraphs and Baseball Refe***** (can I say that around here?) WAR totals. That is a huge number!

Bad Bill
12:55
DL, I don't follow your "decent chance it will be ... from the NL Central" reasoning.  With most of the teams there bad, it will only take a brief spike to launch an outsider to the top for a while (e.g. 2020 Reds).  What's your reasoning?
AvatarDavid Laurila
12:55
I'm less bullish on the Reds farm system than maybe I should be, and there is little evidence that ownership truly wants to win.

Jay, what are your feelings about Boston? This is a safe space
AvatarJay Jaffe
12:59
The short version is that after going to college in Providence and living there for a couple years afterwards while commuting to Boston for an internship and a girlfriend i decided I didn't want to move there after my car was stolen there TWICE. Chose NYC where I wouldn't need a car, and 27 1/2 years later I have no regrets.

Tigers, Royals, Angels, Rockies have to be in the convo as candidates for long playoff droughts
AvatarDavid Laurila
12:59
If their new-to-the-big-leagues talent matures as expected, and they add a quality pitcher or two, the Royals could very well win the AL Central within the next handful of seasons.
