Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Brad Johnson
12:01
Hey folks, we'll get started in a few minutes. Keep the questions coming.
Balking Back
12:04
What exactly is the re-injury/adjacent injury prognosis on a "stress reaction" in the scapula?
Brad Johnson
12:04
I can't really speak to "exactly" as I'm not a medical professional.
12:05
Pitchers who suffer this particular injury seem to have a high rate of recurrence. Brandon McCarthy said he had it 5 times. But he also said it didn't affect his ability.
deGrom's other injuries last season were more concerning to me

12:05
Who do you see closing for the Padres?  I recently read it would be Robert Suarez, but do you think he runs with the role all season?
Brad Johnson
12:06
Regardless of who closes, the guy I want is Dinelson Lamet. He's finally going to be used in the right role (i.e. high leverage RP).
12:07
The comp I keep making is Andrew Kittredge.
Last season, he was a Top 20 roto reliever with only 8 saves
12:08
But he also had 9 wins, 77 K, a 1.88 ERA, and 0.98 WHIP.
12:09
Lamet might be a little worse on the ERA and WHIP - at least it's hard to project those rates for anyone. He should hit 100 K or close to it. And he'll be used as a multi-inning guy in a lot of tight-scoring games. 10 W and 10 SV feels well within reach
I unfortunately don't have any good information on Suarez so I can't really comment on what to expect from him.

12:11
Are there any 1st and 3rd basemen available at the trade deadline for the Brewers to target?
Brad Johnson
12:11
I've been asked to stick to fantasy, so I'll just say I really like their internal options. They fit the roster well.
12:13
I'm also a sucker for Jace Peterson. He's a league average utility man. Urias showed well last season, I think Rowdy has a breakout in him, and Hiura is still young enough to rebound. He had a massive spring.
Matt
12:13
Keibert Ruiz or Omar Narvaez?
Brad Johnson
12:13
Oh, Keibert without a doubt.
I'm taking Pedro Severino over Narvaez.
12:14
I could very well be wrong, but Severino is a better defender and he has extremely encouraging Statcast numbers. If I get around to a bold predictions piece, he'll be on it.
Quarantino Martinez
12:14
Hi Brad. Now that they're officially Opening Day Material, where would you slot Bobby Witt and Julio Rodriguez in an AL only OBP league?
Brad Johnson
12:15
Witt's going pretty high at the moment, and I can only imagine JRod's going to jump beyond all reasonable expectations too.
12:16
I don't have Only ADPs internalized. In mixed, you have to hunt Witt around pick 60 now. Maybe as early as 50. And I think it's a viable gamble. Rodriguez is still an option around pick 110.
Witt's earliest pick in NFBC was 35. 108 for JRod.

12:17
Which one of the following would you bench: Nick Catellanos, Seiya Suzuki, Michael Brantley, Enrique Hernandez, Trent Grisham, or Alex Kirilloff.
Brad Johnson
12:17
Brantley or Hernandez. It depends a bit on the rest of your roster and where Brantley hits in the lineup.
12:18
Could also bench Kirilloff initially until he shows he's mashing
Weak pitching
12:18
Alcantara for Cease and DeSclafani, who says no? (12-team H2H league, no wins category)
Brad Johnson
12:18
I might not be the right person to ask for this because I straight up don't want to roster Cease.
12:20
I'm not confident the lower walk rate was from a command gain. My read of the data is he just shoved more cookies and got away with it. He's a fly ball pitcher with a history of home run problems. I'll let someone else take that gamble.

12:20
Who should we draft now for closer/saves in Baltimore?
Brad Johnson
12:20
Unless it's an AL Only league, don't.
The Orioles already weren't going to have a set closer. They're just going to use whichever of their best relievers are available anytime the score is within 3 or they have a lead of any kind.
12:21
Paul Fry, Dillon Tate, Jorge Lopez, and Felix Bautista are the guys to plop on a watchlist. Even if a true closer emerges from that group, you're unlikely to regret missing them.
12:22
It's kind of like a Coors Field situation. We know Alex Colome is closing, but we're still not rostering him because there just isn't any upshot.
Jeremy
12:22
Hey, who do you think has a bigger impact in 2022: Bryson Stott or Jose Miranda?
Brad Johnson
12:22
Stott.
12:23
I did have a dream the Twins traded Miranda to Oakland so I had to take a moment and confirm that didn't happen.
12:24
Stott's big advantage is he can play defense. Miranda isn't quite an embarrassment out there, but every evaluator will tell you he's basically positionless.
FanGraphs has a good comment on their prospects TLDR
"Miranda is doing the Ty France dance as a positionless masher whose hit/power combination outweighs his aggressive approach."
