How much should I over-react to Woodruff's poor outing?
Brad Johnson
12:01
Oh hi, let's jump right into it.
12:02
I didn't catch Woodruff's outing, but I see nothing that suggests a problem. He was pumping 96 in less than ideal conditions.

...and Adell...and Kirilloff...and...
Brad Johnson
12:03
Hitters go 0-for-12 all the time. Juan Soto and Mike Trout go 0-for-12 all the time. Your preseason eval of Adell and Kirilloff should remain unchanged.

How's Steven Kwan's fantasy value looking?
Brad Johnson
12:04
Kwan too hasn't changed, this sort of burst-for-high-average is his skill set. He's a hold for me. If you already own him, you need to be getting a substantial player in return.
12:05
On Twitter, we talked a bit about Grisham and Adell as trade targets for him. It might be easier to swap for dissimilar parts like Drew Rasmussen or a pair of CL candidates like Art Warren and Andrew Kittredge.

who are your pickups for the week?
Brad Johnson
12:06
So I play in very deep leagues at the moment. I need to correct that for next season so I can answer this question easier.
I grabbed a bunch of Erick Fedde in 20-team formats. Scouts are saying he's turned a corner. Skubal might be a buy opportunity after a bad start. He's flashing 4 above average pitches.

Talk to me about Kwan. How good can he really be? Impressive numbers last year and doesn't strike out much. Batting second, trying to not get overly excited
Brad Johnson
12:08
It's kind of Willians Astudillo's contact rate with Myles Straw's discipline. As a pure hitter, he could be a perennial batting champion contender. We'll see if power comes along - the shortcoming of this profile is usually that the high contact rate masks too much soft/medium contact.
If he was a hard contact machine, he would have been a Top 5 prospect.
12:09
It doesn't seem like a lot of SBs are in the cards. Enough to be useful.
I think the hope is similar to peak Jeff McNeil with a little more contact and speed.

Brad, where do you get your ideas from?
Brad Johnson
12:11
Good question! I really don't know, they just occur to me. I've been deeply into baseball since I was 6. It was always my only sport through college after which I transitioned from playing to writing (then started playing again too).

Is Danny Jansen worth replacing ruiz and bart with?
Brad Johnson
12:11
Not 100% sure if you're asking to add or subtract Jansen. He's the least interesting of the 3 names here.

I need to cut one of my backup infielders - who would you keep from Diego Castillo or David Fletcher?
Brad Johnson
12:13
Fletcher is a high floor, no ceiling guy. (also, Kwan's floor is similar to Fletcher). Castillo has a very wide range of plausible outcomes. If we're talking bench players, keep Castillo.

Time to panic?
Brad Johnson
12:14
Four days of baseball is nothing. I suspect I'll repeat this every 10 minutes or so today - whatever your evals were entering the season, they shouldn't be any different today.
A few exceptions are injuries, big gains to max EV for hitters, lost/gained velocity for pitchers, new repertoires.

12:15
Can I hit MLB pitching well enough to be an everyday player this year?
Brad Johnson
12:15
Technically, yes. But the real question is if he can hit well enough to play everyday for the Padres, and I would bet against that.
12:16
He'll probably be an everyday guy for an extended span at some point - just to cover for injuries. Unless he's the injured guy!

12:16
Darin Ruf is owned in less than 5% of ESPN leagues. Should he be owned more?
Brad Johnson
12:16
Oh yea. Must-own in 12-team mixed 5 OFer and deeper.
12:17
I wrote him up twice over the weekend. Top-30 barreled contact rates, good discipline, good contact rate hidden by his selectivity, plus EVs
Skews GBs so the power's more in the 25-30 range per 650 PA. Should play nearly every day.
12:18
I should really put out more trade offers for him...

12:18
I have Frankie Montas do I keep?
Brad Johnson
12:18
I would try to sell, and it has nothing to do with his first outing.
btw, he pitched well, the Phillies just hit... weller...
12:19
The problem with Montas is his reliance on a splitter he's lost on and off over recent seasons.
We know they're talking about implementing the pre-tack baseball mid-season and splitter specialists will be the big losers. Besides knuckleballers, they throw the most difficult grip pitch.

Seeing as I can pickup Kyle Wright for basically nothing, should I?  The world series and his start this week looked awfully good.
