Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

We'll get started in a few moments.
12:05
Thanks for joining us. As always, I get a lot of questions in these site-wide chats. Let's keep the focus to fantasy baseball and try not to monopolize the queue - I don't really look at who's posting.
12:06
My record of answering all questions in the Front Office subscriber chats still stands. So consider subscribing if I don't get to yours today!
12:07
And one last warmup note: OOTP 23 dropped last Friday. I'm going to call that "fantasy" if you have any related questions.

I need space for a SS. Which outfielder has to go: Dylan Carlson, mark Canha? You could also choose Justin Turner 3b if you want.
Brad Johnson
12:08
Hello Hands. I'd go for Canha. He's a solid contributor across the board but lacks standout categories. I still think Carlson's going to have a huge year despite a slow start. And you can cut Turner when he's injured.

I swapped Torkelson for Julio Rodriguez straight up last week. Did I do well or will I regret that trade?
Brad Johnson
12:08
For redraft, I think you will be sad. For any kind of keeper scenario, you should be quite happy.

do you think Steven Kwan can keep this up the whole year?
Brad Johnson
12:09
He already isn't! And he might be hurt.
So, the thing about Kwan is that the Michael Brantley comp that's circulating might be very apt.
We all remember Brantley being good a long time because, well, he has been.
12:10
But, first, he was really mediocre for five years. It can take time for these contact quantity > contact quality types to find the right middle ground.
12:11
Now, I do think Brantley would have figured things out a LOT faster in today's game. Hitter development was like playing blindfolded darts back in Brantley's youth. Now, the blindfolds are off and the dart throwers have cybernetic eyes.
Or some such metaphor.
12:12
Point is, Kwan is no lock to spray 200 hits.

Franmil reyes or nelson cruz? Both are available
Brad Johnson
12:12
I'd go for Cruz personally.
Not a lot of difference between their projections.
Mitch Keller
12:12
You buying in on Eugenio’s resurgence? K’s down a bit early on and walks back up to 14%. xwOBA over .400. Small sample size or is he back?
Brad Johnson
12:13
I was all in on Suarez preseason - in part because he was so cheap, in part because he still mashes 30-40 HR even when slumping, and in part because he finished the last few months of 2021 as exactly normal Eugenio Suarez.
So yea, I think he's fine. Low AVG, high HR, good run production.

Who ends up leading the Red Sox and Mariners in saves?
Brad Johnson
12:14
I'm such a Andres Munoz fan. I just can't imagine how it's not him, at least in the classic case of using the best reliever for most save opps.
12:15
As for the Sox, I have no idea. Whitlock is verging on joining the rotation at this point. I'd have said it would be him if his start on Saturday wasn't so effective.
I'm going to guess it's someone they pick up in July in a trade.
12:16
Matt Strahm seems like their best reliever at the moment.
And, much as I like him, he's not really a closer.
Tanner Houck could be a cool darkhorse.
He's such a random number generator as a SP.

Shane McClanahan is a top ___ SP?
Brad Johnson
12:17
Without actually going through the names, probably around #10

12:17
Xavier edwards or Campusano LR in a points dynasty league
Brad Johnson
12:17
This is a tricky question!
12:19
I lean Campusano for a few reasons. He's at the tougher position to find above average hitters. I also have some fantasy quibbles about Edwards.
He doesn't really hit for power. Remember, in the words of Blake Snell, he's some slapdick prospect.
12:20
So the use case turns into - can he be a utility version of Myles Straw? And beyond that, do the Rays play that profile on a daily basis?
Vidal Brujan is a better-rounded version of the profile so how they handle him should be instructive.
Stanley, Lord of Cupington
12:21
Jesse winker. What do you do if you drafted him?
Brad Johnson
12:21
You have to hold. He's working counts brilliantly. It's going to come together.
