Fantasy Baseball Chat With Brad Johnson

Welcome everyone, we'll get started in a few moments.

How's Alek Thomas's value looking?
Oddball Herrera
12:04
Not to go too overboard, but on a scale from Mike Trout to Mike Trout where would you rate Corbin Carroll
Brad Johnson
12:04
We can start with a little AZ OF chat.
12:06
Both of these guys are really exciting. I was trying to say that more descriptively, but it's almost not worth the effort. Thomas has that 4-win OFer vibe while Carroll could be a borderline generational talent.
12:07
You can never really count on instant gratification from any prospect. Plenty of eventually very good players start off pretty tame. Thomas risks falling into that category, but the profile reads as pretty high floor, high ceiling out of the gate.
I would have said the same about Bryce Stott (still do). Thomas is a better hitter than Stott. He has more ability in all 5 of the main fantasy categories.
12:08
The Trout comp for Carroll isn't entirely ludicrous, but the raw power just isn't the same.

Trade offer I got today: I'm giving up Alonso & Arozarena for F. Peralta, K. Marte, R. Hoskins. I should say yes, shouldn't I? (10-team 5x5 H2H)
Brad Johnson
12:09
That's a yes for me, but it's not a slam dunk must-accept move.
And I happen to be very unconcerned about Marte and Hoskins. Other analysts think something's wrong.
So it's worth checking for other opinions.

Is it time to panic on Seiya Suzuki? He hasn't done much the past 2 weeks
Brad Johnson
12:10
Nah, don't stress about 2 weeks. Possibly, the league has made some adjustments. He's the kind of player who will counteradjust. Buy "low" if you can.

What do I do with my 3rd round selection in Whit Merrifield? I don’t want to drop, but I also don’t want to play… help!
Brad Johnson
12:11
This is a painful one. My advice is to keep using him. Nothing's different, he just has a .157 BABIP. It'll be fine.
But, I also can't quite avoid saying I told ya so. Not that you specifically asked for my advice re: Merrifield in the preseason.
12:12
In general, "don't pick speed-only players in the early rounds" is a sound practice. I only considered Starling Marte or Merrifield after selecting Vladimir Guerrero.
George Kirby
12:12
Given his debut and stellar command, what's a realistic fantasy expectation for him this season?
Brad Johnson
12:13
How about the timing on last week's Big Hype Prospects? Dropped a little note about Kirby (though I pulled my punch with the last sentence).
I haven't analyzed the start yet so I can only comment on the stats.
12:14
His velocity declined steadily through the outing - Rob Silver noticed that. He remained effective nonetheless, and it could just be a first-outing jitters thing.
Lots of pitchers come out throwing gas in their debut then settle down in subsequent outings.

Looking for a little help in the infield in a shallow league, was considering Taylor Walls or Kevin Smith. Who’s better this year? Long term? Thanks!
Brad Johnson
12:15
Smith has a fuller fantasy profile - he can hit for power and swipe some bags, hopefully without killing AVG.
Walls is purely an OBP-league play
Kind of a new OBP-centric Wendle

12:15
Carroll or O'Niel Cruz as the better long term play?
Brad Johnson
12:16
I have no doubt Carroll is the better play.
That's not to say Cruz can't have the better career, only that the math as of today is very clearly pointing to Carroll.
Yeperz - Gorman
12:16
Juan Yepez - will he remain with the Cards the entire season? What about Gorman, when will he be called up? Who will be benched for those 2?
Brad Johnson
12:17
These aren't really the sorts of questions I can answer. While I have some contacts with certain orgs (not the Cards), they wouldn't answer these sorts of questions either.
I will say Yepez should remain in the lineup as long as he's hitting
12:18
Gorman's path is a little tougher because Edman's breaking out and Arenado is Arenado. Folks want to see Edman to SS and Gorman to 2B, but Edman's really defensively stretched at short.
It's worth noting Gorman also has a serious swing-and-miss issue. He's not banging down the door even though you'd think he would be with 12 HR in 111 PA.
12:19
34.2% K% and 14.9% SwStr
It's a profile that's a little more prone to reacting poorly to Major League pitching.

You like any Orioles that are available in most leagues? Mateo? Zimmermann? Jorge Lopez?
Brad Johnson
12:20
Lopez is perfectly fine for chasing infrequent saves
The problem the O's had last year was they produced too few saves to bother with having a closer. I think they'll try to use Lopez as a regular closer if only to improve his trade value.
