Fantasy Baseball Chat with Brad Johnson: 6/20/22
powered byJotCast
Brad Johnson
12:15
Hey folks, we'll get started once I fill up my cup of water. What's on your mind?
Scott
12:17
How do you see Cruz doing ROY?
Cleveland baseball fan
12:17
I have to make a decision between these two, who do I keep: Ezequiel Duran or Oneil Cruz?
Brad Johnson
12:17
Oneil Cruz is going to be a big topic this week, so let's start with him.
12:18
The best case scenario looks something like early-career Aaron Judge. Cruz has that same combination of low-angle exit velocity and laser-fire exit velocity. That said, let's not get too carried away predicting immediate superstardom.
12:20
His Triple-A stats don't look like much, but he's hitting .280/.374/.520 over his last 147 PA. He's surprisingly hard to strike out for a guy of his size and power.
12:21
I'd anticipate something like a 20 HR, 20 SB pace per 600 PA. AVG/OBP around fantasy average for a 12-team mixed league. R/RBI depending on role.

12:21
Trevor Rogers looks like he's shifted where he starts on the rubber, might that fix him? Also reshaping his slider the last few games
Brad Johnson
12:22
It would take me a little too long to do that analysis for this chat. Previously, his issue seemed to have a lot more to do with his pitches having distinct release points than anything to do with where he starts or slider shape.
I haven't checked anytime recently though.
12:23
So... I'd still be cluing on his release point if trying to catch the perfect buy-low moment.

Who’s available on the wire to replace machado?
I just lost betts and machado. Help! Who should I pick up?
Brad Johnson
12:24
Tough break. I'd need to know a little more about your league to help. How many teams, depth of rosters, any scoring quirks.
12:26
I'll throw out Luke Voit (CI), Alek Thomas (OF), or Jake Burger (3B) as some guys who are often available in 12-team mixed.
12 team Dynasty
12:26
Should I hold onto Straw or pick up Berti?
Brad Johnson
12:27
It's fine to play the hot hand. This is a player type best used as a guy off the fantasy bench. Straw may have pedigree over Berti, but he's been completely miserable.
Impact
12:27
Today is the day pitching staffs have to be cut to 13 (still too many, IMO.)  A lot of players should be going up and down.  What pitcher who is likely to go down whould teams hold onto, and what player likely to be called up should someone pick up?
Brad Johnson
12:28
This is a great question, and something I wanted to make sure got highlighted in today's chat. That said, I'd have to do too much research to fully answer it. Most of the dropped players will be trivial relievers.
12:29
and most of the incoming bats will be utility guys, third catchers, or runners/def replacements.

12:29
Worth a spot in a 14 team league? 20 team league?
Brad Johnson
12:31
I don't think so. Especially with no keeper elements. We see a guy go nuts on the homer front every year. There might be positive outcomes in his future, but probably not straight from Double-A in his age 23 season.
12:32
He has a Quad-A profile not entirely unlike Patrick Wisdom, Adolis Garcia, and Adam Duvall. Of course, there are dozens of these types who never reach the Majors.
Saves
12:32
Better saves option: T. Houck or J. Duran
Brad Johnson
12:32
I'll say this - Duran is the better reliever. Houck is perhaps the better bet for ROS saves. At least as of today.
12:33
Boston figures to be hunting reliever reinforcements and might not want Houck to go the way of Papelbon (SP-caliber guy who was too good in the pen to move)
Backup closers
12:34
Who should I be targeting to help my team in the 2nd half this year and future years specifically for saves?
Brad Johnson
12:34
A.J. Puk is near the top of my list for this. Jonathan Hernandez. Daniel Hudson for this year specifically.
Voomo
12:34
Is Kimbrel in danger of ceding the job to Hudson?
Brad Johnson
12:34
Somewhat. Probably not completely.
12:35
What we might see the Dodgers do is adjust Kimbrel's usage to be more predictable. They did that with Kenley when he was struggling rather than demote him.
Which will open more saves for Hudson in the process.
Voomo
12:35
Will the Rays continue the Closer committee when Feyereisen gets back, or will he get the nod?
Brad Johnson
12:36
Committee, though Feyereisen probably gets a third of the opps or so.
It's always a committee with them.
They could have Josh Hader, and they'd be using a committee.
Actually, if they had Josh Hader, he'd be starting.
Stolen bases
12:37
Any hiding in the minors about to be called up?
Brad Johnson
12:37
Let's have a quick peek
12:38
Most of the Triple-A SB leaderboard is Quad-A types. The sort who could show up but have enough contact issues to make a return unlikely.
