I prefer deGrom by a hair. If not for his lack of wins, there'd be a much bigger consensus for him as the top pitcher. I'm hoping with the additional bullpen pieces and better offense that it won't be quite a problem this year

If healthy, do you see Kluber returning to anything close to his prior stats?
Dan Harris
3:37
Probably not his prior stats, but I don't think he needs to in order to justify rostering and contributing. Remember, he was one of the best pitchers in fantasy for a few years. But we did start seeing some issues with him even before his injury, like a slight drop in velocity, which raised some red flags even heading into 2019. So, I think the Kluber of old is gone, but I think there's a better than average chance that he can get back to being fantasy viable this year, for sure.

13 team, 5x5 roto. 9th pick. Looking to get Cole first. Machado or Harper with next pick? Thanks.
Dan Harris
3:39
Yeah, Cole at that spot would be great. I have Harper a few spots ahead of Machado, personally. There's just SUCH a strong baseline with Harper at this point in Philadelphia, and the quiet 15 steals he throws in are just gravy. There's a lot of variance with Machado's numbers over the last few years, and although he's still a second-rounder, you can always go with Rendon or Bregman a round later, and they aren't all that dissimilar.

In a categories league with a 10 innings minimum per week is the marmol draft strategy the way to go?
Dan Harris
3:41
There are very few places where I would consider Marmol, but in a categories league with that low a minimum, yeah, I think you can. I've never done it, personally. I'm very traditional when it comes to drafts. But in a categories league like that, I'm fine with it!

Are there any pitch mix storylines worth monitoring right now? Guys either adding pitches, or improving on existing ones?
Dan Harris
3:43
Always a fun endeavor! Yeah, I'll be writing an article on it later this month. Certainly, Marcus Stroman is someone I'm watching closely, and he looked dynamic today. He's adding a split change. I'm interested in Glasnow's and McCuller's cutters, too, as I think another pitch could greatly enhance their arsenal and performance.

Can't find much online about the Dodgers plans for Gavin Lux.  Other GMs in my league think the signing of Justin Turner is a death sentence for Lux's playing time.  I'm not so sure.  What is a reasonable expectation for Lux this year?  500ABs?  200?
Dan Harris
3:46
I mean, there's just no way to predict what the Dodgers are going to do. But, realistically, I don't think they want Chris Taylor to be their everyday second baseman, right? He's much better as a super-utility player, especially given how much rest they want to get Turner and others. A lot of it will be on his performance but I'd hope for 400-450 plate appearances and value him accordingly. Anything more is gravy

You mentioned 2B as a shallow position and noted it is critical to have a high-end starting pitcher. Are there other positions which would be considered shallow or otherwise critical for the upcoming season?
Dan Harris

Position scarcity is largely baked into rankings (as I detailed here: https://www.fantasypros.com/2021/02/position-scarcity-strategy-2021-fa...), so there's nothing you really need to focus on. I will say that in deeper leagues, OF dries up a little faster than expected, and certainly, there are perhaps a dozen reliable closers in the game. So, if you want a startable RP, keep your eyes open.

How does your approach to single-league drafts vary from that of your mixed-league drafts?
Dan Harris
3:49
I don't do a TON of single-league drafts these days, but the obvious shift in focus comes from position scarcity. As I mentioned in my last answer, it's barely a thing in mixed leagues, but it's a HUGE part of single-league formats. You need to pay close attention to the talent pool at the various positions in single leagues, and have your tiers set prior to drafting.

Targets/Fades relative to typical 5x5 rankings for a 4x4 "sabr roto" league? (HR R OBP SLG for hitters and ERA WHIP K HR/9 for pitchers)
Dan Harris
3:52
Great format! For pitchers, Hyun-Jin Ryu certainly gets a bump, since we saw that his skill at limiting home runs translated even when he got to Toronto. Zack Greinke, too, who is a player I'm generally avoiding in leagues, gets a bump with HR/9 taken into account. For hitters, I give a guy like Bregman a bit of a boost, and I'd be more willing to buy back into Kris Bryant.
Thanks for all the great questions, everyone! Dad duty calls a couple of minutes early, but we'll do this again soon!
