Hey folks … getting close! Spring training games becoming a bit more meaningful, roster cuts a-happening — and of course fantasy draft season in full swing. Queue is full, but quick reminder when posting questions that some brief context is helpful – league size, pool, this year/future, etc. And, the more specific, the better! Will get to as many of these as I can. Onward!

Brent, welcome back! I hope that you’ve managed okay over the offseason. Always appreciate your chats.

I’m interested in your thoughts on Vidal Brujan. Looking into your crystal ball, how much does he play this year? What’s his ceiling?

Thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:02
Think he could be a mid-season call-up with significant fantasy potential ... one caveat is that Wander Franco is in the same org; also an IFer. Make me wonder if Brujan doesn't get some more OF reps at ALT site/minors as a result. Maybe 200 AB?

Happy Monday, Brent!

How silly am I for getting excited about Taylor Trammell’s Spring thus far? Power, speed, and a penchant for walks/opposite field hits? Hmm ...
Brent Hershey
12:04
Not silly; as TT seems like a real contender for a starting OF spot. Remaking his prospect status this March. Always wary of spring results some; will be good to see how he continues to do against stronger competition in late March. But a guy who's fallen off the radar a bit for sure but has athleticism to compete.

Howdy, Brent! Have you caught Garrett Mitchell’s last week? Holy smokes, the kid seems destined for a Top 10 ranking by the end of the season. Is he a must-own for you in dynasty formats at this point?

Appreciate your feedback. :-)
Brent Hershey
12:08
Some questions about Mitchell's long-term viability at MLB draft time in 2020; certainly has answered those so far. Like with Trammell, it's still early spring. Top 10 in 2021 prob a bit optimistic, but the fact that he's still in camp and thriving is significant. Want to see him do it against high-minors pitching. But the type of guy that yes, is a good dynasty fit.

Am I going to figure out how to make contact against higher level pitching?
Brent Hershey
12:12
Always going to be swing/miss here; key will be making ENOUGH contact to let other skills play. Think Adell is getting underdrafted some due to 2020; still a small sample and easy to forget just how high he was on 2020 lists. Worth monitoring, as there are plenty of power/speed prospects who could never make enough contact, but not ready to put Adell there just yet.

Now that Yoelkis Cespedes and Pedro Leon have signed, where would you place them in the top 100 prospect lists and how soon could we see them in the bigs?  Thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:14
Don't feel that Cespedes is a Top 100 candidate at this point. Leon  could gain some consideration in the 75-100 range — but so difficult to rank these guys w/ such limited recent live looks and no AB against pro pitching yet. Leon could make his way up late season or early 2021; Cespedes perhaps year or so later if everything falls right.

I know without a crystal ball its just a guess - but what players are the most likely to get traded in season?
Brent Hershey
12:16
Closers on rebuilding teams. Colorado vets (J Gray or Marquez would be especially interesting elsewhere). A couple of small-market players a year-plus away from free agency. Second-level SD prospects for more pitching.

Has anyone done any research about punting BA in a 5x5 one league only league? BA seems to vary greatly anyways and if you buy a bunch of low average 20-30 homer types it seems you can get some cheap bang in the HR and RBIs standings.
Brent Hershey
12:21
Way back I believe BHQ had a piece on this; might be apt to a revisit giving the K-heavy ways of the modern game. Tricky part is that it's sometimes difficult to separate out BA from guys who give you either power or speed production. It's more viable in mono-leagues like your own. I believe Steve Gardner (USA TODAY) tried this in one of his LABR expert leagues this year; so keep an eye out this week as I think he was planning to write about it, too.

12:23
The Ohtani hype continues as he is throwing at 99-100 and the splitter is filthy but, beyond strikeouts the results are underwhelming.  What can we expect from him.  Is 4.00, 1.35 and 12k/9 over 80 innings a good estimate?  I know BBHQ forecast is more bullish than that right now but it was written before Spring Training started.
Brent Hershey
12:23
Yeah, that's probably fair. I've said this before ... I'm kinda off Ohtani until he's done being a two-way guy. Just not sure that it's a viable fantasy play when he's splitting time. Super fun in the real game; less so for ours IMO.

My man, Brent!

I'm in the process of my rebuild in a perpetual keeper league (H2H; AVG/OBP/SLG/R/RBI/SB) and was offered Triston Casas/Garrett Mitchell/Traylor Trammell for Austin Martin. I have some SS options already (Downs, Luciano). Take it and run?

Thanks in advance!
Brent Hershey
12:26
I'd take that; yes; especially in a rebuild. A Martin fan, but position and game power a bit in question still. This gives you more bullets.

12:30
Brent, I’m a big fan of Triston Casas for our fantasy team, but my partner is awe-struck by Austin Martin and his superior ranking on some prospects lists. Considering the nature of the 1B position in fantasy and the power/OBP potential of this Red Sox, doesn’t Casas provide a higher ceiling? Martin doesn’t seem to have an elite “attribute”.
Brent Hershey
12:30
More Casas/Martin ... Straight-up this is tougher. I'm usually drawn to the up-the-middle player, which Martin has a chance to be (Casas doesn't). But if you're looking purely in terms of a standout skill, Casas' current power wins. But Martin also strikes me as a sound foundational hitter who's power could also develop over time (say, in the same way that Ke'Bryan Hayes' has, at least in the short term). But that doesn't always come to pass, either (see Victor Robles at least in the sort term). I'd probably slightly lean Casas, but it's really close.

10 team dynasty H2H roto categories...which side do you like better- Austin Martin/M. Gore or Jose Ramirez?
Brent Hershey
12:31
More Martin! But give me the known Top-10 hitter in JRam, pretty easily.

Hi Brent. I am playing in an NFBC best ball league for the first time. I have the first pick and plan on taking Fernando Tatis. What are some things to keep in mind in this format? My home leagues are 10-team roto.
Brent Hershey
12:36
Steals don't matter; overall points do; no matter where you get them from. Some like to just go heavy on hitting, others go heavy on pitching. Some go heavy on relievers over starters (though the number of open CL situations this year makes that less viable). One thing I try to keep in mind is that esp in the late-middle rounds and on, I'm more apt to pick out inconsistent players -- for instance, skilled young starters who may not pitch a reg starter's workload. You may get their couple strong weeks where they score for you; and with enough depth, their blow-outs won't hurt. It's a fun format, I've found.

Nathan Eovaldi has been a Bloom Boards Darling and hit 100 mph multiple times yesterday. Thoughts on him as a late pick in a 10-team 5x5 roto?
Brent Hershey
12:37
Sounds about right in that format. Have rostered Eovaldi in several places so far.
Hank

I play in a keep 10 rotisserie league and usually try to find a third pitcher worth keeping in the draft. This year, I have Gerrit Cole and Shane Bieber. How would you rank the following seemingly risky SPs for a keeper league? Julio Urias, Sixto Sanchez and Jesus Luzardo.
Brent Hershey
12:39
Tough. Can't believe I'm putting Sixto third, but Luzardo/Urias/Sixto.

12:40
Yesterday, AJ Hinch kept mentioning Willi Castro as an option as the three-hole hitter for the Tigers. How would such a move impact his fantasy value for 2021, as a cheap backup option (I have Trea Turner in both of my keep forever keeper leagues).
Brent Hershey
12:40
Def helps it some -- but that lineup overall will likely struggle, so maybe not as much as other teams. Still, I'm intrigued a bit by Castro.

12:45
We're approaching draft day for many leagues. At this point in your drafts, which players are you getting the most from picks 100-200?
Brent Hershey
12:45
Believe I have Corbin, Karinchack, Luzardo, Musgrove; JD Martinez, Soler rostered in multiple places from that area.
Saul
12:50
Which players popular in the fantasy baseball community have you been avoiding for 2021?
Brent Hershey
12:50
Questions about how high guys like Plesac, Snell, Vlad Jr and Grisham, Luis Robert are going. Mainly b/c of lack of track record.
Also further down -- don't quite understand the love for Chris Bassit.

NL only, last keeper, who has more value?  Neris, Robles or Varsho
Brent Hershey
12:51
I know it's a dwindling club, but I still have hope for Robles.
Mark
12:54
Always appreciate these fire side chats.  I'm in a NL only Scoresheet league...and I want to handcuff my C position with either of the backups in Atlanta or Arizona...do you have any insight or opinions as to who will get those respective backup jobs?
Brent Hershey
12:54
Scoresheet shout-out! (Also, fire-side, too!) ARI: as much as I like Varsho (and I've rostered him in several places), could well be they send him back for more seasoning (so, Vogt). ATL: Alex Jackson over Contreras for now.
Charles

Tanner Rainey has been one of my holds targets for my Sv+Hd leagues. Is it worth fading him in my shallow league now that he has yet to make his Spring Training debut?
