Good Monday, chatters! Great to be back; thanks for filling the queue. Two quick things: Great stuff here at BaseballHQ to help prep for the season. Visit our subscription page to get in on the action. And second, our First Pitch Online conference will take place the weekend of March 6-8. Signup link is on the way, more details to come this week!

That out of the way, let's get to some chatter!

Brent - as always- these chats are a lifesaver!
NL 10 team 5x5
Is Blaine Crim a worthwhile stash at $1?
What is the outlook for Griffin Conine, H Hernandez in Miami
And what does the PT situation look like for Alex Thomas? (I have him at $2 but that's what I predict he'll fetch at auction.)

2 more - Is Braxton Ashcraft a $10 keeper? I like him but...
And finally, the most important question - is Lord of the Rings the best movie series of all time?
Brent Hershey
12:04
Crim - I doubt it. Older prospect; new regime in COL.
Like both Conine and HH some .. probably lean bit towards Hernandez, but hard to really tell what that OF will look like on Opening Day
Thomas - PT should be locked in more w/ Carroll's injury, but we've waited awhile for some sort of step forward. Agree, I'd prob toss back at $2
Ashcraft - like him a ton, but $10 seems steep. If I knew he had a rotation spot (depending when your cut date is); that would be tempting.
And sorry, have no opinion on Lord of the Rings :-(

Hi Brent.

5x5 mixed rotisserie. Pseudo keeper league where we can keep 1 player $10 or under (for this year only) and 1 player +$5 from last year salary that could be kept for additional years.

From last year I have:
Max Fried 12
Joe Ryan 5
Bryan Woo 10
Drew Rasmussen 1
Bubba Chandler 1

Woo will be kept one way or another, but leaning towards Woo as +$5 ($15) and Ryan ($5) for this year only. Only other thought was to keep Woo at $10 for this year and making Chandler the +5 ($6) guy in case he develops into $20+ guy who I could keep for several years. Any thoughts are appreciated.
Brent Hershey
12:08
Fun rules. Yeah, I'd probably take that first you have listed. Hate to give up Chandler, but he's just not proven anything yet. Woo and Ryan have (as has Fried, but the other two are better options)

12 team AL 5x5.  I want to draft a pitcher with my 1st and/or 2nd minor league picks.  I'm certain a few W Sac pitchers will be available.  I'm concerned with the pitching environment for Jaime Arnold or Gage Jump.  Am I right to be concerned, or just take the best arm??
Brent Hershey
12:13
Rookie pitchers are just not good bets, but your league, sounds like these guys will be drafted. I'd NOT do both; probably a slight lean to Arnold, though Jump more likely debuts in 2026. But yes, you'll want to manage the park if possible once they get there. Both are more mid-rotation guys rather than top-line studs.

Brent--16 team. Mixed. 5x5 (OPS, instead of BA). $260 auction. We freeze 8 players from last year, 4 from the auction & 4 from FA pick ups. No inflation. I have C Carroll at $45--a good freeze in this league--if he were to play healthy the entire season. Other options: S. Suzuki ($19), B Pfaadt ($6) or G Holmes ($1). Keep C Carroll? Or, one of the options? Thanks. Peter
Brent Hershey
12:16
I'm just wary of keeping/ drafting guys who are hurt already. And CC is a very tough one; all the metrics LOVE him for 2026. But that's with a healthy hand; and the possible reduced pop once he's back. Think I'd toss him back, and go Suzuki (neither Pfaadt nor Holmes are a consideration).

Brent,
Thank you for taking our questions!!
11 team, Roto 5x5, auction, $260, NL only, Keeper, K-BB, OBP instead of BA.
1.      Keeper questions:
a.      Does Ryan O’Hearn return $10 in value this season?
b.      Does Matt Shaw return $10 in value this season?
c.      Does Ronny Mauricio return $1 in value this season?

Long time BBHQ subscriber.
Really enjoy these chats!!
Brent Hershey
12:20
Thanks for the BHQ support!
a - lean that it's not likely
b - Yes, b/c mutliple ways to get there (speed, pop, pos versatility)
c - Yes, think he gets enough time and SB to get over that hump. Would be careful, though ... is really more than a $1 bid in your open auction? IE, he might return more value than $1 but not be keeper-worthy.

15t $260 auction  4x4. Keeper league with 20% inflation. On fence about last keeper. Have $42 Machado who must fit Utility, as I have Suarez $10 and Bregman $5, in 3b as cut option. Or, cut Lile $10, with Langford $15, Soto $30, also in OF. Also have Keaschall 2b $5, and Rafaela $5 for Of or 2b, Mi slots. Pitching $10 H Brown $10, Sheehan, C.Burns, C. Schlitler all $5, Duran$15, Palencia$5, and Vest $5.
Brent Hershey
12:24
With the strength of those keepers, I wouldn't be considering a $42 Machado, esp if he's tying up a UT spot (best case, like that to be open/flexible to use during the auction).
After that, not clear if you still need a cut or not ... if you do, Vest would be my choice to chop. Lotsa value elsewhere.

Good morning Brent! Happy that you are back with these chats, they are extremely helpful. I have to decide my keepers list pretty soon. Which 3 would you choose among : busch butler Langford frelick Edwards f-alvarez rasmussen alcantara bradish trevor-megill? I already have chosen Acuna witt j-ramirez skubal on my keeper’s list. In September you leaning toward langford alcantara and bradish. Any change? Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:29
Yes to change (this is how putting together the Forecaster helps me prep, ha!)  Busch needs to be one of the three, and Alvarez has 30-HR upside if he stays healthy (big IF). I'd take those two hitters, and then keep Bradish, who I feel has a bit higher upside right now than SandyA (though going Sandy is defensible, too). Good luck!
Former league champion
12:34
Hi Brent, which seven player our league champion will probably keep for this season among : j naylor kurtz caminero e de la cruz soto rooker merrill c sanchez Iglesias hoffman boyd woodruff misiorowski c burns giolito yesavage? Thank you
Brent Hershey
12:34
I'd mix in what YOU know about how this owner plays, but if it were me, I'd keep: Caminero, Kurtz, Soto, Rooker, Elly, Sanchez and Burns. Could see swapping in Hoffman for Elly (at the cost of SB, of course). But man, those power choices. Not surprised this person was the league champ. Best wishes in snatching back the title!

12:35
Brent, that question was for a 10 team AL only up to 15 keeper league. thank you
Brent Hershey
12:35
Then maybe you keep Westburg. Baldwin/India should be easily re-draftable if needed.

Happy President's Day, Brent! Quick question on young SP this AM.

How would you rank your interest this year in Andrew Painter, Bubba Chandler, Connelly Early, Braxton Ashcraft, and Nolan McLean?

Does one guy's long-term ceiling surpass the rest?

Thank you!
Brent Hershey
12:38
Chandler and Painter's long-term ceiling is slightly higher than the rest (assuming Painter gets his pre-surgery arm slot back, as a story in the Athletic this AM detailed). Then McLean, Ashcraft, Early for this year. Of this trio, feel like McLean right now is the one most locked into a rotation spot .

Two keeper questions my friend. With top prospect Walcott now injured worth keeping in one of 3 minors slots at $2 or save the money for the auction table? He’ll be 3 bucks next season if retains minors eligibility going into next season. If I don’t keep him will leave the that minors slot open. 5x5 w obp 16 team mixed auction 8 ml keepers. How about injured Scwellenbach at 9 dollars (send year keeper 16 next season) vs $21 Adames (2nd year keeper as well).  Thanks! And Happy George Washington’s Birthday day!
Brent Hershey
12:43
Walcott - all depends on who you'd replace with. But I think with the sal structure you have, I'd hold.
Adames over Schwelly. Pitchers get hurt; it happens. Love SS's skills, but that arm/elbow stuff does not sound good.
Kent
12:44
Most likely starting pitcher to provide value at their current ADP? Logan Gilbert Hunter Brown Brian Woo? 12 team redraft league. Wins Saves/Holds ERA Whip K’s
Brent Hershey
12:44
Gilbert. Proven ratios.
Bones
12:48
Is Konnor Griffin the opening day SS for the Pirates? If yes, what would his stats for the year look like?
Brent Hershey
12:48
Gonna say no, but ... nobody really knows. If he smashes in spring, and/or signs a long-term deal before Opening Day, then it's possible (or probably if he has the contract). If that's the case, I do think he'll be up early in the season. If he's up all year, maybe ... .275/ 15 / 18?? But could surpass that; he's a special talent and could well be a round one pick in a couple years.

which catcher has a better batting year?Teel,Jensen,or Ballesteros
Brent Hershey
12:48
Teel; easy call for me.

12:49
Thanks for the chats, Brent!
In a Scoresheet NL it still makes sense to protect Schwellenbach? (Not a great alternative in L.Roupp.)
Brent Hershey
12:49
In that case, yes. Cross your fingers!

AL scoresheet 10 team keeper league... last rookie to keep: Grant Taylor or Braydon Fisher?
Brent Hershey
12:50
Taylor ... this time next year he might well be headed for a 140-IP season (if the Sox get him the. ~100 IP they have mentioned). GREAT Scoresheet/Sim play for 2026, really.

I am getting ready to prep for my leagues and just wondering how you prep for yours?  I read BF twice and mock draft in my head for my only leagues by writing top picks for each position and $ amounts, predicting budgets and prices.  And of course keep up on the news.  Any other advice for a baseline prep?
Brent Hershey
12:54
I write/edit a book for six weeks each fall :-)  But seriously, sounds like the gameplan you have is good ... a mix of player pool awareness, doing some mock or in-draft plans, reading/consuming the news AND how it affects playing time. Then the trick is balancing all that during the draft ... being flexible when 'plans' go awry. If you can keep from painting yourself into a corner, all the better. Most of all, have fun doing it!

Who is the second best hitter to get on the A's this year?  Rooker, Soderstrom, langeliers?  I already have Kurtz but am greedy to get more A's... to watch nightly.
Brent Hershey
12:55
Rooker ... think he could have a 2025 Schwarber-type season.
Bobby
12:57
Brett, does the Sánchez trade pave the way for more playing time for Zach Cole? Thanks!
