Welcome to the Felix Comic Art Chat! From time to time, I will bring on artists and collectors as co-hosts. This time, it's Cliff Chiang!
8:52
Ask anything! If you have a comment or question directed at someone besides me or Cliff, make sure you lead off with "@name" so we know who it's for.
And yes, more PAPER GIRLS original art is coming! Soon! Announcement will be made via mailing list...good luck!
9:01
And here we go!
Jason Wood

Cliff, were you particularly upset when my Penn Quakers shellacked your Yale squad 80-57 to advance to the Ivy League finals?
Cliff
9:02
Devastated. Baseball is my favorite sports!
Felix Lu
9:02
Tsk tsk...Cliff went to a REAL Ivy: Harvard. Shame on you, Jason.
Jason Wood

On a more serious note, Cliff, when you're working diligently on an ongoing series like Paper Girls, what -- if anything -- do you do artistically to work out different creative muscles? Do you sketch for fun? Work on a longer-term side project? Other mediums? Nothing?
Cliff
9:03
It is tough to multi-task, but there's always little projects, like variant covers, or proposal to mix things up.
9:04
The thing is, drawing comics is so multi-disciplinary that you can alwaus move on to a different stage of production. The longest I'm ever doing anything like "just" penciling is 2 or 3 weeks.

Hi Cliff, will you be attending SDCC this year?
Felix Lu
9:05
Please say yes, Cliff.
Cliff
9:05
Hi Nathan! Sorry, no SDCC for me this year. Maybe next?
I only attend when I can win 2 Eisners. Ha!

Cliff, If you could travel through space and time when and where would you go?

Cliff, if you could travel through space and time, when and where would you go?

San Diego Comic Con 1987, so I can buy all the Miller DKR art from Scott Free.
9:07
Oh wait, this was for Cliff...
Cliff
9:07
I'd go back to just before the Big Bang, and answer the mysteries of time and space.
Felix Lu
9:07
That's why Cliff went to Harvard and I...didn't.

Is Paper Girls nearing its final arc?  Please tell me "No!"
Cliff
9:08
For original art? I'd go back to 2000 or so when Albert Moy was selling some Born Again pages at SDCC for 900 bucks.
We have a lot of story planned, sooo... no! :)
Nathan Zee
9:08
What are your top 3 moments from Paper Girls so far?
Cliff
9:08
Last answer was for Nathan
9:12
Brian's always surprising me with wacky stuff, so my top 3 changes a lot. Currently...
1 - Mac and KJ's "moment"
2 - Giant robots!
3 - Meeting adult Erin

Cliff, one of the highlights in the last PG arc is the dialog between Mac and KJ when KJ reveals to Mac that she is gay.  You nailed the facial expressions!
Cliff

Thanks!

Hey Cliff, I'm curious, can you please indicate me how many pages you are able to draw and ink a day (or week?) And is this an ideal turnover for you, art-wise?
Cliff
9:13
The script was pretty clear, holding the camera ont heir faces made a lot of sense.
I've worked a few different ways, but it usually takes me about 6 weeks to do a book.
9:14
To break it down, it's about a week for thumbnails, a week for rough layouts, 2 weeks for pencils, 2 weeks for inks.
9:15
For a little while, I'd spend 2 weeks doing thumbnails and layouts, then I'd shoot for page a day, penciling in the AM and inking in the PM.
Problem was, it's sometime way more work intensive to pencil a page, and I'd feel rushed on the inks. So now I try to just stick to one thing at a time.

9:16
Oh yeah...that's even better. We beat Harvard in the championship game (set/spike)
Felix Lu
9:16
As someone who went to the Harvard of West Los Angeles (UCLA), home of the most NCAA D1 championships in history...I pat you on the head for your little win.
Cliff
9:17
Ha! I did have a pal who played football, but really that was the extent of my experience. Never attended the big game!

Hi Cliff! Love PAPER GIRLS! It’s been a while since I listened to your segment of the podcast, so forgive me if you’ve already answered this. Do you collect any artists that is opposite of your clean style? If so, who? Thanks!
Cliff
9:18
I would, for sure! I'd love a Zaffino, or Gipi. I have a Dino Battaglia that's really important to me and my current style fixation.

@cliff, how long does it take you to draw a page?  How long for a cover?
