Hey everyone, hope all is well!
Moved the chat up a day since tomorrow could get pretty busy with the deadline for teams and players to exchange arbitration filings
Red Sox Middle Infield

Who do you predict is playing SS, 2B, and CF on opening day?
Anthony Franco
6:02
SS: Andrus
2B: Enrique Hernández
CF: Michael Taylor
Aaron Nola

What are the odds that I get a contract extension this year? Do I give a hometown discount to the defending NL champs to stay with a winner or wait for FA and go to the highest bidder?
Anthony Franco
6:03
He's already done the early-career extension thing once. Impossible to know whether he just loves Philly enough to take another discount but he shouldn't be under much pressure financially
6:04
He'll be entering his age-31 season in 2024. I'd take him over Rodón, think there's a case for him to beat $200MM if he gets to free agency. He's so good

Giants sent season ticket holder email today. Say Villar will start at 3B and no specific mention of Desclafani or Wood.  Any rumblings about dealing those two SP or 3B JD Davis? Would return be slim, even if SF picked up some $?
Anthony Franco
6:06
Yeah I don't think they'd get enough back for any of those guys to make it worthwhile. Davis probably has the most value since he's cheapest and hit well in the second half but he also feels like the guy who's most important to the Giants as currently constructed. He's not a good third baseman but I expect he'll be involved pretty heavily at first base and DH
One year of Wood at $12.5M probably draws moderate interest but I don't think SF's rotation is deep enough they'll want to do it. Can't get anything for Disco right now after the lost year

I'll take St. Louis

Who would trade for Kepler? I think the Twin’s would be happy to have a solid reliever in return. Any names of a reliever come to mind from the Yankees?
Anthony Franco
6:07
Heyman reported they've kicked around Kepler with Miami, which makes some sense. Probably would have to be as part of a package (likely a secondary piece) in a deal for a starter
6:08
Yankees fit too, sure. If you want a specific match with a reliever, guess I could see Jonathan Loáisiga working?
6:09
He's awesome at his best but the strikeouts dropped kind of out of nowhere last year. Also has two years of control remaining. I don't think the Yankees would give him up for Kepler but if they did, I'd understand the logic well enough

6:09
Zaidi says he has no plan to sign another catcher and go with Bart and Sabol (rule 5 pick). Do you think that's sustainable given the lack of experience?
Anthony Franco
6:11
Not familiar enough with Sabol to have a great answer, I guess. It seems light to me but the Giants must love Sabol, who I've never seen play
His minor league strikeout numbers are a little worrisome but the overall track record is good, albeit as a player who was typically old for his level
What If?
6:11
What if the Mets had offered Correa their original contract if he paid the insurance premium on a policy indemnifying the team against an injury to his right lower leg? If the team never collects on the policy they reimburse him for the premiums he paid. Would that have been allowed? Would he have done it?
Anthony Franco
6:12
Ha this is creative but I'm guessing a provision requiring the player to pay an insurance premium on himself probably wouldn't get approved

When a player from Japan is posted, it seems like it would be very appealing for the MLB team and player alike to sign a one-year "prove it" deal. in particular, it would mean that only one contract year was subject to the posting fee. Also, these players seem to be in a prime position to "prove it" since the there is always mystery surrouning how their skills will translate. Why is this not commonplace?
Anthony Franco
6:13
Yeah I can see the argument for this, since those guys almost always get a contract clause that exempts them from the arbitration system
6:14
It probably should happen more often but I'd guess it's just risk aversion on the player's part. Not too dissimilar from a typical free agent -- multiple years means greater long-term financial security
6:15
If Masataka Yoshida is as good as the Red Sox think he is, he'd have been much better signing for one year than 5/90. If he plays at a Shogo Akiyama level, he'd probably not get another MLB job after one year. It's a risk-reward calculus for those guys

Can the Reds contend in 2024? The big three rookie hurlers will be more seasoned and Elly de la Cruz, Noelvi Marte, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, and others, should be ready to contribute
Anthony Franco
6:15
I think it's optimistic but not entirely implausible. Going to need a bunch of the young infielders to hit the ground running
6:16
I'd feel better about it if one of Barrero or Steer locked himself in as a long-term regular this year
Rank the likelihood of being trading during 2023
6:16
Grichuk, Myers, Soler
Anthony Franco
6:16
Myers, Grichuk, Soler
6:17
Soler's tough because he has another opt-out after the season. It's all downside for the team. If he's playing well at the deadline, acquiring team can't bank on him being around for 2024. If his production tanks, which it does all the time, you're stuck with a strikeout-heavy player who's best suited as a DH

When will the tigers be able to contend again?
Anthony Franco
6:18
Another team that feels like it's looking at '24-25. This year's going to be rough, but there's some interesting upper level position player talent and a full season of health from the starters they were building around could get them back in the division mix by 2024

Edward Cabrera from Miami for Kepler, Bailey Ober, and Austin Martin from the Twins. Is this enough or would you have to throw in another upper level prospect from the Twins? Maybe Louie Varland?
Anthony Franco
6:19
Yeah, it's a little too quantity over quality. Even with Varland, don't think it has the headliner potential building block hitter Miami would want for Cabrera
6:20
I still think there's like a 10% chance Austin Martin can be that guy but it's a tough sell after he hit two homers in 90 games at Double-A. Thought there'd be more power when he was at Vandy
Trader Joe
6:20
Do you think it would make sense for the White Sox to try to trade for Tony Kemp?  What would the A's want for him?
Anthony Franco
6:21
Oakland would probably give him away for a rookie ball upside play their scouts kind of like. Kemp's not really a high-value trade asset
6:22
I'm not sure he's better than the White Sox's internal second base options but the left-handed bat kind of balances things out at least. It makes some sense but doesn't move the needle for me one way or another
Brewers

Aaron Ashby will be MLB’s biggest breakout player in 2023
