Hey everybody, hope you all enjoyed your week!
4:00
Guess we should start with the big news from today huh?

Thoughts on the twins-marlins trade? I think I'd rather be the marlins since they have the depth to handle the loss of Lopez, while Arraez will leave a big hole in the twins lineup.
Twins
4:00
Twins got absolutely fleeced, right? Odd trade for a team that just signed Correa
Anthony Franco
4:01
I slightly prefer it for Minnesota, certainly don't think they got fleeced. Pablo's really good and they can backfill at first base with a Voit type in free agency, since they should still have plenty of payroll flexibility
4:03
A lot of the response I've seen has been that Miami lost badly here actually, which I also don't really see. They had to do something to address the offense but clearly were hamstrung again from a payroll perspective. I think you could argue for them to have taken more of a quantity-based approach that netted them multiple prospects, but it doesn't seem like they're interested in kicking things down the road any further
4:04
So I get it for both teams, even if I think Minnesota probably came out slightly ahead

Will my team even hit 100 homer runs this year and who is playing shortstop? Jazz was not good there last year and is coming off an injury. Does that make Andrus a fit?
Red Sox Middle Infield

Does this trade mean it’s more likely Marlins trade an infielder. I know Chizzholm isn’t happening, but Wendle? Berti?
Anthony Franco
4:05
I'd guess they probably give Jazz another shot at this point. The Rojas deal looks kind of weird in retrospect if they knew this was a possibility. Don't think you want to relegate Arraez strictly to first base or DH though
Could see Wendle getting moved, sure. I think Miami likes Berti enough they'll hold onto him since he'd have pretty modest trade value

Hey Anthony, Are the Angels really going to start the season with Fletcher and Rengifo at SS? They made some good trades this offseason but they shouldn’t trust those two to handle the premium position in the infield. Any possibility they could trade for one of the Reds’ young SS and what would it cost?
Anthony Franco
4:06
Urshela can factor in there a little bit too. I think they're probably done with the infield for now, yeah
4:07
The Reds aren't going to trade away De La Cruz and Marte and Arroyo would be longshot trade candidates at best. Maybe there's some kind of challenge trade involving Jo Adell and José Barrero that can be worked out, but it's not like Barrero would solve the Angels' shortstop question. He very well might just be worse than the guys they already have
Wild Card
4:08
This is the first regular offseason since the expansion to12-team playoffs.  What impact do you think this has had, especially in the trade market? My impression is that there are fewer sellers now because more teams feel they have a shot at a Wild Card so they are less interested in trading away current contributors.
Anthony Franco
4:09
Yeah I'd agree with this. I think we were kind of trending this way to begin with but teams like Arizona, Miami and Baltimore that might've been on the fringe of selling with a 10-team playoff can really talk themselves off that ledge now

If the Red Sox were a divisional last place team last year, what are they now?   Good grief!
Anthony Franco
4:10
Possible Baltimore takes a step back if their bullpen regresses and some of the depth starter types (Wells, Voth, etc.) fall off a little bit. Could see Boston getting into fourth
4:11
Hard for me to see a path to the top three in that division unless one of those other teams is decimated by injuries, which obviously happens to a few teams every year

Are two teams from the AL Central making the playoffs? Twins and Guardians both looking pretty good
Anthony Franco
4:11
I like both those teams (and the White Sox to a lesser extent) but think the other divisions are still strong enough to get all three WC spots
Ryan
4:11
Has Seattle DFA'd Alberto Rodriguez and Justus Sheffield because a deal could be happening soon or do they just have no value?
Anthony Franco
4:12
Nah I just think they were the last two guys on the 40-man roster at this point. Rodriguez struck out a bunch in High-A. Sheffield, exciting as he was for a long time, just hasn't been good in the majors
4:13
Maybe they trade one of them for cash or something but it's not a sign they're both about to get packaged for a good player in a trade
Ryan
4:13
Anthony Santander seems like a perfect fit for Seattle. Decent power, switch hitter, can DH and play the corners. What would it take for Baltimore to give him up? Either Flexen or Marco and a 10 to 20 ranked prospect?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Seems like a reasonable starting point. Maybe more of a back of the top 10 org guy because the Seattle system is pretty thin at this point

Alex Reyes, think he gets an MLB deal or an MiLB deal with a decent $ if he makes the majors?
Anthony Franco
4:15
I think he'll get an incentive-laden big league deal with like a $2MM base
Tony

Seems like the Cards will sort things out the first half of the season and then adjust for playoff run. Some of the projections (for what they are worth) seem to like the team. My question is if you think Montgomery and less so Flaherty will agree to extensions? If not, are they expendable for the 24 rotation?
Anthony Franco
4:16
Yeah Derrick Goold has written a couple of times that they plan to talk extension with some of their starters in Spring Training. Flaherty's pretty tough to value right now but Montgomery seems doable
Agree with your general point on the roster btw. Good team with a lot of depth, well-positioned for a bigger move at the deadline to add star talent (particularly in the rotation)
Metsiac
4:16
Do you see the Mets landing Britton or Chafin as the final piece of the winter puzzle?
Anthony Franco
4:17
Think they'll get one of the remaining lefties, yeah. Guess I'll say Chafin but any of him, Britton, Smith or Moore wouldn't surprise me
Willie
4:17
Anthony, how do you expect Francisco Tatis, Jr to perform?
Anthony Franco
4:19
Ha yeah he might have the widest error bars of any player in the game this year. I'm inclined to believe he'll be mostly the player he was before, albeit after a slow start as he regains the feel for game speed
4:20
It's not unanimous, of course, but we've seen a bunch of really good players get popped for PED's (Starling Marte, Nelson Cruz jump to mind) and then return from their suspension no worse for wear
Arise, Sir Loin of Beef
4:20
Have the Mets improved their pitching staff this offseason? Not much change to the offense, not that the offense needed much, but the staff seems far better to me.
Anthony Franco
4:20
I think it's higher potential but lower-floor group than the one they had last year
4:21
Bassitt and Walker are pretty dependable mid-rotation starters. Not the most exciting pitchers in the world (particularly Walker) but fine
4:22
Senga's the real wild card there. Wouldn't be surprised if he's immediately a #2 caliber starter who's better than both those guys, also wouldn't be shocked if he's a #5 type
