Not necessarily anyone super exciting -- could just be David Peralta or whoever -- but I'd be really surprised if they do nothing there
Thank you for the chat!

Would you extend Gleyber? If so, what do you think it would take? May not be a perennially all-star but is definitely a solid contributor.
Anthony Franco
4:47
Not really a guy I'd be anxious to extend when he's still two years out personally. Good player as you mentioned but not a star, arbitration salaries are already getting relatively close to his free agent market value
4:50
As for potential terms? You're probably factoring in about $24MM for his final two arb years. Second basemen don't usually get paid all that well in free agency. Wong/Segura both got two years for a little less than $20MM recently. Gleyber's younger but also not yet a free agent
If you offered something around $44MM over four, he'd probably consider it. Don't think the Yankees would be eager to do it though

Are you surprised the Pirates let Miguel Andujar go? Or at this point he would just take playing time from others?
Anthony Franco
4:51
Not really. He's out of options and hasn't played well in forever. We're kind of in Willie Calhoun territory with him

Angels have a top 10 rotation in terms of ERA, and easily a top 10 lineup if healthy. If we add to the Arm Barn, then surely we are a wildcard team right?
Anthony Franco
4:52
Definitely within the realm of possibility but "surely" a Wild Card team is a bit much. The caveat that it's a top ten lineup if healthy is doing a lot of hefty lifting on a team with Trout, Rendon and, to a lesser extent, Walsh
4:54
I like the Angels more now than I have at any point in the past five years and would have them right in the Wild Card bubble mix, but it's a team that's going to be very reliant on its few best players to stay on the field more than most

Do deffered payments lower AAV?  Please please please answer my question even if you don't know!  I feel as if I'm going to disappear into the ether because I don't exist since my question never gets answered!

Why would a team pay a player a signing bonus if it is calculated into the luxury tax calculations anyhow? What's the benefit?
Anthony Franco
4:54
I'll take these together since the recent Devers extension is illustrative for both, to some extent
4:56
To Jorge's question: yes, deferrals without interest lower the actual contract value for luxury tax purposes. So the Devers deal will pay him $313.5MM but because it's not really over ten years, the league treats it as an approximate $290MM deal (with an associate $29MM AAV hit)
This is an instance where they used the signing bonus to manipulate the tax hit as well. They signed Devers to a $17.5MM deal for his final arbitration the day before he signed the ten-year extension
4:58
The extension came with a $20MM bonus but preserved that "lesser" first-year salary at $17.5MM so they could treat it as a 2024-33 contract for tax purposes (thereby keeping the $17.5MM tax hit for next season). Devers gets his money up front still, but Boston maintains immediate CBT flexibility with the contract structure
4:59
Not every signing bonus is like that, obviously. You can't do this kind of thing with a free agent; the bonus just is counted as part of the total contract value. In those cases, I assume it's just about getting the player some money up front that their camp desires
But there are certain instances where you can manipulate it to achieve a certain tax purpose too

Adbert Alzolay looked sharp at the end of 2022.  Any chance that he is in the mix for closer?
Anthony Franco

Yeah I could see this. Certainly has the stuff for it

The biggest SURPRISE between now and Spring Training is...
Anthony Franco
5:02
I assume this is a Reds question specifically?
5:03
Don't have a great answer for them over the next month. Doubt they'll do a whole lot, maybe sign a lefty reliever

when can MLB clubs put players on 60 day injured lists? I know for fact a couple on the Cub roster won’t pitch until after all star break. They currently are sitting on the 40 man roster

How plausible is Grienke or Wacha be for the Padres?  Like to see one more starter for a six man rotation early in the season.
Anthony Franco
5:04
It fits from a roster perspective but seems like they might just be tapped out payroll wise, at least until the deadline
5:05
Roster Resource projects them about $2MM from the third tax tier that'd push back their 2024 draft pick ten spots. Could see that being an unofficial cutoff for them for now

It looks like the Orioles are going to let the farm play it out for the infield and outfield roles at this time. My guess is that Elias is looking at the trade deadline to kick it into high gear. Do you like this pathway rather than spending on a few mid-tier players this off-season?
Anthony Franco
5:06
On the position player side, sure. I would've done more to address the rotation though
5:08
Maybe they fully intended to do that and then the prices for mid-tier starting pitching jumped beyond their comfort level so they sat it out. But players like Stripling, Manaea or Thor came cheap enough I would've liked to see them jump in somewhere
Guess they still could with Wacha
Hoyer and Harris
5:08
How about a swap of Nick Madrigal for Tyler Alexander? Both are arb-eligible with salaries around $1M. Gives DET a potential everyday player as they reset and gives CHC a useful lefty as they're a step closer to contention.
Anthony Franco
5:09
Don't think the Cubs would do it

On the four lefty starters question from Bob T., you don't have to go back far to find an answer.  Last year the Dodgers had four lefty starters:  Urias, Kershaw, Anderson, and Heaney.

Hi Anthony If the Jays are wanting to be WS contenders, the forth outfielder needs to be someone who keeps up a high level of play. Seem FA's want more playing time and trade targets like Santander, Harold Ramirez, Lane Thomas, Sam Haggerty or Jake Meyers would be wishful thinking in a trade so possibly Rob Refsnyder for Biggio would be better than most... then a quick trade for AJ Puk with Leo Jimenez and Hagen Danner going back to the A's... thoughts?
Anthony Franco
5:11
Biggio for Refsnyder, sure. Doubt it happens as an intra-divisional trade but I can see the case it balances out both teams a little better
5:12
Don't think the A's are looking to deal Puk right now. Seems like they want to give him a shot to earn a rotation spot
