I doubt Montgomery would be happy doing that for a full season, especially in a walk year, and if they can offload $12-15MM on a team that'll use him as a starter, better to do that and reallocate some of the money into deadline pickups than keep him in low-leverage relief

As for trading E-Rod, they can try but he'd be a lot tougher to move with three years and $66MM left on the deal. They'd need to eat a ton of money

Are there teams besides the Twins who might want to make trades to reduce payroll over the next few weeks? If so, who might be a good target for the Nationals to consider, given that they have plenty of payroll space and might be willing to overpay salary in order to protect good prospects?

San Diego's the obvious one for that. Tougher to find a match with the Nats specifically though. This hasn't been the kind of offseason that suggests they're about to push in for Cease. Arraez would've made sense had they not landed both Lowe and Bell

You could sell me on the Nats needing Robert Suarez but I'm skeptical that the Padres will actually move him and the fact that he can opt out next offseason again makes that more of a win-now push than the rest of the Washington offseason suggests

Hey, Anthony.  Happy MLK Day and thanks for working on the holiday.  Do you know any team...not now, but in baseball history...comparable to the Dodgers in terms of depth and star power?  (and I realize the games aren't played on paper, but...they seem to be a behemoth.

I'd need more time to think about this but that era of Yankees baseball from the late-90s and early 2000s where they rotated in Clemens, Pettite, Mussina, Giambi, A-Rod, Matsui, etc. to a core that already had Jeter, Posada, Williams and Mariano feels like the closest thing
