Hey everyone, hope you're all wrapping up a good week!
Decent number of questions in here already, let's discuss
4:00
Also Jeff McNeil just agreed to a four-year, $50MM extension with the Mets according to Jeff Passan
Anyways, to the chat
Brewers
4:00
Why would the Brewers want to keep Stearns? It seems like he wants to be gone and it would be better to get something for him then lose him for nothing
Anthony Franco

If your premise is true -- and I think it's entirely possible he just wants to take a year without such a significant workload before reevaluating his opportunities -- I'd guess it's simply about establishing a precedent that execs under contract there can't force their way out early

Sometimes I see FO's criticized when players get DFA'd/waived and claimed repeatedly - but aren't these borderline 40 man candidates happy that they keep getting (re)claimed...I mean, aren't there plenty of MiLB players who'd be thrilled to be in their shoes (collecting that 40 man paycheck) even if their destinations remain in flux for weeks on end? Don't those guys get paid substantially more than their MiLB counterparts, and how much $ is that, BTW? Thanks.
Anthony Franco
4:03
They do in season but there's no paycheck for the offseason, so Lewin Díaz was probably irritated by the last couple months
4:04
But generally I agree that there's nothing really to criticize the team for. Can't speak to the player perspective on this but I'd personally hope I got claimed every time I hit waivers. Much rather have the 40-man spot than know for a fact that I'm starting the season as a non-roster player with a Triple-A club

Tiger fan here.  I know, thanks.  Any reason to watch this year?
Anthony Franco
4:05
Ha, you can always find reasons to watch if you're not as concerned about results. Progress of Greene/Torkelson are the big ones, can hope for Boyd and/or Lorenezen to bounce back and become good midseason trade chips
4:06
But yeah, the team is going to be pretty bad overall and seems fairly content with given their past mistakes. I'm in a similar position (albeit with a different sport obviously) as a Raider fan, so I understand your pain haha

So does Will!

Who do you think is the first member of the 2022 draft to reach the big leagues? Any this year?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Hmm, probably nobody I'd pick to get there this year. Maybe Cade Horton if the Cubs were hanging around and wanted to break him as a reliever in the Brandon Finnegan or Garrett Crochet mold?
4:09
Cooper Hjerpe's really advanced and could probably factor into the Cardinals rotation by 2024, although I'd be surprised if things get bad enough they need to call on him this year

What's up with Baltimore?  They give the fans what they wanted to hear, then sign virtually no one of significance and enter spring training with a ragged staff.  I'd tap into that farm system and give the kids some on the job training.  The fans deserve better than they have been fed for the last several years.
Anthony Franco

Don't disagree. I like Cole Irvin but think it's fair to be pretty disappointed with an offseason where he's the best starter they acquired

The Mets have 4 prospects in the Top 100, but Ronny Mauricio is not one of them.
Despite playing very well as the youngest in his leagues and winning the DWL MVP award, he's virtually ignored.
Anthony Franco
4:11
He's been on top prospect lists before. No one questions the physical tools, but he swings at everything and had a .296 on-base percentage in Double-A last year
4:12
I think he's properly valued as an interesting upside play who has an extreme range of outcomes from All-Star caliber to Quad-A type because of his approach

Vidal Brujan is out of options.  Does he find a role with the Rays this season or is he more likely to be traded?
Anthony Franco
4:12
I lean towards midseason trade there
4:13
Think the margins are too thin for them in the AL East to play him enough to warrant keeping him on the MLB roster with what he's shown so far, but another team that's less urgently competitive should give him everyday run

Here is the way MLB rates a certain (real) prospect: Hit: 55 | Power: 35 | Run: 55 | Arm: 50 | Field: 60 | Overall: 45. The guy is 22 and plays CF.  OK, the power is low. Still, the guy is regarded as excellent and MLB ready in CF with good bat to ball skills. So it seems like he'd have a good OBP at a skilled position. How do they come up with an overall of 45?
Anthony Franco
4:14
I can't speak for their process but a 45 feels about right for those tool grades. Without any power he's probably a fourth/fifth outfielder
4:15
If you knew a prospect would become Gilberto Celestino, what grade would you give him?
Nick Fortes
4:15
With Pablo Lopez gone, will I get more playing time over Stallings?  Stallings was the personal catcher for Alcantara, Rogers and Lopez and Fortes handled everyone else. Fortes was also the better hitter.
Anthony Franco
4:16
Probably depends on Stallings really. Fortes is a nice player, solid 1-b type catcher though I doubt he'll maintain a 15-20 HR pace over a full season
4:17
Stallings has shown the ability to be more than that, largely thanks to the elite glove. He wasn't that guy in year one with Miami but I imagine the Marlins give him another shot to try to recapture his late-Pittsburgh form

First with a Jo Adell question! Rumor circulating in DC that the Nats are talking about a trade to bring Adell to Washington. What do the Nats have that the Angels want that badly?
Adell
4:18
I keep hearing that I will be finally traded. Where do you think I might go and what will be the return
Anthony Franco
4:18
I haven't seen that Washington rumor specifically but don't think it has to be anything too special for the Angels to think it's worthwhile with how badly Adell has struggled
4:19
If they traded him in a deal for Kyle Finnegan or something, I wouldn't be surprised
Angels fan

So Artie Moreno changed his mind about selling. What is going to change. At best we will fight for a wild card. No one is catching Houston and we will say good bye to Othani
Anthony Franco
4:19
Yeah tough turn of events for Halos fans
4:20
I do think they'll be in the Wild Card mix though

two questions. Why wouldn’t we republicans both Urias and will smith. We need both and they are young. Also Can we bring up Cartaya and get creative moving other guys around to accommodate him
