Let me down a little bit! I was very optimistic on the rotation experiment

As the new Nationals  leadership fires more and more staffers and coaches the question becomes more relevant --- Could the Nats take a surprising step up next year just by the young players having better coaching? In other words, how bad has their talent been as opposed to how bad has their talent development been?
Anthony Franco
4:11
I doubt it'll be a huge difference and the changes would be of varying degrees. It's not like every player gets better by 10% if the coaching improves. The hope is that you get a tweak that, say, unlocks some consistency with Dylan Crews and makes him 75% better, but most players are probably going to stay around the same level
4:13
Definitely fair to say that they haven't gotten as much as they should've out of Crews. Wood and Abrams have flashed more but not been consistent enough. I think Luis García, Ruiz and House are unlikely to be good no matter who's coaching

Do you think that Austin Hays is a possibility for the Yankees in LF to share time with Dominguez?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Sure. He's boring but they could use a RHH outfielder for a couple million dollars
JM
4:14
What exactly are "player benefits" (in context of calculating and projecting CBT) and how are they calculated?
Anthony Franco
4:16
Similar to regular employment benefits, just at much higher prices. Pensions, health insurance, etc.
Bye Bye
4:16
Bellinger opted out. Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:17
Did he officially announce this now? That was never in doubt
He should get nine figures finally
Trader Jack

Would the Mets consider dealing Nimmo for defensive flexibility?
Anthony Franco
4:19
He's got five years and $102.5M left for ages 33-37. They'd need to eat a decent amount to move him for no return. Doesn't seem worth it when he's still a productive hitter
Bye Bye
4:20
9 figures from who?
Anthony Franco
4:22
Yankees return makes the most sense to me. Angels could do that, Texas, San Francisco, maybe Cincinnati
Hits Like Rays
4:22
From the Rays!
Anthony Franco
4:22
Wouldn't rule it out!
4:24
Bellinger's way better than Tyler O'Neill, better than Anthony Santander. I had him at 5/105 and was the lowest out of anyone at MLBTR on him. Believe everyone else was between 120-140

Pirates need to add a pre-arb bat with power and they need to shoot higher than Spencer Horwitz (good player, just can't be the best you have). Who could you see being a target, even if the trade cost is hefty?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Tyler Soderstrom
4:26
Matt Wallner's closer to the Horwitz tier than Soderstrom but he's got real juice (at least against RHP) and not someone the Twins are going to make untouchable at age 28 in a rebuild even though he's controllable for four seasons
Commie
4:26
Whither the Padres at 1b?
Anthony Franco
4:26
Goldy?
Reds sign Alonso and trade them Spencer Steer?
4:27
I'm trying here but I don't think it's going to be super exciting. Probably still better than what they got from Arraez this year though
Luc
4:27
Is Hundley the new Giants manager?
Anthony Franco
4:28
Britt Ghiroli wrote earlier this week that he's the perceived favorite
Sensible enough connection. I don't have a take on whether it'd be a good hire

Can Cade Horton be activated off the IL because he's eligible WITHOUT a current P being injured? Seems like it should be treated as just another day in the season as nobody knew when he'd be able to pitch. Exactly what is the rule? Thanks.
Anthony Franco
4:33
Not 100% sure but I don't believe you can do this. I can't remember any instance of this happening. Believe they'd need someone else to be injured for MLB to approve the mid-series change

Mitch Keller for Taylor Ward? would solve several Pirate problems in one trade. An extension would have to also be agreed to
Anthony Franco
4:34
Easy pass for me if I'm Pittsburgh. Ward's a nice player but already pretty expensive in arb and an extension is beginning at age 33
Rangers13
4:34
Should the Rangers extend Langford and/or Leiter or Carter? What would those extensions if signed look like in years and money?
Anthony Franco
4:38
Langford would beat the Andrés Giménez contract. He's in the low-mid nine figures for me. Leiter feels like he's somewhere around $60MM. Same service class as Hunter Greene and Brayan Bello were and has had a little more success than those guys did at the same time
Ethan
4:38
Is Dennis Santana the Pirates' closer next year? He seems like a regression candidate and there are plenty of experienced FA closers
Anthony Franco
4:39
Agree that he feels like a regression candidate but I'd rather see them throw all their money at offense than sign an Emilio Pagán or Ryan Helsley
4:40
Alright. I have to wrap things up here. Need to get some work done on the Diamondbacks outlook before my regular coverage shift tonight
4:41
Thanks for all the questions as always! Feel free to throw anything else at me on X @affranco10 and I'll get back to you there over the weekend
4:42
I believe Steve's Monday chat is still on for the moment, though that might get pushed back a day because Darragh is off on Monday for Canadian Thanksgiving
