Probably conditional on Verlander signing elsewhere. Doesn't make much sense to me to sign both of those guys when they'd also need to take a bigger swing on the rotation front and have a few young starters who have a shot to force their way into the picture
3:37
I'd like it more if they find a trade partner for Robbie Ray. I go into this more in their Offseason Outlook which'll go up tonight or tomorrow, but he's coming off a rough second half and due $25M for his age-34 season. Trading him might feel counterintuitive for a team that's already prioritizing starting pitching, but there are only so many spots on which they can find a significant upgrade if they also want JV back (or make a run for Scherzer)
Alex Anthopoulos
3:37
Which is more urgent to the Braves address this offseason? A competent SS or a mid level starting pitcher?
Anthony Franco
3:38
I guess #3 starter is the bigger priority but it'd just be an unsuccessful offseason if they don't come away with both of these things

I saw a report that the Red Sox only have a handful of truly untouchable players: Anthony, Crochet, and Narvaez. That last one surprised me. Is Narvaez an extension candidate?
Anthony Franco
3:39
Well I doubt they actually have Narvaez in the same tier as Roman Anthony and Garrett Crochet, but sure, I buy that they don't want to trade their 27-year-old starting catcher with five years of club control
3:41
Not sure I see the need for an extension this far out but if he's willing to take like a $20M guarantee and give them a couple cheap club options to ensure he locks in some significant earnings in his career, then by all means get it done
Unqualified Reds GM
3:41
Locked on Reds podcast fellas said today that Hunter Greene trade rumors have intensified this week. The framework for this rumored trade to be in the works is HG to Boston and Jarren Duran headed back to Cincy. As cool as this would be to have Duran there’s no way they really trade HG though right?! I personally would rather see a Lodolo & a prospect for Wilyer Abreu(which has also been rumored to be a potential framework both teams like)
Anthony Franco
3:42
I would not trade Greene for Duran and would be shocked if the Reds did that. Lodolo/Abreu framework seems more reasonable, sure
3:43
I'm lowest on Abbott of the three (good pitcher but I'm concerned about the possibility of a homer spike as a fly-ball lefty with middling velo), so he's the guy I'd want to move if I were them
3:44
But I also wouldn't take Abbott for Abreu if I were the Sox so if you need to put Lodolo in there to get talks going, alright

I say Alex Call wins the series MVP.  Not a question, just saying.
Anthony Franco
3:44
It's a bolder pick than Max Muncy, I'll give you that
Mariner Steve
3:45
As the GM of the Mariners would you feel confident with playing Young at 2B Williamson at 3B…..assuming you signed Naylor and traded for Kwan? Emerson will be a factor by July or earlier. In this scenario Ford would catch twice a week and DH once
Anthony Franco
3:46
I don't know that it matters whether you're swapping Kwan in for Randy here but if they're bringing back Naylor, yeah I can see them punting on 2B/3B for a couple months to see what happens with Emerson
3:47
I'm still holding out some hope for Bliss, who I think would've been above Young/Rivas at 2B had he not gotten hurt again on the rehab assignment
Cleveland Rocks!!’n
3:47
Who will be the starting Catcher for Cleveland on opening day?
Anthony Franco
3:47
Sure looks like they're running it back with Naylor/Hedges
Joshua
3:47
What would the Pirates have to include in order to get CJ Abrams, would Bubba Chandler have to be in play? Pirates desperately need a good, controllable bat and the Nats can push their rebuild back a bit.
Anthony Franco
3:49
I don't think Abrams has that kind of pull. Not long for shortstop and we still haven't seen him put together a full season of excellent offense
Feels more like Braxton Ashcraft than Chandler if you're mapping Abrams to Pittsburgh for a controllable starter as a headliner

Your thoughts on a college coach making the leap to MLB, am referring to the Giants' new manager, Tony Vitello. What are the changes Vitello will have to make to adjust to managing players making millions and the clubhouse culture, his (or Buster's choice) bench coach/pitching coach that is hired?
Anthony Franco
3:51
Excited to see how it goes. The job Vitello did at Tennessee, which had been an also-ran in the SEC before he got there, was incredible. Would make sense to hire a bench coach who either has MLB managerial experience or has at least been on big league coaching staffs for a few years
Parker
3:51
Red Sox sign or trade for a number 2 starter?
Anthony Franco
3:52
Either works. I'm sure they'll be in on Joe Ryan trade talks while keeping tabs on Framber/Cease in free agency. Agree that should be the big offseason priority
3:53
Need someone better than Bello as their most reliable starter behind Crochet
Don Slaught
3:53
Can Cruz still fetch a top 100 prospect in a Bucs trade?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Yeah I think that's reasonable for three years of control on a player with his tools. Back half of the top 100 type though
Wtf mate?
3:54
Derrick Goold has reported that the cardinals are getting interest in their catching depth. They have Herrera (great bat, bad defense), Pages (bad bat, good defense), Crooks (highly touted defense, maybe potential for an above average bat), and Bernal (seen as better prospect than Crooks, but still in minors). Who are potential matches? What sort of returns would each bring?
Anthony Franco
3:55
I figure they're just going to trade Pages to a team that can use him as a high-end backup like San Diego or Houston
3:57
Herrera might be their best hitter. Don't see the point of trading Bernal when they're early in a rebuild. Maybe they move Crooks if Bloom's not a fan for whatever reason, but Pages is pretty clearly a stopgap so he's the guy to cash in for a mid-level prospect while he's cheap

With all the young pitchers the Mets have (McLean, Sproat, Tong, Scott) that are ready or close, ow many pitchers are they going to bring in? How many are they willing to trade? Can they actually fit Skubal into their payroll for more than one year?
Anthony Franco
3:58
If they can't fit Skubal in the budget, no one could. I don't see that as an impediment but remain highly skeptical that the Tigers will seriously consider trading him
4:00
I do think the Mets need to add at least two starters and should be willing to trade one of the four you mentioned -- not McLean unless Skubal's actually available or selling low on Scott midway through injury -- as a building block for someone with lesser control but is a more stable source of innings
Win-Win Trades
4:00
Is there another trade in "recent" history where both teams used the returns to make the World Series the way Arizona and Toronto have after the Varsho/Moreno/Gurriel deal? Seems like this is the type of deal that MLB almost never sees anymore.
Anthony Franco
4:01
I don't have one off the top of my head that got both teams to the World Series. The second Soto trade is pretty close though
4:02
Yankees won the pennant in his one year there. Padres got a really good season out of Michael King and would've gotten a second had he not gotten hurt this year, and they cashed Drew Thorpe in as the headliner for Cease
4:03
Obviously didn't break through either of the last two years but they were probably the second-best team in the National League in 2024 and were the only team who threatened the Dodgers at any point. I can't imagine they'd have been as good had they kept Soto and patched together the rotation with no payroll space
Giantsphan
4:03
Hey Anthony, do you think Buster will go after a big bat this offseason in addition to adding to our rotation?  Schwarber or Alonso perhaps?  Thank you
Anthony Franco
4:04
They should go after Tucker. I don't see how Alonso or Schwarber fit the roster when they've already got Devers signed forever
