Hey all, hope you've enjoyed your week!
It's a busy one for us so I'm going to stay around an hour today. Will try to move quickly with a bunch of stuff in the queue

What would be the cubs best option to plug as a partner at catcher with Amaya until Ballesteros  is ready to be called up ?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Jansen's probably the best catcher available but if they're back in on Amaya as a #1 option because of the strong finish, they could just bring Bethancourt back
Ross Atkins

Would signing Vlad Jr to an extension, resigning Teoscar Hernandez in free agency and a couple of bullpen arms in the Yimi Garcia class be enough to satisfy my increasingly restless fan base this winter?  Or should me and Mr Shapiro be scouring the want ads for our next jobs together?
Anthony Franco
4:00
Extending Vlad would be a huge boost in goodwill in the short-term but I don't think the series of moves you mentioned is enough to get them back to the postseason, so I doubt they'd be placated for long
4:01
I like the idea of bringing Teoscar back but they need to aim higher than the Yimi types in the bullpen, and they should bring in another starter as a hedge against regression from Francis or injury to any of their top guys
Bichette
4:01
What would it take for the Tigers to land Bichette this off season in hopes for a bounce back? Does Jung have enough value to headline the package?
Anthony Franco
4:02
If the Jays are willing to move Bo, I think Jung's a reasonable centerpiece, yeah. Not sure the Tigers would do it for a rental though
4:03
That'd be an interesting litmus test for how much Harris and co. really believe in the final six weeks of the season

Hi Anthony, what do you see in store for the Giants?  As a long-suffering fan, I’m not optimistic on Juan Soto, but would an offseason of say Jack Flaherty for the rotation, Rhys Hoskins for some thump at 1B on a 2 year deal, and a Ha-Seong Kim to play 2B/SS be enough if you bring back Yaz, Rogers, and Doval?
Anthony Franco
4:03
Rhys exercised his option with the Brewers. Giants could probably get him in trade still as a stopgap to Eldridge, which seems like a reasonable fit
4:05
I think the offseason you mentioned is plausible and would have them back in the Wild Card mix. I do expect them to be in on guys more impactful than Flaherty as they look for a headliner. I'm with you that they're likely not getting Soto, but Adames or Fried as a headliner of the winter instead of Flaherty is viable

4:05
What can the Cards realistically get for Ryan Helsley? Baltimore seems a natural fit but as a Cards fan I was interested in what type of prospects he would likely get given he’s the most attractive of the upcoming sell off.
Anthony Franco
4:06
I think he'd net a back of the Top 100 type prospect, maybe someone just off. It'd be a good headliner, though, a prospect who fits comfortably in the top 10 in the STL system
4:07
The only drawback is the one year of team control, but Helsley's awesome. Orioles make sense, sure. He could go to any contender really. Phils, Blue Jays, Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Rangers all work

Wilyer Abreu was listed as someone the Red Sox should trade. Who would be the best trading partner for him>
Anthony Franco
4:09
Seattle and Tampa Bay seem like the ones who could best match if the Sox shop Abreu for controllable, MLB-ready pitching. Pittsburgh's kinda deep in that regard and they already made the Priester/Yorke swap, but Abreu's not pulling Skenes or Jones so I don't know that it lines up from a value perspective
4:10
Miami could work too if the Sox are willing to take a chance on the health of a Luzardo or Garrett. Abreu has enough long-term control that the Fish could view him as a foundational part of the rebuild

When do players have to be moved from the IL?
Anthony Franco
4:11
I believe they've got until Monday to put everyone back on the 40
MoTork City

What are the odds we sign Bregman?
Anthony Franco
4:12
I'd give the Tigers like a 20% shot. One of the stronger roster fits on paper, obviously has the Hinch connection. I'm still in 'believe it when I see it' mode for Chris Ilitich approving something that big though

HOT TAKE: Peter Alonso holds out for a big contract until the beginning of Spring Training. He doesn't get it and then signs a one year deal with Reds.  HOT TAKE number 2: He then leads the league in Home Runs and RBI's.
Anthony Franco
4:13
I think there's a real chance the market collapses for Pete but it'd be two or three with opt-outs instead of one year
Reds could fit if that happens, sure. He'd destroy GABP

What do you expect for DeGrom in '25 and after?  Thanks,
Anthony Franco
4:15
I think he'll be awesome. The stuff was almost all the way back in September. Top 10 pitcher, maybe top 5, next year IMO
Arizona
4:15
Montgomery made the obvious choice. Is there any money to use? Or is the window closed when Gallen leaves and they should start looking to rebuild quickly again, hoping a young pitcher steps up or can be had in a trade of Zac?
Anthony Franco
4:17
Yeah they should have flexibility. Steve had them around $50MM south of this year's payroll even assuming Monty and Suárez were back. I think they could offload Geno to turn 3B to Lawlar and shed half the money on Monty to get him out the door
4:18
Bullpen needs work and they'll have to re-sign or replace Walker. Even if they bring Joc back, he's probably not going to hit as well as he did this year
4:19
But I don't think the window's closing even if Gallen walks. The lineup's too good for that, though they'll probably need to supplement the rotation more cheaply next offseason

What are the Angels doing?
Anthony Franco
4:19
I like the Soler trade well enough. They probably would've cut Canning anyways
4:20
We can argue that they should rebuild and prioritize the future but if ownership refuses, the front office needs to make the best of it. At least the Soler trade made them better without giving up anyone who could be a core future piece
4:21
Now if they follow up by trading Christian Moore in a Garrett Crochet package or something, I'll be back out. For now, it looks like they're going to add a few veteran players to raise the floor. They'll still end up short of contention but I don't mind them trying as long as they don't continue subtracting from the farm to do it
Kwan
4:21
With arbitration here, is the window for Cleveland to extend Steven Kwan gone?  What do you think the chances are?
Anthony Franco
4:23
No, I still think an extension is viable. He's projected around $4MM this year. They've got the Ramirez and Gimenez deals as their only long-term investments. Kwan's a really good player but hit-over-power corner bat isn't the kind of profile that's likely to net $150MM in a couple years
4:25
He's gotta beat Cronenworth and would probably get into the low nine figures, but that's the kind of deal we've already seen Cleveland do on Giménez

50MM (at most)  isn’t much to revamp a bullpen, replace the best 1B in the league, and fill DH…
