Anthony Franco

Hey everyone, hope you're all doing well! Not sure I'll be able to stick around much past 4:00 today but we can get started a few minutes early
Lots to discuss!

The Hot Stove is cooking! Mets adding Yamamoto and Montgomery, any ideas on a bat?
Anthony Franco
3:50
I doubt they get both Yamamoto and Monty but either one seems plausible. Yamamoto feels the likelier of the two
As for a bat, maybe they jump in on Teoscar? The corner OF picture is pretty bleak
Hits Like Rays
3:51
Who are the best young catchers that the Rays should be targeting to acquire this winter?
Anthony Franco
3:52
Iván Herrera feels like the chalk pick but there's reason for it. No real path to catching in STL, nothing left to prove in AAA
3:53
If you want a darker horse, they could try to push for Jake Rogers? Carson Kelly's not a great fallback for Detroit but it's possible they love one of Tampa Bay's middle infield options to make something work

3:53
What are the chances Pages spends 2024 with the big club?
Anthony Franco
3:54
Andy Pages, Dodger outfield prospect
Would be surprised if he starts the season in the majors -- basically zero Triple-A experience, missed most of last season to injury -- but he should be on and off the MLB roster throughout the year

Ryu: how much for how long from whom?
Anthony Franco
3:55
One year, $10-12MM range. Below Gibson and Severino for me, Lynn's kind of similar
3:57
There wasn't much to like about the performance last year besides the ERA. Never a huge velocity guy, but the whiffs were below pre-surgery levels. He didn't work deep into games and gave up a lot of home runs
3:58
A bunch of teams could be involved. If I had to pick one, I guess give me Pittsburgh. They need rotation help and the ballpark could mitigate some of the HR concerns
Dewey
3:58
Do you think the Sox consider Kutter Crawford to be a solid part of their rotation, or is he a placeholder/multi inning  reliever?
Anthony Franco
4:00
His second half was good enough that I'd be ok with him as a fourth or fifth starter. Would've put him as a swing guy a few months ago but he had a quietly good year
4:01
I'm a little concerned about potential platoon issues. He held lefties in check reasonably well overall but gave up a lot of fly balls, issued a few more walks than ideal. I think that could be a concern moving forward but that's pretty nitpicky and something you can work with from a back-of-the-rotation guy
Glasnow and Margot
4:02
Glasnow and Margot to the Reds makes almost too much sense to happen, right? Reds get one year of an ace at an expensive yet reasonable price and they can give him the QO next year. They also get a right-handed outfielder who can play all three spots to platoon with Friedl, Fraley, and Benson. Rays get a couple of young pitchers like Phillips and Richardson in return.
Anthony Franco
4:04
It's a lot of money for the Reds to take on in one trade but would shore up two areas of need, as you mentioned. Viable fit, and I think Connor Phillips as a Ray would be really interesting
Chourio
4:04
How does the Chourio extension impact the Crew’s likelihood to trade players like Burnes, Adames, and Williams?
Anthony Franco
4:05
Don't see these as related. Chourio's deal is probably going to be backloaded anyways
Ohtani or Group
4:05
I know it’s entirely dependent on team and market, but generally speaking, would you prefer to invest $550M in Ohtani or the same amount in a group like Yamamoto ($250M), Chapman ($150M), Hader ($100M), and perhaps more?
Anthony Franco
4:05
While I'm generally in the "spread the wealth, diversify risk" camp, just give me Ohtani here
4:07
I wouldn't be super enthused about either of Chapman or Hader at the prices we think they'll get. I'd be ok with Yamamoto at $250MM, I guess, but it's not like he's entirely without risk since he has no track record against MLB hitters

would kershaw sign now? or would he wait until healthy...during season (July maybe)...and then sign?
Anthony Franco
4:09
Neither scenario would surprise me. We kicked this around when debating whether he should still be on the Top 50 after the surgery was announced. I still lean towards him re-signing with the Dodgers during the offseason -- he's not a typical free agent who'll want to conduct showcases once healthy to get 10-15 teams involved -- but Tim was more of the mind that he'd probably just wait it out

do you expect brian anderson / brewers to be in the league next season?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Probably a minor league deal guy but one who has a decent shot at earning a roster spot out of Spring Training
Won't be with the Brewers, but I could see him on the A's or Nationals, sure
Doug E.
4:11
Any idea what takes MLB so long to decide on suspending Julio Urias?  He is a free agent and with winter meetings starting next week I would think teams would want to know his status not that I expect any team to sign him.
Anthony Franco
4:11
Presumably waiting on the court proceedings to play out first
Jeremy
4:11
Aside from Soto, what other big name hitters do you think are going to be traded?
Anthony Franco
4:12
We put together a top 25 trade candidates post a couple weeks ago, that basically all still stands. Any big-name players we expected to get traded were on there
To more directly answer your question, I'll say that I think we should've had Arozarena higher than 15th
Ryan
4:13
Did Seattle take the wrong Blue Jay in Teo? Will they make up for it by signing two former Jays in Lourdes Gurriel and Whitt Merrifield. They might not have the pop, but they hit.
Anthony Franco
4:14
Yeah either of these guys is a reasonable fit. I'd rather have Gurriel at four years than Merrifield for two, but Seattle makes sense for both
Ryan
4:14
Losing Paul Sewald hurt the Mariners. A Josh Hader signing to Seattle would be huge. Throw a dominate lefty in the mix with Brash and Munoz. Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Can't see them doing this though. Seems like they're up against it a little bit financially and they have bigger needs on the offensive side to pursue a luxury buy for a closer
