Anthony Franco
3:00
Hello again, hope you all had a good week!
Rick Hahn
3:01
Jean Segura 2/$25. Opt out after the first year. He'll get 10 the first year and 15 the second year of he opts in.
Anthony Franco
3:01
I'll take the under on that contract. Think Segura's more like 2/14 with no opt outs
Makes sense for the White Sox, sure
Metsiac
3:01
Which will be the closest/most exciting 3-team race-- NLE or NLW?
Anthony Franco
3:02
Guess I'm most interested in the NL West but the AL East and West should also be fun. The centrals remain pretty rough
AA
3:02
Elvis and Grissom are the SS for the year?
Anthony Franco
3:03
Yeah I could see that for the Braves. Also think there's a chance they just start with Arcia for a month if Grissom's coming along defensively and they're confident he'll be able to handle it for the bulk of the year
Marlins Man
3:03
What would have to go right for the Fish to make Playoffs this year?
Anthony Franco
3:05
Man, it's a lot in that division. You need bouncebacks from at least one of Avi or Soler, a top ten bullpen, full seasons from Jazz and (to a lesser extent) Cooper and a significant upgrade at third base to get in the conversation probably
Cubs Fan
3:05
Explain the Bellinger deal to me. Cubs aren't contending this year so in an ideal world he becomes MVP level hitter again and then gets traded at the deadline? Isn't that a huge risk for 19 million? Why would the cubs structure the deal to push $5 million into next year when they aren't going over the tax? Just seems like there is no upside for a non contending team.
Anthony Franco
3:06
Yeah I don't love it and the fact they keep deferring money via the mutual options is pretty weird since, as you said, ostensibly 2024's a more realistic contention window and they're just trying to leverage some short-term financial space without making many real commitments
3:08
I don't know what they're trying to achieve in general. Marginally improve a 74-win team, hope you catch the high end of variance and stumble to a division title because the NL Central is pretty weak? I wish there were a more clearly defined plan, but it seems like they just don't want to commit to a rebuild while also being averse to spending at the level it'd take to carry this roster to realistic contention
LongtimeNYY
3:08
Any off-the radar LFs you see out there?
Anthony Franco
3:09
Not really. David Peralta and Robbie Grossman are boring but generally fine and won't cost anything
Jeremy
3:09
is the Yankees rotation even the best in the AL East?
Anthony Franco
3:10
Yeah I think so. You're putting Toronto above them? Guess they kind of match at the high end but I'd easily take Severino/Montas over Berríos and Kikuchi at the back
Wayne
3:11
Name a free agent reliever or two that could help the Phillies round out their bullpen.
Joe
3:11
Who do Phils sign to complete offseason shopping?
Anthony Franco
3:11
Heyman said they like Seth Lugo as a reliever, which makes sense. Not clear if he'd prioritize going somewhere with a rotation opportunity
3:13
Ottavino's interesting. Colomé is fine, I've tried to give Will Smith to basically every contender at this point
AA
3:13
Do I just hate Casey Close? Is that why Dansby and Freddie are gone?
Anthony Franco
3:13
I'm not at the point of saying Dansby's gone but if we assume for the purpose of this question he is, I still don't think it's about Excel specifically
3:15
The Braves just have a lot of money already tied in younger players, which is what we've been pointing to all offseason. No team keeps everybody. The Braves have come close but preferred Olson to Freeman as a long-term bet (which was defensible) and seemingly bet on Riley of their left side infielders
Abe Froman
3:15
If the White Sox truly don't make an effort to fill the glaring holes on this roster is it safe to say this rebuild is already a bust?
Anthony Franco
3:16
I won't say bust necessarily, since even the current roster could hang around in the AL Central. But yeah, if they go roughly .500 again and start to break things up next offseason, it disappointed
Jack
3:16
Who will play left field for the Yankees?
Guest
3:16
when will the Yankees sign Andrew Benintendi?
Anthony Franco
3:17
Guest, who could be Jack for all I know, seems pretty confident it'll be Benintendi
3:18
I lean more towards Conforto or one of the stopgaps I mentioned in the earlier question. Don't know they'll have the appetite for four years on Benintendi with how much they've already spent this offseason
But it won't just be Aaron Hicks and Oswaldo Cabrera again
AA
3:18
Is it possible to move Ozzie back to SS and sign second baseman or put Grissom at 2B because he isn't a good defensive SS?
Anthony Franco
3:19
Feels too cute. Ozzie hasn't played a single major league inning at shortstop
Guess I could see a path to them doing this midseason if Grissom's a total disaster, but they'll give Grissom a crack at it first if they don't get a true shortstop this offseason
Giantsphan
3:19
What do you think of Farhan's continuing trend in handing out 2 year contracts to starting pitchers, with opt-outs after one year?  He keeps doing this, and then, time after time, that SP has a great year, walks, and the Giants are then in need again, for rotation pieces.  To me, it would seem if a FO is willing to take a flyer on a guy who has had a bad year, or is coming back from an injury, and said player pitches well, the contract should be Giants' friendly in year two, rather than allowing guys leave time and time again.  What's your opinion??  Thank you
Anthony Franco
3:21
If it were a straight two-year deal, then Manaea and Stripling (and Rodón last year) probably just don't take it. The opt-out is a huge selling point for those guys, it's not there for the Giants
3:23
Broadly speaking, I think it's a sound strategy though. Avoids the long-term injury downside of big investments for pitchers, which generally haven't turned out especially well over the past few seasons. I'd rather concentrate my larger investments in position players. The more success you have with it, the more desirable you become for future mid-tier buy-low targets like Manaea
Mike
3:23
Any word on whether Conforto's likely destination is narrowing in focus a bit?  I've heard a possible Mets reunion, but can't imagine they're the only team who could use a lefty bat around 125-130 OPS+ when healthy.
Anthony Franco
3:23
Yankees, Astros, Cubs, Marlins, Mariners have all been rumored at various points along with the Mets. Heyman linked Chicago, Miami and Houston again yesterday
3:24
I feel like the Mets' stuff was more contingent on losing Nimmo. Guessing Conforto finds a clearer path to everyday outfield reps elsewhere now
