Hot starting pitching market
4:11
Will the crazy high starting pitching prices lead to underwhelming prices on a different part of the market

Alluded to this in one of the earlier questions but we saw the mid-tier hitters get squeezed last winter (continuing a trend in that direction that's been going on for like a decade) and they're mostly lingering this time around
4:13
Also worth remembering that early prices always seem high and eventually there are guys left holding the bag. Last year's market sucked even for players at the top, but Aaron Nola got an extra year and $22MM over what we predicted when he signed in November

So it's possible there'll be isolated players even from ostensibly strong parts of the market who just overplay their hands (maybe in part because they expect the market to continue to rise given where it's started) and wind up signing late for below expectations

If the Orioles pony up for Burnes say 8 years 240,  would it be a smart move to front load the contract while the kids are cheap?  This way the the contract isn't killing them when his arm falls off in 5 years

I'm generally in favor of this as a strategy for the reason you mentioned but teams rarely do it. They almost always want to keep as much short-term spending capacity as possible to give themselves more flexibility at the deadline or next offseason
On a huge free agent deal, I get it. But you often see that even with pre-arbitration extensions. They typically climb year over year to mirror the way salaries would escalate if they player had gone through arbitration

There's no requirement that teams need to structure them like that, and a lot of times, the team signing that kind of deal is in a rebuild and they still prefer to kick the can down the road
Alright, I've gotta wrap up here

Still planning to do the Friday chats over the next couple weeks. Believe they'll be at 2:00 Central again, but we may end up moving one or both up an hour or so.
