They're presently projected for a franchise-record payroll and the eighth-highest figure in the league, per Cot's. It's fair to be disappointed as a fan that this is where ownership seems to be drawing the line for now, but it's not surprising to me
4:23
Most of those extensions are good value but they're still stacking up, and they've signed relievers like McHugh and Yates to contracts that tack on a few million. Taking on the Raisel Iglesias contract was huge
Not saying any of those are bad moves, to be clear. This front office has done a great job, and I still consider the Braves a top five team in MLB despite the lack of free agent activity this winter. Having a bunch of good players means they're eventually going to get expensive

What else can we do. A SS, catcher or SP

Anthony, thanks for all this year and the best at the holidays.  Looks like the Angels may need one more veteran starter (Wade Miley?), a reliever and someone to back up Mike Trout if (when) he goes down in centerfield.  any suggestions and thanks again.

Catcher seemed like a luxury target. They took a swing at Contreras but once it didn't work, just pivot back to O'Hoppe/Stassi
4:25
I think Drury and Urshela were their substitutes for directly adding a shortstop. Agree they could use another stable innings-eating starter in the Greinke or Cueto mold and one more interesting reliever
Correa
4:25
Do you really think he is hurt

Hey Anthony, happy holidays!  So, what a disappointing offseason for us Giants’ fans.  Ugh.  What does your gut tell you:  the Giants had legitimate concern about Correa’s health, or were they trying to get out of the deal?
Anthony Franco
4:26
Yes I think their doctors had legitimate concerns about the physical and they determined that $350MM wasn't a reasonable decision at that point. I don't think they just got cold feet out of nowhere
4:27
That doesn't mean their decision was right or wrong. Injury prediction is really difficult to begin with and different doctors are going to have different prognoses. But no, the Giants definitely didn't want this to happen

Happy Holidays. Hate to fire anyone right before Christmas, but Zaidi has to go, don't you think? Whether it was an owners decision the way this went down is unacceptable. He's lost the fan base...along with his credibility, and all the Conforto's in the world are not going to fix it.
Anthony Franco
4:28
Bad offseason for them but that'd be an overreaction IMO. Zaidi couldn't have known Correa's physical wouldn't go well, and the fact that all the other free agents were off the board by then is kind of a weird timing quirk
4:29
I do not expect he'll be fired this offseason, to more directly answer your question

Could the Braves put a package together for Bryan Reynolds, Say Anderson and prospects to pry him away from Pirates?  Seems like a good left field solution
Anthony Franco
4:30
They probably could but Anderson isn't going to be the headliner after the year he just had. I imagine Pittsburgh's starting with Vaughn Grissom

Is there any consensus on how much the Competitive Balance picks are valued when it comes to trading them? Thinking of the Mariners, who have three picks in the Top 30 in 2023, and how potent of a trade chip that pick may (or may not) be in the Reynolds sweepstakes.
Anthony Franco
4:31
Not super defined but they don't have as much value as you might think. It's not like the NFL where teams fall over themselves to acquire a first-round pick. There's more variability in the MLB draft, particularly towards the back of the round
4:32
The Brewers traded a competitive balance pick for Alex Claudio -- a fine but boring lefty specialist reliever -- a couple years ago
4:33
It's more akin to a mid-tier prospect than a marquee trade asset. No one you draft with one of those picks immediately jumps into Baseball America's top 100 or anything of that nature

What does the Bauer ruling mean for the Dodgers' payroll situation?
Anthony Franco
4:34
They have to pay him around $22MM next year even if they release him. That also goes onto their luxury tax ledger and basically puts them right at the base tax threshold

What are the chances the White Sox Jean Segura?
Anthony Franco
4:35
I'd put them right there among the favorites

I keep hearing my name as a possibility for a reunion with the dodgers

Sure I like this. Veteran insurance in case Trayce Thompson takes a step back, makes sense

Can the Diamondbacks get some love?
Anthony Franco
4:36
They're interesting! Still have questions about the pitching depth and left side of the infield but I like a lot of what they have
4:38
Going to be a playoff long shot probably but they should be fun to watch. They might be the third-best team in the NL West
4:39
Having some weird Internet issues, sorry. Monitoring the chat on my phone to make sure everything's going through but apologies in advance if things drop out for a couple minutes

What's baseball's no-one-can-agree-on-what-happened version of the Immaculate Reception? (RIP, Franco Harris)
Anthony Franco
4:39
Hmm, interesting question. Whether Babe Ruth called his shot?
4:40
Is the Jeffrey Maier game controversial? I honestly don't know if Yankees fans' consensus opinion is that should've been a home run

Merry Christmas and thanks for the chat. Do you have any insight as to why SFG scheduled a presser to announce Correa before all the medicals and everything else was in place? This is the opposite of ‘due diligence’. Thanks
Anthony Franco
4:40
Teams do this all the time. They never expect the player to fail the physical
4:41
Believe the pressers for Judge and Verlander were finalized before the deal became official. Pretty sure the Cubs did with Dansby as well

Does Joey Votto simply retire when his contract is up? They clearly won't be resigning him...
Anthony Franco
4:42
I lean towards yes

With the Mets dumping McCann for 5 mil, the next NY salary dump should be the Yankees and Donaldson so they can get a left fielder and stay below the last tier of salary tax.  Is there a team that could use him for one year and 6 mil or so?  If so who?  And is it going to happen?
