It's a profile that teams could evaluate dramatically differently. One could see him as an above-average regular who has the ability to play center and provide top 10 offense at the position. Another could feel he's a left fielder without corner OF power, as you mentioned

We're still early but wondering if any teams at this point might feel (rightly or wrongly) that their offseason is mainly done.  Royals?  Diamondbacks?  Mozeliak has added starters but surely the Cardinals still have work to do.  Thank you so much for your work with MLBTR, including the excellent podcast!

Wrote about K.C. this morning obviously, but they'd fit there. I don't think the D-Backs are done. Would still like to see Atlanta add another starter. If they come away with Kelenic in LF and hoping Reynaldo López steps into the rotation, that's an oddly risky offseason for a team that really only needed two or three acquisitions

Sir! So, why did the Jays sign IKF, when they already have two utility players that are at the same skill level or better than IKF, and much cheaper?
Anthony Franco

I also don't get it

Cohen had obviously shifted away from just throwing money at the team to win.  If the Mets extend Alonso, do you think they will make a run at Soto next offseason?
Anthony Franco
4:10
Yeah, Soto's a unique opportunity. I agree they're moving away from throwing money at late-30s players at will but Soto's closer in age to Yamamoto than he is to most free agents and it's superstar talent
Remaining pitchers
4:10
Padres and Mets don’t plan on spending big right now (Yamamoto was an exception).  Phillies have pivoted to extending Wheeler.  With several big spenders sort of “sitting out” this off-season, I think the contracts for remaining starters will be lower than expected.  What say you?
Anthony Franco

Red Sox are still in there, Angels have a ton of payroll space. Giants or Yankees could still go after one of those guys, Cubs as well. I think they'll be fine

Besides Colt Keith, who are some Rookie of the Year candidates in the AL? Seems like a relatively small class compared to the past two years.
Anthony Franco
4:13
Jackson Holliday and Evan Carter are the big ones. Wyatt Langford could get in there, maybe Kyle Mazardo with Cleveland
4:14
It's probably a little bit down relative to the past couple seasons but doesn't seem dramatically so. Had Jasson Domínguez not gotten hurt, he'd have been right up there as well

What is your current $ and team guess on Imanaga? Is 5/115 to Giants plausible?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Seems reasonable, sure
4:16
I'd go with the Cubs but the Giants are a perfectly fine pick. If he gets to $115M, it probably stretches over six. I'd go 5/105

Happy New Year, Anthony and thanks for a year of great chats.  OK, the Royals (106 losses) were able too sign both Michael Wacha & Seth Lugo.at reasonable contracts in terms of length and dollars.  Am I wrong in thinking that the Angels should have signed both guys.  Closer to contention and the limited contracts that shouldn't have scared off Arte Moreno?  (Don't think they have a chance to get Snell...unless they overpay, which Moreno won't do for a pitcher.)   Your thoughts.

If the Angels added Montgomery, Justin Turner, Hector Neris, and Matt Moore, do you think they could compete in the tough, West Conference?
Anthony Franco
4:18
I think the Angels are a little closer than the Royals but not dramatically so. I don't mind them taking a swing for an ace as opposed to another of the Tyler Anderson-style deals
4:20
Even if they got Monty, Turner and the relievers, I wouldn't pick them as a playoff team. The 1-26 roster would be a Wild Card bubble type, but the depth is rough and most of their position players have notable injury histories

What's your level of confidence in Oneil Cruz this year?
Anthony Franco
4:22
I feel alright about him being a productive regular. Not confident that he reaches the star ceiling, though. The ankle robbed him of a pretty crucial year for development reps on both sides of the ball
Have to wrap things up here

Sorry if I didn't get to your question. As always, feel free to reach out on Twitter. I'll try to get back to you on there over the weekend

Otherwise we'll do this again next Friday. Thanks for all the questions and for supporting the site! Happy New Year, until 2024
