Anthony Franco

Hey all, hope everything is well!
4:00
Let's kill an hour of Ohtani watch
Erik
4:00
Where do the Padres go from here? Mid-tier to back end rotation help and pray that they aren't outbid for Lee?
Anthony Franco
4:01
Yeah I think those are the priorities. Bullpen also needs a little help and Preller acknowledged they'll try to bring in one high-leverage guy
Bill G.
4:01
What is a "split major league contract" and does it only apply to someone who's injured like Perdomo
Anthony Franco
4:01
A split deal means a player gets a spot on the 40-man roster but his guaranteed salary is less if he's in Triple-A than it would be while he's in the majors
4:03
It doesn't have to be for players coming off injury, no, although it tends to be for lower-tier free agents of Perdomo's ilk. Most notable free agents have enough leverage in negotiations to guarantee their MLB salary regardless of whether they're on the major league roster or sent to Triple-A

if SF somehow signs Bellinger and Chapman they will need to make room. What kind of return could they expect on Yaz, JD Davis, or Conforto? Are we talking middle relievers and B- level prospects?
Anthony Franco
4:05
That seems right for Davis and Yaz (think the latter has slightly more value of the two). They'd have to pay down some money to get any kind of return on Conforto. $18MM coming off an average offensive season without much value in the outfield isn't exactly appealing

Thanks for the chat. So when I see comments that players won't sign in SF because of the problems in the city it makes me laugh. As if the Giants players all live in some transient hotel in the Tenderloin. I mean how many Yankees players live in the Bronx?
Anthony Franco
4:05
I agree, I think that's a nonsensical narrative
4:06
Judge wanted to remain a Yankee, Trea Turner wanted to be on the East Coast. They didn't bid enough for Harper and the Giants backed out on Correa after he agreed to there
4:07
We'll see what Ohtani says when he makes the decision but it's not that hard to see him viewing Toronto (if that's what it ends up being) as in a better competitive window than SF
Michael
4:07
If Dodgers miss out on Ohtani, they pivot to who?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Feels like Yamamoto is the next big target for them regardless of the Ohtani call. If Ohtani goes to the Jays, the Dodgers probably circle back on J.D. Martinez pretty quickly at DH
Michael Bush
4:08
Am I 4A player?  Seems like the Dodgers think so…
Anthony Franco
4:09
I think he can be more than that but it probably requires a trade. He's not a second baseman or left fielder for me. The Dodgers can't offer first base and are probably too firmly in win-now mode to count on him at DH
I think Busch can hit but the margin for error is really thin when you're as limited defensively as he is
Padre Jonathan
4:10
It took nearly 2 years for HS Kim to reach the level we needed him to for competition. Part of that was adjustments. But I'm not sure the Padres can afford that with Lee in the next year. It feels like a smarter move to go bigger on another pitcher and maybe smaller on OF replacements. We lost Soto's power but we didn't utilize it properly last year anyway.
Anthony Franco
4:11
I think this is a fair argument. Based on the handful of scouting reviews we've gotten and his KBO numbers, I'm not as enamored with Lee as the market seems to be
I'd probably also prioritize pitching and go with a Michael A. Taylor type to more affordably plug into center field, but the Padres seem all-in on Lee
Bill
4:11
Whom do you think the Braves add to their rotation or should they have faith in their present crop of newbies?
Anthony Franco
4:12
Still expect an addition. I put them as my pick for Wacha at the start of the offseason and don't see a reason to move off that yet
4:13
Someone from the middle tier of free agency to slot into the fourth spot in the rotation is the finishing touch for this roster
Doug E.
4:13
By the time the chat starts the Ohtani sweepstakes maybe resolved.  My question is based on the first report that he is signing with the Blue Jays.  If it proves accurate which free agent/japanese pitcher do you think the Dodgers should target?  Also regarding a DH I am fine with bringing JD Martinez back any other suggestions?  Thank you.
Anthony Franco
4:13
Still unresolved!
4:14
Just answered a similar question but either of Soler or Teoscar could work if they didn't reunite with Martinez for some reason
Rodon Right On?
4:14
Cashman likes overpaying/ trading for pitchers with injury histories, who have some upside, going back to the good old days of Carl Pavano.......besides Montas, who fits that profile?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Jack Flaherty or, more affordably, Spencer Turnbull?
Guest
4:15
Yankees as is are obviously better, but I don't think Soto alone puts them into the world series contender conversation. Am I way off here?
Anthony Franco
4:17
I think it depends on how you define "World Series contender." I agree they're not a top five team in MLB. Could they make the playoffs and go on a run where they knock off a couple better teams? Sure. They're better than the 2023 Diamondbacks, for instance
Mugatu
4:17
As a Reds fan, am I taking crazy pills if I’m pumped about the JC signing, even if they don’t make a trade? The offense went through some rough patches last year and you have to expect some regression from guys like Steer and McClain. Depth could be their weapon, and there is always the trade deadline
Grinch
4:17
How will Cincy clear the infield logjam they added to by signing Candelario?
Anthony Franco
4:19
They could kick Steer more or less full-time to left field and keep everyone. That's the plan Nick Krall has put forth publicly, at least. It's fair to say it's in his interest to downplay his desire to clear the logjam, but they also held everyone at the deadline when you could have made a similar argument
4:20
I'd be ok with the Candelario deal regardless of what they do. 3/45 is just good value for that player and, to Mugatu's point, having a lot of multi-positional infield depth isn't the worst thing in the world
Michael
4:21
Hi Anthony, Thanks for doing this!  It's not in Anthopoulos' DNA to go after an Ohtani or Yamamato, but do those guys need to sign before we see any movement for the Braves SP needs?
Anthony Franco
4:23
Maybe they're indirectly held up a little bit -- if they're in on Cease and the White Sox want to wait on Yamamoto to trade him or something like that -- but I don't think it's a huge factor. There are a few teams (Atlanta and Cincinnati jump to mind) that could just strike for a mid-tier free agent or trade for Glasnow, Bieber, etc. because they know they're not making a run at Yamamoto
Question Mark
4:23
Happy Holiday time. Holliday too!   Thoughts on the effectiveness of relievers Jansen and Alzolay for the 2024 season. Is Jansen becoming less effective?  Is Alzolay good enough to be the man in Chicago?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Kenley still looks good. Velocity had started to trend down but bounced back last year. He's not the best closer in baseball anymore obviously, but I don't think he's in any jeopardy of losing the ninth inning or anything like that
4:26
Alzolay has the stuff to close but I'm a little apprehensive on the injury history there
