Hey everyone, hope all of you who celebrate have had a great Christmas/Hanukkah!
3:02
May need to wrap this up right around 3:00 depending on news flow, we'll see

Are Corbin Burnes and Pete Alonso in danger of becoming this years version of the "Boras 4"? Not sure who is left that is willing to pay them the big bucks that they are asking for.
Anthony Franco
3:03
Alonso always felt to me like the likeliest player to end up in that bucket. I still think Burnes is going to get the long-term deal somewhere, but if we get a week or two into January and he's still not signed, I'd start to wonder about three or four years with opt-outs
Re: luxury tax
3:03
Hypothetically, could the mets sign Alonso to a 3yr $70MM deal with opt outs after every season, but pay him $30 mil in each of the first two seasons and $10 mil in the last in order to lower the luxury tax hit? Alonso would likely opt out before the last year and the mets would lower their luxury bill. Would Manfred veto something like this?
Anthony Franco
3:05
I assume the league would accept that but they wouldn't like it. It's not that much different than what Bellinger and the Cubs did though. I don't see why MLB would allow that one while blocking this in the Mets' case
Highly doubt Alonso would accept that offer right now but if we get to February and he's one of the last big names available, it'd make sense
Plan Z
3:06
Is the plan to see if the M's sign Sasaki before deciding to trade Castillo or another starter? Will there be...anyone left to trade for or sign by that point?!
Anthony Franco
3:06
I don't think they can wait on Sasaki before deciding what to do with Castillo for that reason
3:07
Good chance he ends up somewhere other than Seattle, and if they're waiting until the middle of January to find that out, they'll run low on available hitters they can turn to
3:08
They made an offer to Santana that was better than what he got but he wanted to go back to Cleveland. Can't do anything about that really. But the first base market is drying up, so they may need to get an MLB bat or two in the Castillo deal if they're going to move him
Impatient Reds fan
3:09
Who are some low risk/high reward relievers that will probably sign for 3 mil or less.
Anthony Franco
3:10
Anyone who's low risk and high reward is topping $3MM. If you want high-risk, high-reward, someone like Keynan Middleton could land around there

Word came today that Gleyber Torres refused a deal from the Nationals a little larger than the one from Detroit because he doesn't want to play third base. Nice to see the Nats trying, but does this mean they are not willing to go for Bregman money? If so, who should they try to sign or trade for instead?
Anthony Franco
3:11
Nothing to suggest they've been in on Bregman. Pretty disappointing offseason for them so far given the expectations that Rizzo put out there in talking about the need for multiple middle-of-the-order bats
Still think the D-Backs could get to a point where they trade Suárez, especially if they drop eight figures on a David Robertson or Kirby Yates to close. Beyond that, guess Washington could try to float third base as an option for Jorge Polanco?
Santander & Hernandez
3:12
Where are we playing next year?  Should we have signed our QO's?
Anthony Franco
3:13
Jays need to come away with one of those guys, probably Santander. Maybe the Reds or Royals for Teoscar
3:14
They'll do better than the QO. Feels like the downside for either one is two years around $40MM with an opt-out
No reason they won't easily beat Michael Conforto money

Can Dylan Carlson find an MLB job or would he be better served getting ABs in the minors?
Anthony Franco
3:15
Feels like a minor league deal
Got traded for a rental middle reliever when he was an ostensible change of scenery candidate and continued to play at a sub-replacement level down the stretch
Angels In The Outfield
3:16
While I like moves the Angels have made thus far, their outfield is still suspect.  I don't see them going after a FA that declined a QO so as to not give up draft capital.  SO, who do they go after?  A trade for Lane Thomas? Pick up Harrison Bader, Tommy Pham or Amed Rosario?  What would you do?
Anthony Franco
3:16
I like Bader there. Shouldn't cost more than $6-8MM, allows them to move Trout into the corner and make sure that Adell and Moniak aren't regulars
Sasaki
3:17
Will I start in Triple A or break right into the majors?
Anthony Franco
3:17
Big leagues
Has to sign a minor league deal but whatever team gets him will select his contract at the end of Spring Training. Starting him in Triple-A would be the wildest case of service time manipulation we've seen haha

Does Bregman sign with the RedSox and at the point what gets it done?
tigerFan
3:18
Does signing Torres take us out of the running for Bregman?
Artie G Man
3:18
What do you think the Yankees will do for 3rd base? Will Arenado waive his no trade clause to them? Do they Sign Bregman?
Bregman Landing
3:18
With Detroit singing Torres....where does Bregman land?  Will the deal be for 5 years and in the 140-150 million range, as the number of teams appears to be dropping?
Anthony Franco
3:19
Understandably got a bunch of these. It's drying up quickly. He was a tough one to peg from the beginning of the offseason, and taking Houston out of it really thins it
3:20
I'd still take the over on the 156 he declined from the Astors but only marginally. Would have below Adames money at this point
I guess give me the Jays as a landing spot but I don't like it
Nolan Arenado's Bat Speed
3:20
How much of an issue is Arenado's declining bat speed and the number of pitchers with no fear of the middle of the zone challenging him?
Anthony Franco
3:23
Yeah I think the lack of power production (which is obviously directly linked to bat speed) is the biggest reason he hasn't moved since he vetoed the Houston deal. He's clearly trending downward offensively, which puts the contract a little above market value
wvpirate
3:23
At this point are the Pirates planning on starting Nick Volpe in the outfield? Or are there more moves coming?
Anthony Franco
3:24
Outfield in general is moving really slowly. Still think they'll make a move, just waiting it out to see if something totally craters
At least leaves open the possibility that Profar's still out there in February and willing to sign for Max Kepler money
