Hey everyone, hope you all had a great week!
4:01
Looking forward to another chat, let's get started
Tony
4:01
Thanks for the chats. Would like to see the Cards simplify the logjam in the outfield a bit. Assuming mid-season trade fodder for the most part, do you see any of the non MLB roster bringing anything of value or just throw-ins to provide quantity on an impact trade? Obviously not including Walker but I am including everyone else--Burleson, Donovan, Yepez & perhaps Carlson. Thank you
Anthony Franco
4:02
Donovan and Carlson are locks to be on the MLB roster. I think Yepez will be too at the start of the season
4:03
But to your broader point, yeah they'd all have trade value. Carlson and Donovan are the most appealing. Burleson seems like a guy where teams are going to have pretty disparate takes on his value because he's a good contact hitter but doesn't have eye-catching physical tools
4:04
Yepez is probably the least valuable. Wouldn't certain a trade package for anyone notable but sure, he could be of interest to somebody as a secondary or tertiary piece in a deal
4:05
Headline, not certain*
Going to blame that on autocorrect, ha

4:05
What could the Cubs realistically expect to get in return for Nick Madrigal?
Anthony Franco
4:06
Not much right now. Not much defensive versatility, longstanding questions about whether he's got enough offensive juice to be a regular at second base. Pretty limited appeal

Camilo Doval said in an interview that he takes a while between pitches to allow his arm to recover from the last pitch. Do you think the pitch clock to result in increase of arm fatigue and injuries among high velocity throwers?
Anthony Franco
4:07
Plausible, sure. It's been in effect in the minors for a while now though and there's no indication it has dramatically increased injury rates for pitchers
4:08
Feels like it'll be a situation akin to what happened with the initial sticky stuff crackdown: an individual pitcher or two gets hurt, attributes it (at least in part) to the pitch clock, the league counters that pitcher injuries are inevitable and there's no way to prove what specifically caused it
Matt
4:08
Can teams still do 5 man infields at end of game situations when they need a double play/force out or are those illegal now with the shift rules?
Anthony Franco
4:09
You can still do a five-man infield, yeah
Brewers
4:09
I would rather the Brewers trade Burnes, Woodruff, and Adames (if they are unable to sign any of them to a long term deal) than keep them around. I know that sounds crazy but it makes more sense to replenish your farm system
Anthony Franco
4:10
At some point, they'll do this with at least one or two of those guys. They'll have to take trade offers if there aren't extensions in place before they depart in free agency
4:11
It's not going to be before Opening Day, though. They'd all still have a lot of appeal (barring injury or underperformance) next offseason if Milwaukee's close enough to contention to try to ride things out for one more year
Ryan
4:11
Did Jerry think the trade market was going to be better and thats a big reason he let Haniger go? Dipoto talks about still needing a right hand bat. I feel like Haniger could have been that guy. 7 mill for Pollock and money for another guy.
Anthony Franco
4:13
Yeah I could see that. Doesn't seem they were ever matching the Giants' price given Haniger's injury history but in retrospect, maybe they wish they'd made the qualifying offer
4:15
Get why they wouldn't want to risk tying up $20MM at the start of the offseason, but it does feel like they kind of fell back on Pollock after the outfield trade market didn't really materialize. Maybe there just wasn't room for both Haniger and Teoscar on the books

With the Reds and Pirates better (=not as terrible as '22), the Brewers and Cubs with patchwork rosters, and the Cards stars due for decline, could 85-86 wins take the NL Central this year?
Anthony Franco
4:15
I like the Cardinals more than you do
Vegas Lee
4:16
will ohtani bat 3rd, mike trout cleanup in angels lineup this coming spring......
Anthony Franco
4:16
Haven't seen Nevin comment on this but I'd guess they stick with Trout second and Ohtani third most days
4:17
Teams like putting their best hitter in the #2 spot now generally (just gets a few more at-bats over the course of the season than the cleanup hitter will) and Trout's higher OBP probably plays a little better in front of Ohtani's power than it does behind him
It's a really small margin either way

4:18
Does colt Keith have a chance to debut this year or is next season more likely?
Anthony Franco
4:18
2024 feels likelier. Still hasn't reached Double-A, doesn't have to go on the 40-man roster to stay out of the Rule 5 draft until the 2024-25 offseason
4:20
Maybe he hits at Gunnar Henderson levels in his first crack at the upper minors, though then you get the question of whether a presumably non-competitive Detroit team would want to start his service clock late this year

Is '23 Make Or Break for the Pale Hose and Rick Hahn
Anthony Franco
4:20
Kinda feels that way, right? If they struggle, there's a real argument for moving some of the core like Giolito and Anderson who are within a season or two of free agency
4:21
And if you're going to do another retool or rebuild, that might lead to a regime change
soxfan
4:21
Any life left in Dalbec that he might be tradable?
Anthony Franco
4:22
Somebody would take him but the Red Sox wouldn't get anything notable in return. Obviously he has huge power but it just seems like he can't make contact against MLB pitching consistently
Chain Bloom
4:23
What are the chances we call up Marcelo Mayer this summer and whether we do or not, do you think he's a true future superstar?
Anthony Franco
4:23
Same logic as applies to Colt Keith above. I'd be shocked if he's up this year
4:24
But yeah, I'm all in on him as a player. Thought he was  the best player in that draft class. The ease with which he does everything is really impressive
Don
4:24
Would you trade Bichette for Luis Robert?   Thank You!
Anthony Franco
4:25
I don't know if this is for fantasy or IRL. Fantasy purposes: no, I think Bichette's a better hitter
