Hey all, hope you've had a good week
3:01
Have to keep this one around an hour, let's get started
Orioles Forever
3:01
Are the Cards really bringing in Crawford to play once or twice a week? Should Winn fans be worried>
Anthony Franco
3:02
Wouldn't be worried at all about Crawford blocking Winn's opportunity. They've been clear it's there for Winn to take and Crawford isn't an everyday caliber shortstop at this point of his career
3:04
If Winn starts the season terribly and is sitting on like a .270 OBP through mid-May, maybe Crawford makes it easier for them to send Winn back to Memphis at that point. But they're trying to contend this year so they can't afford to punt the position entirely, so they'd have probably moved Edman back to SS and plugged Carlson in CF if Winn's bat just isn't ready

3:04
Hey Anthony, what was your take on Manoah’s first spring outing? Some people overreact but I mean hey it’s the first 2 innings of spring.
Anthony Franco
3:05
Yeah I don't care about the results. It's his first game action in months, not surprising he had trouble finding the strike zone
Padre Jonathan
3:06
Seriously, I know you’re sick of my Preller questions but what the heck is going on here. I feel Kiki’s comments were a reference to SD “giving tv revenue excuses” and Preller isn’t even serious for #5 OFs to fill starting roles. And we have barely half SP innings filled. I’m just lost as a fan.
Anthony Franco
3:07
Hernández took shots at a bunch of teams citing the TV revenue, Padres included. I don't think it was directed at them any more than, say, Minnesota or Texas
3:08
That said, I totally get your frustration with the offseason. They've got less than three weeks before their Opening Day and are short like four MLB-caliber players. They can't throw like $2MM apiece at Joey Votto and Eddie Rosario? It's weird
Question Mark
3:09
Do you think the Mets have stitched together a potent bullpen?
Anthony Franco
3:10
Potent might be overstating it. I think it's alright. Should miss a lot of bats but the middle innings guys they've brought in have significant control questions even by middle reliever standards
Matt
3:10
When is the offseason review by team series going to start?
Anthony Franco
3:11
We don't have an official start date on this -- we've sort of been waiting it out for free agency to wrap up -- but we'll probably have to get going within the next week or so
3:12
I'm going on vacation at the end of the month so I hope to have my portion of the OiR stuff finished within the next three weeks, at least
Chip
3:12
Could you in your wildest dream imagine that if a free agent signing deadline was set telling an agent & player that if you don't sign a contract by a designated date that you are done for the season ????
Anthony Franco
3:13
Players union won't even go for a signing deadline on a multi-year deal. They're certainly not signing off on one that requires a player to sit out the season altogether
Pip
3:13
Is the Orioles strength on offense and defense enough to offset the loss of Bradish and Means? They should still be the favorites in the east even if the Yankees add another solid starter, right?
Anthony Franco
3:14
If the Yankees sign Snell and the O's do nothing else, it's pretty close. I think I'd still lean Baltimore based on the position player depth and the bullpen, though
Ron
3:15
Hi Anthony,  Austin Barnes, even if Kershaw likes pitching to him, how can the Dodgers justify keeping him on the roster?  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
3:16
He's not a good hitter but he probably won't be as bad as he was last season. A lot of teams carry a backup catcher based almost entirely on his receiving skills and rapport with the pitching staff
3:17
In a vacuum, he's probably better suited as an NRI than locked in as the backup, but the Dodgers have enough talent that they can punt on this one a little bit. If Will Smith gets hurt and they're relying on Barnes to play regularly, that's obviously something they'd have to address during the season
Mike D
3:17
Is it possible that the Reds have too much starting pitching?  I know you can never have too much but it sure is nice problem to have!
Anthony Franco
3:19
They've got a lot of talent but Montas is the only one in the group who has an extended track record of being a productive MLB starter, and he's coming off a season and a half lost to shoulder injuries
3:22
I think they've stockpiled enough promising arms that they'll be successful, but I'm probably not as all-in as you are. Pitching thins quickly. Look at how little time passed for the Marlins between 'having so much starting pitching they had to trade one for offense' to giving Bryan Hoeing starts
Robert Jaffa
3:22
Tick tock. Chapman signs before March 15? I reviewed his amazing DRS track record. I can’t imagine he isn’t SF bound. I don’t think SF should seek opt outs. 5 yrs/95. Save 6m in that salary by trading Davis. Could they get a #5 SP for JD?
Anthony Franco
3:24
This all seems reasonable. Giants indeed seem like the best fit for Chapman at this point. 5/95 without an opt-out is probably disappointing for him, but it's hard to see him doing much better than that and there's a case for just taking the max value that he can get
3:25
Davis returning a back-end starting pitching option seems fine. I don't think they'd get anyone who's clearly better than Keaton Winn, but they should be able to add an upper level depth arm who could battle for starts throughout the season
Ryan
3:25
Do the Seattle Mariners need to give Harry Ford a look at another spot and not just catcher? Or Could you see them alternate catcher and DH?
Anthony Franco
3:26
I wouldn't move him off because of Raleigh's presence, if that's what you mean. Still have a couple years to figure that out
3:28
I don't know enough about him to have an opinion as to whether he'll be a viable defensive catcher, but the public scouting reports on him suggest he's making progress. I don't think he'd hit enough to be a regular at DH, but he could be one of those weird utility types who occasionally catches and is athletic enough to bounce around the infield

3:28
Is there any thought of collusion among the owners with a handful of very prominent FAs unable to get offers?  It’s not like that happened before…
Anthony Franco
3:29
There are whispers about it every offseason. Kiké Hernández basically accused them of colluding yesterday
3:30
But there's nothing substantive to say that's actually what's happening. Exaggerating the impact of possible TV revenue losses and collusion are very different things
3:32
The market hasn't been good, especially for mid-tier hitters. Ironically I actually think Hernández did pretty well to get $4MM coming off the last two seasons, but that's beside the point. That should be concerning to the PA but it's not against the CBA

3:32
Do giant fans have anything to look forward to in 2024?
Anthony Franco
3:33
Webb's awesome. Whatever you think about the contract, Jung Hoo Lee is an exciting player to watch. Soler's a good addition
3:34
I still like a lot of the pieces here even if I'm underwhelmed by the offseason as a whole and think they're a little below Wild Card contention
Sully
3:35
What's your take on Tristan McKenzie's elbow?  How risky is it to draft him?
Anthony Franco
3:36
I'd be pretty concerned about any pitcher who was limited to four MLB starts last season because of a UCL injury
