Anthony Franco
3:00
Hey all, hope everyone enjoyed Opening Day!
3:01
Looking forward to another of these, let's get it going

Long term, who do you see at first base for the A's. Soderstrom or Kurtz? Thanks for the chat.
Anthony Franco
3:03
I think it's Kurtz but would be a good problem to have if Soderstrom hits enough to make them think about it. If they both work out, maybe they experiment with Sodestrom in left field down the line. Still need plenty of development from both guys before they need to think about it though
Guardians

Can we overcome the extreme lack of offense to win the division? Wild Card spots don’t seem likely this year.
Anthony Franco
3:05
They're my pick to win the Central, so yeah, I think so. Doesn't seem like the ALC would get a Wild Card given the strength of the other two divisions, but I would've said that last year and the Central ended up with three playoff teams
3:07
I don't think Cleveland will have a great offense but I like the Jones rebound flier more than if they'd run it back with Brennan. Thomas should be better than he was down the stretch. I still think Juan Brito could provide similar offense at second base to what they got from Giménez once he comes up (albeit with much less defensively). Given the strength of the bullpen and the production you can bank on from Ramírez and Kwan, I'm pretty bullish overall
Tyler O’Neil
3:07
Should teams just give me the Barry Bonds treatment on opening day?
Anthony Franco
3:08
Ha yeah, six straight is incredible. I was somehow unaware of that streak until he did it again yesterday

Any idea on if the Cards have talked about extending Fedde and Helsley? If not, would them plus Gorman, Burleson, Siani, Crooks, and maybe Hjerpe be enough for Trout? Cards luxery tax payroll over the next 4 years is $165m, $90m, $71m, and $23m according to RosterResource on FanGraphs...they could "easily" handle Trout's deal and the Angels need help almost everywhere. Hence seems like a logical fit for a closer, nasty stuff but has not reached 100 innings in any season thus far.
Anthony Franco
3:10
Helsley has said repeatedly that there's been nothing in terms of extension talks. Fedde hasn't spoken about it publicly as far as I know, but it seems like they want the books as clean as possible when Bloom takes over
They're not going to trade for Trout, nor do I expect the Angels to consider moving him unless he forced his way out (which he has plenty of opportunities to do and never has before)
DFA flurry
3:10
Which DFAs on Trade Rumors recent list do you think will get swooped up via claim or minor trade?
Anthony Franco
3:13
I think someone will take a shot on Canario's power despite the strikeout issues. Miami's running out Griffin Conine, Kyle Stowers, Derek Hill and Dane Myers in the outfield while Jesús Sánchez is hurt. I'd rather have Canario than any of those guys
3:14
Padres seem to think they're losing Eguy Rosario via trade or waivers. Nick Robertson still has an option and has shown decent strikeout stuff in the minors. He's the kind of reliever who tends to bounce around the waiver wire forever
Dano
3:14
What's the over/under on when Brandon Sproat gets into the Mets rotation and his odds of staying there?
Anthony Franco
3:18
July? He got bombed over seven starts after they moved him up to Triple-A and the Mets brought in a lot of depth starters. They brought Scott up pretty early last season but he started carving up Triple-A the second he got there
Tigers
3:18
Are having shortstop, 3rd base, and outfield problems. Tell me things will get better.
Anthony Franco
3:19
Injuries hit them hard in center field. It happens, just have to ride that out. The left side of the infield was always a question mark. Sweeney stabilized things defensively but probably can't hit much. They'll need a major step forward from Jung or they're patching it together with the McKinstry, Ibanez, Vierling types again at third

3:20
Whats your over/under on how long it takes for the White Sox to fall under .500? I give it four days.
Anthony Franco
3:21
Ha my brother and I were joking about the inverse of this yesterday. Will the Angels get above .500 after the Opening Day loss? Halos might need to win the next two to make that happen
3:22
I'll give the White Sox until the Detroit series next weekend. Win one more against the Angels and take one of the first two against Minnesota and they're 3-3 heading into that one
Jesse
3:22
Is it just me or does it seem like there won't be a ton of starting pitching available at the trade deadline unless some teams are surprise sellers? Seems like most likely sellers have already moved their potential rotation trade candidates.
Anthony Franco
3:24
Alcantara's going to move. Could be a pretty good rotation market but yeah, it'll take some teams that expect to compete dropping out. Padres (Cease/King) and D-Backs (Gallen/Kelly) are the big ones. Jays could be more willing to deal a veteran starter if they struggle again. Cardinals' weird unwillingness to move Fedde probably changes at the deadline
walterj23
3:24
How does the Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton project to be a middle of the rotation or back end of the rotation ?
Anthony Franco
3:27
I think he has the stuff to be a mid-rotation guy but  the command probably keeps him a little below that and might push him to the bullpen
Embarrassment
3:27
Worst team in baseball: Rockies, Angels, White Sox?
Anthony Franco
3:28
I'll go White Sox, Miami, Angels, Colorado from the bottom
Joe
3:28
What could the Padres get for Eguy Rosario?
Anthony Franco
3:29
Cash or a player in Low-A who you've never heard of
3:30
The out-of-options status limits the flexibility for every team and that he's more of a 3B/2B type than a true shortstop makes him a tough guy to carry in a utility role
Chris
3:31
It's only one game, but did anything from yesterday's opening day stand out to you as perhaps an indication of things to come the rest of the season? I'm biased because I'm a Nats fan, but I was impressed with Gore's performance against a good Phillies lineup.
GBS42
3:31
Mackenzie Gore is on his way to a Cy Young, right? No doubt he'll maintain his 13 Ks in 6 IP pace.
Steve
3:31
Chances MacKenzie Gore becomes that ace pitcher?
Anthony Franco
3:33
Gore was disgusting yesterday obviously. Tough one for the bullpen to give away. Still think he's going to end up more in the high-end #3 bucket (Jesús Luzardo range), but he's the one guy in that rotation where you can see the path to being more than that
Unqualified Reds Armchair GM
3:33
Why in the love for all that is holy, would Tito run Gibaut out as closer?!
Anthony Franco
3:35
Weird one. I think they win if Santillan goes two innings but it's the first of 162 so I get it. Tito's got a hell of a track record with bullpen management
Jeff
3:36
What's up with D Robertson being without a team?  Is he just asking for too much $$?  He clearly still has it based on last year's results, though I worry about returning in-season like Kimbrel and Montgomery and falling apart.
Anthony Franco
3:37
Could be any number of things. Asking price is most likely but he's played 16 years and is about to turn 40 so maybe he's looking at specific fits from a competitive and/or geographical perspective
3:38
He was certainly still capable of pitching at a high level last year so it's not like he wouldn't have found interest
