The player has to clear waivers first -- every other team gets a chance to take on their Rule 5 status before they're offered back to the original team -- but trades after that aren't too uncommon
5:00
Can't think of an example off the top of my head but usually you'll see a player or two per year who get traded back to the team that drafted them for cash or a minor prospect after their Rule 5 status is over. It's usually a mutual recognition between the clubs that the second team likes the player more than the original team did
I think Sabol's just going to make the Giants roster though. They seem to love him

Can matt mervis still make the roster as a 1b or dh? Especially if Hosmer struggles in spring training
Anthony Franco
5:02
Hoyer has already said Hosmer's the first baseman against RHP, full stop. I think there's a path for Mervis at DH in light of the Suzuki injury though. If Trey Mancini's going to right field to start the season, DH looks like some combination of the Christopher Morel, Edwin Rios and Patrick Wisdom third base group
5:03
Mervis could get into that mix, and it'd be nice to give him some early AB's to see if he can just take over first base if Hosmer's not hitting come mid-May or something

Who do you think is the favorite to win the WBC?
Anthony Franco
5:05
Talked about this last week but I'm not following the WBC all that closely. The Dominican Republic seems really good though

With changing metrics, legal issues in the country, will cannabis be allowed?  Natural health.

I believe this already happened a few years ago

What did you think about the Braves financial results. Any idea how much they paid into the revenue sharing program? How much of the depreciation was due to depreciating players?
Anthony Franco
5:10
No clue how much they paid in revenue sharing. The report said only that it was up relative to 2021. Nothing super surprising in that report as far as I can tell. They didn't do as well as they did the year before, which is obvious because they didn't go to the World Series. Seems like they mostly came out fine after accounting for the Battery mixed use development but it's not surprising they didn't make many major changes to the player payroll this winter

Where can I find Velo and pitch mix data on spring games?
Anthony Franco
5:12
I don't know if there's anywhere great to sort through a full spreadsheet of the league but Brooks Baseball has data on individual pitchers

Do see Alek Thomas as the DBacks center fielder of the next several years?
Anthony Franco
5:14
Yeah I think he's the guy, at least until Druw Jones is on the doorstep of MLB readiness. Still a fan of Thomas given the minor league production, glove and contact skills

Todays player has to adjust to a minumum of 3 positions.  The 1 position player is not to be soon.
Anthony Franco
5:15
We're almost there already. The shift ban could accelerate it even more by placing a premium on infield range
5:16
There are still going to be players who aren't athletic enough to play more than one position (mostly catchers and first basemen who can't really run) but anyone who's athletic enough to handle an up-the-middle spot, at least off the bench, is already getting looks at four or five different positions

Will the old bases be donated to a less fortunate league?
Anthony Franco
5:18
Haha this is a good question. I'd guess they're just going in a warehouse somewhere but I have no idea

What team would be the most interesting to fall out of contention and suddenly have a trade-deadline fire sale?
Anthony Franco
5:20
White Sox could reach a really interesting inflection point if they're out of it this summer. Would be interesting to see what Minnesota does if they underperform again. The Giants have a lot of veteran players they could subtract at the deadline
5:22
Maximum chaos would be if a team like San Diego is way out of it. Hard to see that happening obviously, but it'd be ironic to hear Juan Soto trade chatter for a second consecutive season if they're shockingly terrible

When/if the A's get a new stadium, will they put money back into the team and increase the payroll?  I really doubt it myself.
Anthony Franco
5:23
They'll have to do more than they have in recent years but it's hard for me to see them jumping past the 20-25 range league-wide
Top Free Agents
5:23
Which uniform are these top free agents wearing on April 1st? Gary Sanchez, Miguel Sano, Jose Iglesias, and Jurickson Profar
Anthony Franco
5:23
I'll conclude with some random free agent stabs
Sanchez: Detroit
Sano: Miami
5:24
Iglesias: Colorado
Profar: Whoever loses their left fielder to injury in two weeks

Have a good weekend everyone! Thanks for all the questions and the support of the site. We'll do it again next week
