Not so much that they got old as they declined to bolster their rotation depth and it's killing them right now. It'll improve when they get Verlander back but it's a competitive division and they're digging themselves a hole early
I'll stick with the Astros finishing higher than the Mariners but don't feel great about it

On Brown specifically, the stuff seems fine. Not time to bury his career or anything, but there's obviously some level of concern when a young pitcher gives up 11 hits in an inning. I thought this would be a breakout year for him, and while it still might be, it's hard to draw up a worse first few weeks

thoughts on  Rojas with the Phillies (cf)?  I know he’s trying a new swing and the leash appears long..what does your crystal ball say?

Seems like the glove is going to keep him in the lineup for a while but it's not great. A huge BABIP masked some of the plate discipline issues he had last year. His spring was terrible and he's off to a really bad start
5:03
He's 23 and never played in Triple-A before they called him up last year, so there should be growing pains, but I don't think everything with the new swing mechanics is going to fall into place and make him an above-average hitter
Basically hoping that he can get to like a .290 on-base and let the defense and baserunning drive the profile from the bottom of the order

Philly local media is going crazy over the Phillies not slugging
Sorry hit send too fast.  13 games in should the Phillies be worried? They always start slow.

Not worried about the team as a whole, no. They're 7-6 despite the offense struggling and Nola having a tough start to the year. They'll come around and it's not like they're dug themselves a hole to pull out from

Most surprising first 2-3 starts by a SP this season?  And whoever it is, can they maintain it?

That's a good one. I'd probably go with Garrett Crochet. Four runs with a 21:1 strikeout-to-walk in 18 innings. He's been good in all three starts and dominated against Atlanta
5:09
I have no idea how his body will hold up and how many innings the White Sox will let him go in his first season as a starter. But the stuff is electric and he might already be a top-end starter on a rate basis. The team has been truly terrible but Crochet's start is super encouraging

Thanks for the mega pod! Those are so much fun

Glad you enjoy them! They're a blast to record too. We've talked about trying to make them a more frequent occurrence. Not every week or anything, but more often than once in six months
5:11
They're a bit of a hassle from a scheduling perspective. Tim doesn't always have weekday availability and having each of Steve, Darragh and myself recording means we need one of Mark, Leo or Nick to be available to manage the site for a couple hours, but we all really like doing them

That's all the questions this week. Thanks all for continuing to support the site and hanging out every Friday!
As always, feel free to throw stuff at me on X throughout the week. Talk to you all again next Friday. Have a great weekend!
