It's another corner outfield dart throw in the Edward Olivares/BDLC mold. Probably won't pan out but there was no acquisition cost and they're playing Tommy Pham everyday in a corner right now

...Arizona. I swear I had that in the question at one point. Not sure when I edited it to delete it... Oops! TGIF

Haha this would've been my guess!

Feels like they're hitting their limit, which is part of the reason they extended/restructured Marte to create some space at the deadline, but they've really pushed since the post-pandemic cuts. Probably won't sustain top 10 levels, and maybe it's tied a little bit to their effort to get public funding for the Chase Field renovations, but I can't see them dramatically slashing to drop back into the bottom third of the league anytime soon

Can we dare be hopeful in 2025? Or have we just been beating up on bad teams and ones not ready for the season?
Anthony Franco

I think it's the latter, sorry

Please explain "quad-A" to the uninitiated. I assume it is a 2X2 matrix. What tra ethe axis/
Anthony Franco
4:04
A hitter who performs well in Triple-A but doesn't translate against MLB pitching, usually because of strikeout/defensive limitations
4:05
A lot of those types will bounce around for a while and then mash for a few seasons in Japan or Korea

is Jack Leiter for real this year? Hes been electric in his first two starts.
Anthony Franco
4:08
Uptick to an already excellent fastball, the slider has been unhittable. I'm not ready to buy into the command yet, which has been the red flag on Leiter for years, but his first couple starts couldn't have been more encouraging

Is there anything to be read into the Braves acquiring Jason Daly? Potential moves/trades with their other catchers for help elsewhere?
Anthony Franco

Depth add in case they lose Tromp on waivers if they decide to keep Baldwin up when Murphy returns

Do players that miss the entire year due to injury or retire early (ex prince fielder) have their salaries count against the luxury tax payroll. I know there is insurance in some cases but not sure how it all works. Just wondering if teams get any payroll flexibility when a player is out for an extended period of time
Anthony Franco
4:09
Still counts in full against the luxury tax

Mitch Garver… what has happened?
Anthony Franco
4:12
He's 34 and his body has been through hell over his career, I guess. I liked the signing at the time and thought he'd continue to mash for two years but yeah, not looking great
Merrill Madness
4:12
I know he’s still at least a year away but should the Padres consider moving De Vries to left field to complete their shortstop outfield? Cronenworth is signed through 2030 and Bogaerts through 2033.
Anthony Franco
4:13
They already didn't really want Bogaerts playing shortstop. Arraez is a FA next offseason. Cronenworth probably goes back to first, Xander back to second

The offseason had a lot of talk about the Dodgers spending and most of the articles by industry types I saw were basically the Dodgers are the pinnacle and small market teams could easily afford to up their spending, the As, Pirates and Marlins of the world are the bad guys. So my question is, how mad should I be at my team? While I am sure Attanasio could have paid the Adames extension out of his pocket, isn't that still asking him to operate in a different way than the big markets? Just seems like an easy out to blame the small markets rather than overhaul the rules. Thanks and sorry for the essay question!

I'd appreciate that the front office has a pretty good track record of succeeding despite the budget, I guess. They've stretched occasionally, most notably on the Yelich extension, and they were pretty well positioned to replace Willy with Ortiz and Turang in house.

Could they spend more? Probably, but they're never going to compete with the top teams on most free agents. I think it's fair as a fan of a small-market team to want more investment from Attanasio and also wish that the league had more robust revenue sharing that reduced that discrepancy

I need to run here. Sorry if I didn't get to your question. Feel free to throw it at me on X @affranco10 and I'll get back to you this weekend

Thanks to all of you for supporting the site! We'll do the usual two subscriber chats next week. Steve's off again on Monday. Not sure yet whether he'll move his to Wednesday or if I'll take his Monday time slot and he'll do the Friday one
In any case, I'll do this again at some point next week. Have a great weekend!
