We'll see if that happens. Diamond's obviously doing what they can to stay afloat with that Amazon partnership. If Diamond doesn't go under, there's nothing MLB can really do about blackouts. Just a lose-lose situation for fans

Should Nido (for defense) be the backup on the Mets, once Alvarez returns?  Thank you
Anthony Franco
3:38
Probably. Agree that Nido's a superior defender to Narváez and it's not like the latter is contributing offensively at all. Not enthused about either player, though, and I think they'll probably try to add a backup catcher before the deadline

3:38
The Reds are not good against lefties. Are there any right handed bats that are currently available or that will be available soon?  Would the Angels trade Rengifo?  If so, what do you think it would take to get him?
Anthony Franco
3:42
Angels should be willing to deal Rengifo. Seems like they're going to take it all the way to the deadline to see if they can compete but that feels like wishful thinking. Because of the limited defensive skillset, I don't think he'd cost more than a couple mid-level prospects
3:43
Tougher to get anyone notable sooner. Maybe Brent Rooker or a Tommy Pham reunion. Guess the Marlins could move Bryan De La Cruz too, but he's been a reverse split guy for his career
Snell
3:43
How much earning power did I lose myself when I overvalued 2 solid seasons?
Anthony Franco
3:44
I disagree with the "solid" characterization. He was basically unhittable for four months en route to a resounding Cy Young win last year
3:47
But to the main question, he probably risked something like $50MM. We know the Yankees put out 6/150. If we assume that's the highest that was available last year, then he took $88MM less to get the 2/62 from the Giants. Even if he doesn't pitch well enough to opt out next winter, he'll probably be able to put together another $40MM over the following four years. That's basically Seth Lugo or Michael Wacha money
3:48
That's far less preferable to the 6/150 obviously, but given the upside of taking another swing at the market next year after the 200+ wasn't there for him, it's an understandable gamble IMO

3:48
Do you think Mike Elias is making a mistake by hoarding his prospects? He can’t play them all, but he seems really reluctant to trade, the burnes acquisition notwithstanding.
Anthony Franco
3:49
We'll see how the deadline plays out. He did move Ortiz and Hall, as you mentioned, and there's still time to make some kind of consolidation trade this summer or next offseason
3:52
They probably waited too long to get anything of note for Kyle Stowers, and they might have to move Connor Norby at some point, but I don't think they're regretting not trading someone like Kjerstad yet. They've got Santander as an impending FA and Mullins and Hays hitting the market two years from now. Still time to work Kjerstad and Mayo in

3:52
Paul Skeens will start tomorrow.  Nick Gonzales is being recalled.  I feel the Pirates now need another bat at either the outfield or 1st base. Who might be available?
Anthony Franco
3:55
Not expecting Pittsburgh to jump the trade market this summer but I agree that first base is a pretty significant weakness. Guess they could try for someone like Rooker but the likelier outcome is that they do what Boston did after Casas/Yoshida went down and go get the Garrett Cooper and Dom Smith types from DFA limbo
RAGBRAI
3:55
Gasser get more than one start?
Anthony Franco
3:56
He should. I find it hard to believe he wouldn't be better than Tobias Myers right away
Dave
3:56
It appears LAD is one of leaders to sign Roki Sasaki for 2025. I know they are limited to giving their intl bonus pool. Is there any limit on starting salary given Roku? Also would their be a posting given to the
Anthony Franco
3:58
If he comes over before he turns 25, he gets the signing bonus and then starts on the league minimum salary like any pre-arbitration player called up from the minors
4:00
There's some nebulous area at which the Dodgers could sign him to an extension, but they couldn't do it right away -- MLB would void an obvious circumvention of the bonus pool limits -- and Sasaki wouldn't have any way to force the team's hand if they tried to set up some kind of unwritten understanding about circling back a year or two down the line

Did Will Smiths $14 million AAV seem a little low to you?  Could he have done better as a free agent?
Anthony Franco
4:02
Definitely light but that was by design so they could stretch it over 10 years to reduce the tax hit. He'd have gotten more as a free agent but he basically signed away his entire career to stay in L.A., so he's clearly happy there
Fedde Up
4:02
What kind of return could the ChiSox get for Fedde, considering he's controlled thru 2025 at a relatively cheap rate?
Rangers13
4:02
With the Rangers desperately in need of pitching in the rotation and the bullpen, I think they should ask CWS about FEdde and Kopech. What would the White Sox for each one or in a combo deal?
Anthony Franco
4:03
Guessing they'll hold Fedde all the way to the deadline to let him continue building his track record. If he's still pitching like a #4 starter at that point, they should be able to get a fringe Top 100 type given the affordable contract that you mentioned
4:04
Kopech doesn't have much value at this point. He probably returns a couple lottery ticket prospects from the back third of an organizational top 30
4:05
Rookie ball players with a 15% chance to be a regular in six years, something like that
Ryan
4:05
Let's play the "what if" game. Could you see a situation the Mariners bring back Paul Sewald and Eugenio Suarez in free agency? Sewald with Munoz, Santos, Speir and hopefully Brash (fearing the worst on Brash) is a serious bullpen. Geno back to platoon with Rojas and be a huge clubhouse piece.
Anthony Franco
4:08
I think they're done with Geno. They decided (correctly in my view) that he's pretty much done as an everyday player. Guess he could still hold some value in a short side platoon role but that's probably better suited in a more favorable hitter's park where the power can play a little bit
Sewald, I could kind of see, but they've also been so good at developing relief pitching that they haven't needed to dip into free agency all that much
For Love of the Game
4:09
With all the Tigers' hitting struggles, when do they call up Justyn-Henry Malloy?  I know he's defensively limited and likely just a DH, but the bar is pretty low in Motown if you can hit!
J-Hen
4:09
When should the tigers call up Malloy or Jung?
Anthony Franco
4:10
It's a weird spot for Malloy because the corner outfield/DH are about the only places where Detroit is getting any offense. He doesn't have anything else to prove against Triple-A pitching, but it probably takes an IL stint to one of Carpener, Greene or Canha to get him ABs
4:12
Jung's such a tough call. He's striking out enough in Toledo that he'll probably struggle early on, but we've gotta be close to the point where they send Keith down for some kind of reset anyway
FA SPs
4:12
Rank these available SPs: Hill, Boyd, Mad Bum, Greinke
Anthony Franco
4:12
Do I have to?
4:13
I guess I'd go Boyd, Hill, Greinke, Bumgarner. Wouldn't want to give any of them a major league deal
Bogeys new par for the course?
4:13
Is Bogaert ever going to return to the hitter he was?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Yeah it's still too early for me to believe that he completely lost his power
Alright, I have to wrap things here
