That's of course true of pretty much every team though. They're really good

Might there be any catchers in Independent Ball that the Angels might be looking at to give them some depth?
Anthony Franco
3:58
Don't have to go to independent ball. They almost signed Gary Sánchez, then added Meibrys Viloria on a minor league deal. I imagine Viloria will replace Chris Okey as the backup catcher before long

Toronto's Adam Kloffenstein seems to have returned to his former prospect glory. Do you think he cracks the bigs next year?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Yeah the Double-A performance has been really good. Could see him at least as a spot starter in 2024, sure

I am owed nearly $30M through 2025 season but things haven't started well for me in '23- (OPS+=28, .153/.231/.220).  Will I be DFA this season? or can Cashman send me elsewhere?
Anthony Franco
4:01
They're not going to be able to move him. He's probably got until mid-July before they upgrade via trade to figure it out or he gets DFA
Welp, the Rays just lost Rasmussen for two-plus months to a flexor strain. That's unfortunate timing
Turned down how much
4:02
Soto turned down 400 million for the Nats, and now if he ended the season at current pace (April and May not just last week or two) might be looking at eight years 240 million with an opt-out after every even numbered years, seem right?
Anthony Franco
4:02
He's not a free agent until after 2024, so there's plenty of time. If he plays at this pace through the end of next season, I think he's looking at Devers type money (plus a small boost for inflation)
4:03
I'd still peg him over $300MM, although I don't think he'd get the chance to opt out after two years in that scenario

As I write this of course, Belt and Biggio have had a decent week. That said, Spencer Horwitz is intriguing. What would it take for the jays to give him a look?
Separately, meant to tag this onto my last note, was intrigued by your win total predictions for the AL East. 94 is the Jays over/under number. I have the under. All it says is that it is a good bet, i.e. could go either way
Anthony Franco
4:04
Ha, I didn't know that 94 was the O/U. Guess I'm in line with Vegas on the Jays
4:06
On Horwitz, I think you're basically waiting on a Belt injury. He's playing really well in Triple-A but they're not going to bump Belt from the roster right now and Horwitz is only playing first in the minors
Seems like an intriguing bat but the lack of defensive flexibility makes him a tough fit on this roster

4:06
Luis Patino looks like he'll be a reliever from now on, doesn't he?
Anthony Franco
4:07
Yeah it's looking that way. I thought Patino was going to be electric but the strike-throwing just hasn't come along

Anthony --- Here a 5 early surprises, rank them 1-5 in order of most surprising:  1) Rays 30-9;  2) Yankees in last place;

I was waiting for Bill to send the rest of the surprises and they never came!

I am going to try again as nobody has so far answered me. When will MLB do something with the antics of these umpired. Main reference is to the Pirates game when the umpire clearly dropped the F-Bombs.
Anthony Franco
4:08
Sorry, last week's chat was a struggle because I was sick
4:09
I don't know that I agree with your premise that an umpire mixing in some colorful language is a problem though. Feels like that happens all the time and players/coaches are cool with it. It's not like they don't dish it right back out
4:10
That's all we've got today and I have to fill in our post about Rasmussen's injury
Thanks for all the questions and for supporting the site generally! I'm on Twitter if you want to hit me with anything else during the week. We'll do this again next Friday. Have a great weekend!
