Hey everybody, hope you've all had a great week!
3:30
Going to have to move a little more quickly than usual today since I have to run right at 4:00, but I'll see if I can get through everything
Let's get rolling
Kevin J
3:30
Are the Rangers going to buy or sell, what about the glut of infielders in the minors, why hold onto so many.
Anthony Franco
3:31
Infield depth like that is fine, since you can gradually start kicking guys to the corner outfield or DH if a bunch of them hit. Some just won't pan out, like Willie Calhoun or Nick Solak seem to have
3:32
They'll be one of a few teams in the hybrid buy/sell position. Move the impending free agents like Martin Perez while still being open to adding talent controllable beyond this year
Bert
3:32
Mets. Over/Under 100 wins
Anthony Franco
3:33
Slight under
Duffy Scliff
3:33
The Rays are starting to slip…what can/should they do to bolster their lineup for a second half run?
Anthony Franco
3:34
They'll probably poke around for outfield help, make a ton of sense for Willson Contreras too
3:35
Just going to have to wait on Lowe/Franco to come back in the middle infield, but Margot's not back anytime soon and relying on Harold Ramírez, Brett Phillips or Luke Raley isn't going to work long-term
A's Fan
3:35
If someone offered Oakland two consensus, Top 100 prospects for Montas right now do they close the deal? And who is the team willing to make that deal with the A's?
Anthony Franco
3:37
Yeah that'd do it, but I think it's probably one consensus top prospect and a few good but not elite secondary pieces. Twins/Dodgers seem like the teams most likely to make that kind of move, Rays could be a dark horse given their organizational depth
EWitkows
3:37
Is McCutchen next to get cut? -0.2 War and not hitting for power. Seems like a spot the Brewers could improve on quite a bit.
Anthony Franco
3:38
Yeah I think that could be the case fairly soon. He's not even hitting lefties, which was the whole point of bringing him in
SteveM
3:38
Twins trade Jose Miranda for________?
Anthony Franco
3:39
It's certainly not a given they'll trade him, but he could be one of the guys that goes in a deal for a Montas/Castillo type starter
Nomahhhhh
3:39
For the love of god, can the Red Sox please pick up a closer? I hold my breath every time they go to the bullpen in a high leverage situation
Anthony Franco
3:40
I don't know they'll need a "closer" per se, since Houck should be fine in that role. But they'll add at least one, probably two, high-leverage arms before the deadline
Cole Hammels
3:40
I’m coming back! Who should take a look at me next year?
Anthony Franco
3:41
He's just going to get a minor league deal if he's healthy enough to showcase. Any team really fits for adding that kind of depth arm
Hang on, Astros DFA Dillon Thomas
Let me get that on the site real quick
Aaron boone
3:44
Recently, he said that when Chapman comes back he’s going to go to a closer by committee role and keep using Holmes when he’s needed the most instead of just whenever the 9th inning comes. Doesn’t this seem like the better option and shouldn’t everyone be doing it?
sorry, cut of my question, if the top of the order is coming up in the 8th, shouldn’t all teams want to use their best guy then, instead of waiting for the 9th to use their best pitcher?
Anthony Franco
3:44
Yeah that's the better way of doing it and most teams have gone in that direction over the last 5-10 years
3:45
The exceptions, by and large, are the teams that have a "star closer" like Chapman, Jansen, Kimbrel
3:46
Those guys have decade-long track records in the ninth inning, and if they want to stay in that role, then it's probably better not to mess with their routine. But most managers love the flexibility to just use their best arms in the highest-leverage situations, and Holmes' emergence allows Boone to do that
Nomahhhhh
3:46
Houck's been solid, but yeah I was thinking more of someone with closing experience. I just don't think Houck has had enough experience in that role yet for me to feel totally relaxed about that as the only real option. Also, for what its worth, if the playoffs started today, the Red Sox would be playing a playoff game in Toronto, and Houck would not be there because he is unvaccinated...
Anthony Franco
3:47
Yeah that's fair. I don't know that closing experience would be a prerequisite but we're on the same page they need more options for Cora regardless

What’s up with playing hicks in left and judge in center? Their positions should be flip flopped and if judge was always the preferred option in center, shouldn’t the yanks have gone out and acquired a corner outfielder?
Anthony Franco
3:48
I don't actually know why they started doing this. Maybe they think it'll keep Hicks healthier?
It's working fine though, I don't think they need to replace Hicks just because he's playing left now
Joey
3:48
Is there a website that I can look to where there is throwing velocity listed? For position players, that is.
Anthony Franco
3:49
No, it's not publicly available. MLB Savant has all that stuff, which is why it's sometimes selectively released for things like that Oneil Cruz throw the other day, but they've kept it proprietary for some reason
Jose iglesias
3:49
He’s an inexpensive SHORTSTOP with a wrc+ on 91. Why is he not talked about more as a trade chip when he seems super valuable?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Defensive metrics have been absolutely awful the last two years. Bizarre since he was a plus defender for the longest time, but it got bad enough the Angels just cut him last August
3:51
He's been fine offensively this year but his entire game is built around singles. It's not an exciting profile unless you still think he's an elite defender and the metrics are just wrong
Anthony rizzo
3:51
I have some defensive hardware to my name and have long been regarded as a plus defender. But, this season I’ve been straight up terrible in the field and the worst defender on the Yankees by far. What changed?
Anthony Franco
3:52
I'd guess it's some combination of a blip plus age taking its toll on his lateral quickness
