Hey all, hope you're doing well!
2:58
Glad to be back after Darragh stepped in last week, let's get going
Cards Fan
2:58
Saw a trade proposal of TEX David Robertson to the Cardinals for Dylan Carlson?  Think that's enough for the Cards to get Robertson?  I'm a Cardinals' fan and would love that trade, but I have my doubts it would be enough for TEX.  Thanks!
Anthony Franco
3:00
I do not think that's enough for D-Rob. Guess I can vaguely see the logic in allowing the Rangers to add an MLB-ready piece if they try to thread the needle of selling while not completely giving up on '24
3:01
But I'd rather have Leody Taveras in CF than Carlson, who is trending towards a non-tender. Trade value's negligible at this point
Dallas
3:01
Am I insane to think the Mets should trade Severino? His injury history still worries me but I also think the Mets could get something good for return. Obviously we need more relief pitching but another bat would be nice as well
Anthony Franco
3:02
Not insane. I don't think they'll do it, but there's an argument that they've got sufficient rotation depth and would be better served flipping a starter for a controllable piece that can impact some other part of the roster

3:02
Who can the Mets get to prop up the bullpen?
Anthony Franco
3:05
Don't know that I'd want to shoot at the top of the market for an Estévez or Scott rental (or Miller as a controllable piece) given the acquisition cost. But there are a lot of mid-level guys that we listed on the Top 50 thing that would fit there. Chafin, McFarland, or Scott Alexander probably the make most sense because they could really use left-handed help after the Raley injury

3:05
Chances the Rays trade Paredes and backfill him with Caminero?
Anthony Franco
3:07
I'd guess about 10%? Would've been an easier sell if Caminero hadn't gotten hurt a couple times this year already. He should be back before the deadline and doesn't have much more to prove in Durham, but you can't expect any rookie to immediately perform at the level Paredes has over the past two seasons
Hits Like Rays
3:07
I am seeing a lot of calls for the Rays to start trading their MLB players for younger and more controllable talent.  But they already have a lot of that controllable talent on their MLB roster and even more in the minor leagues.  So, my question is: since the Rays are reasonably close to a Wild Card now, shouldn't they just "go for it" instead of trying to stockpile even more young talent?  Is there a point where stockpiling becomes overkill?
Anthony Franco
3:08
Related question so I'll tie it in
3:10
Moving Paredes would be a tough sell but I think they should still be open to dealing from the rotation. I get how the constant churn approach could be really frustrating to the fanbase, but there's a limited window where they can move away from stockpiling before they lose the ability to be perpetually competitive with the payrolls they run
3:12
I don't think the '24 Rays are a particularly good team and would still consider them a longer shot to make the playoffs. But there might not be a massive downgrade from an Eflin to a returning Jeffrey Springs, and this would be the best opportunity to cash Eflin in for meaningful prospect talent

Orioles and Yankees fans are all crying doom and despair about recent lousy play. Each group, for instance, anticipates a sweep this weekend by the opposition. Which pessimistic fanbase is more correct about the rest of the season?
Anthony Franco
3:12
I have more concerns about the Yankees' lineup depth and bullpen
3:13
Don't think either fanbase should panic but I probably feel better about Baltimore than any other team in the American League, recent skid notwithstanding. It happens
Arizona
3:14
If Arizona were to look at trading Jake McCarthy (either to buy or sell), what would be a possible return? He's not really a starting caliber player, but he's also very, very good.
Anthony Franco
3:15
Yeah that makes it pretty tough to line up on value, I think. The D-Backs would need another team that values McCarthy as an average or better regular to make it worthwhile to move him. It's not like they're under any contractual pressure
3:17
Not a ton of comps for players like that moving as a result. Best one is probably when the Angels traded Brandon Marsh for Logan O'Hoppe, who was a top 50-100 caliber prospect but blocked at catcher in Philly by Realmuto. Marsh was younger than McCarthy is now and a better fit in CF
3:19
Tough balance to strike. I doubt the D-Backs would move McCarthy if they didn't think they were getting a Top 100 caliber prospect back, but I doubt other teams are putting that kind of prospect on the table for a player who's probably a high-end fourth outfielder, as you said

What do you make of Detroit's situation?  They have won 6 out of 7, including 3 from Cleveland.  Do you buy them as WC contenders?  Or, should they still look to move Jack, Gio, Canha, and anyone not named Greene or Skubal?

How does the Tigers' resurgence over the past week and suddenly improved offense, not to mention the uncertainty about his back, affect the chances they keep Flaherty and take the QO draft pick?
Anthony Franco
3:20
Got a bunch of Tigers-related questions. I'll start with these
3:22
Recent play hasn't moved them off seller status for me. I was optimistic about them coming into the year but the offense just hasn't been reliable enough. Really tough stretch of games coming up (Dodgers, @ Jays, @ Guardians, Twins) leading into the deadline. They're four under .500 right now and I'd be really surprised  if they were able to get back to even by July 30
3:23
All of which is to say that I still expect Flaherty to move. Unless the back sends him to the IL through the deadline (no indication that's on the table), they should get a prospect package that's a fair bit better than a pick after the first round
3:24
Wouldn't go so far as to say they should trade anyone not named Greene or Skubal. Keith's not going anywhere, Olson's a keeper, etc. But I would still look to move the rentals unless they win like 10 of their next 12
Steve
3:24
What would an overwhelming offer to the Tigers for Skubal look like?
Lolich
3:24
Skubal is doing some crazy things. Any chance Scott backs a money truck up this off-season for an extension?
Anthony Franco
3:26
On Skubal specifically, the ask should be so high that he's basically untouchable in practice. Three top 50 caliber prospects or productive young big leaguers as a starting point
3:27
Steve mentioned the first Soto deal as a possible precedent in the Top 50 yesterday. I don't think the Tigers would get that much, but guys like José Berríos and Luis Castillo netted two Top 50 caliber types with one fewer year of control. They weren't as good as Skubal is now
I'd be really surprised if he signs an extension
Diamond Dan
3:27
What do you think the Jays could get for a struggling Bichette? He looks miserable & likely moved sooner than later (off-season my guess). Who’s the best fit as trading partner?
Anthony Franco
3:28
Dodgers seem like the cleanest fit, Giants maybe. I still take Atkins at his word that he's not moving this summer, but an offseason trade could happen if Toronto makes a change in the front office
3:30
Still wouldn't do it without a clear Top 100 type as a headliner. He's had a terrible year but there's no reason to sell low on a potential franchise shortstop unless they're waving the white flag on '25 too

Is Marco Luciano a bust or headed that way? Though I'm not sure how much the Giants can get out of the Brett Wisely/Tyler Fitzgerald platoon. Imo, the Giants should be actively looking for a shortstop either through trade or free agency.
Anthony Franco
3:31
Don't want to write him off entirely but the strikeouts are concerning and I don't think he's a shortstop
3:32
Still holding out hope that Luciano could be a solid regular at second base or in the corner outfield, but I'm with you that the Giants need a better long-term answer at shortstop. Probably not happening this summer but we should get a lot of "Giants interested in Adames, Kim" articles next winter

Offense is down throughout mlb. Do you think baseball is messing with the ball again or is it something else?
