Do you think the Brave’s offense will ever realize their potential and perhaps catch the Phils? Aside from a few good pitchers this team looks lost, why?
Anthony Franco
4:09
Phillies are probably too far gone. Making up 9.5 games on almost anybody is really hard and Philly's not showing any signs of slowing down
4:11
On Atlanta specifically, I'll reserve judgment until I see what they do with the outfield at the deadline. Riley has come around and I remain optimistic on Olson/Murphy to follow suit. But it's clearly a patchwork outfield right now and they're probably going to have to live without much from Arcia at SS
O’s/sox
4:12
Who does it take from the O’s system to get chrochet?  Mayo?
Coop
4:12
I don't think the Sox will move Crochet because I can't see them getting value given the potential need to shut him down or at least slow his roll a bit in the 2nd half. Do you buy that ir dobyou feel he's as good as gone? I mean, if you spent the farm to get him, would you risk his arm by letting him go full out the rest if the year?
Anthony Franco
4:13
Yeah I think the upside with Crochet is tantalizing enough that someone will meet the Sox's ask, injury risk be damned. Baltimore has enough high-end talent to get it done without Mayo specifically, but it'd be that caliber of prospect to start the package
Ryan Red-Leg
4:13
What would the Reds have to give up to get Rooker and Chisholm?  Trading for those 2 would make a lot of sense for them since they are both controllable for 2+ years.
Anthony Franco
4:17
They could probably get both those guys without a Lowder or Alfredo Duno but they'd need to give up a lot of talent from the next tier or two down
AJ
4:17
Just trying to figure out what the Jays trying to do with KK. I assume they aren't going to outright him because they'd still be on the hook for his salary. This is an attempt to get someone to pick up his salary so that in conjunction with other moves they will attempt to shed approx. $10 million to get under the luxury tax. Sound right?
Anthony Franco
4:18
It wouldn't shed all $10.5MM from the CBT ledger, only the approximately $4.5MM left
4:19
Ah sorry, misread your question. In conjunction with other moves they're probably trying to drop the $10MM to get under the CBT, yeah
4:20
It's a long shot though. Likelier than not that Kiermaier goes unclaimed and they just keep him. Can't imagine they're thrilled that someone leaked that Kiermaier was out there -- teams don't need to inform the player that he's on waivers, and the Jays probably wouldn't have if Joel Sherman hadn't reported it -- but that's really the only downside
4:21
If no one takes the money, they just move on as if nothing happened

Thank you as always for these chats! Has there ever been another pitcher, in the modern era, to begin his career like Skenes? I believe we are watching someone very special.
Anthony Franco
4:24
No precedent that I can think of for a pitcher doing this within one year of being drafted. Strasburg and Cole were good early on but not arguable top 5 pitchers in MLB right away
4:26
Maybe the closest recent comp is José Fernández? First-round pick out of high school in 2011, arguably the best pitching prospect in baseball the year after
4:27
Debuted in 2013 and had a 2.19 ERA to win Rookie of the Year and finish third in Cy Young balloting at age 20
Rob
4:28
Skenes comparison=Kerry Wood
Anthony Franco
4:29
Yeah I don't mind this one. Wood's rookie year was before my time but he's a good pick for a top pitching prospect who had a phenomenal rookie season

Tarik the front runner for the Cy Young in your book?  Give me some names to watch if it isn't him, please.
Anthony Franco
4:32
Skubal for me but Burnes, Houck or Ragans all have arguments. Crochet's certainly in there right now but between the innings question and potential for a trade to the NL, he's probably behind those guys in likelihood to win the award

It took Gooden 2 years but he was coming out of high school.  25-5, 384Ks in 270 IP, 14 CG.  Then he destroyed NL hitters in 84
Anthony Franco
4:33
Yeah that's a great call. Gooden's numbers from the mid-late 80s are hilarious

I reject the notion that the Reds could get Rooker without giving up a Top 100 prospect. Rooker is a top 20 bat this year and the best available hitter on the Trade Market. The A's have no money committed in 2025, they can afford his Arb-1 salary.
Anthony Franco
4:37
They can certainly afford him. I get what you're saying but I also don't know that this is the kind of player teams want so bad that they're willing to deal from the absolute top of their system. No defensive value, huge power but the strikeouts are an issue. He's not going to keep up anything like a .377 average on balls in play
4:39
He's been really good this season, but he feels like a true talent 125 wRC+ guy to me. Plug and play guy in the middle of the lineup but someone who doesn't offer a well-rounded profile. And he's pushing 30, so it's not like the A's are going to get more for him next offseason or next summer than they would now
4:40
Alright we're well past 90 minutes so I have to wrap things up here
4:41
Thanks for all the questions and, of course, for your continued support of the site! This was a blast as always. Feel free to throw anything else at me on X throughout the week, especially if I didn't get to your question here
We'll do this again next Friday. Have a great weekend!
