A lot of hitters do this instinctively anyways but I'd be on board with giving them an actual appeal right. Never made logical sense that the catcher could force an appeal but the hitter couldn't

Where does Finnegan get traded, and do you think he fetches more than Harvey?
Anthony Franco
4:08
Picking specific destinations for reliever trades is really tough. There's no contender (except maybe Cleveland) that would surprise me if they traded for Finnegan. I guess give me Arizona?
4:09
I think Finnegan has slightly higher trade value than Harvey but I really like what the Nats got in the trade with K.C., so I'll say that Finnegan probably goes for a bit less
But that's only because they beat my expectation in the first trade

Hi Anthony, after all of the comments from Bo over the years, he is going to go to free agency and he just put an explanation on that when interviewed while playing the Giants stating "his first priority is to go to a winning team over money"... since he is counting the days even if they contend next year, trading Bo would be smarter now to get the most they can and go after someone like Willy Adames with Leo JImenez as back up while trying to sign Vlad... thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:11
While I get the argument, Adames is going to cost a lot more next season than the $16.5MM that Bichette will make and the Jays are going to need at least one starter and probably a complete overhaul of the bullpen
4:13
This is probably overthinking it unless the Jays think Bo's disappointing season is his new normal and they want to cash him in before his value completely tanks
I still expect him to bounce back so I'd hold him
Guardos
4:14
Do the Guardians go all in? Who’s the best fit?
Anthony Franco
4:15
Guards never really go all in. They'll probably add a back-end starter and a depth outfielder but I wouldn't expect huge splashes
4:18
They're one of those teams that tries to remain consistently competitive by not committing to specific contention windows. They made a bit of an exception with the August waiver claims last year because they knew Tito was on the way out, but they're typically focused on the long term organizationally

Can/should the Royals upgrade via trade by using guys on the major league roster who are underperforming but have potential?  Think Maikel Garcia, MJ Melendez, etc.
Anthony Franco
4:20
Probably past the point where Melendez has that kind of value. I'd be open to moving García, particularly since other teams could play him at shortstop where the lack of offense wouldn't be so glaring, but there's not a ton of infield talent out there to backfill for him. That feels like more of an offseason thing

Has Burleson done enough to establish himself as a core piece for STL? Likely to take over at 1B next year if they let Goldschmidt walk?
Anthony Franco
4:21
Yeah, I'm in. Ideally he and Walker could split first base and DH over the next couple seasons, but you have to feel more confident in Burleson's bat at this point
4:22
Obviously both those guys have corner outfield experience but I think they're better suited for first base once Goldy leaves

What kind of package would it take to get Roberts out of Chicago and into Cincinnati?
Gadzooks
4:23
If the Reds do buy, would Rooker be their primary target?
Ryan Red-leg
4:23
Any chance the Reds trade for Arozarena or Paredes?  What kind of return with the Rays expect for those 2 (not on the same trade)  Or do you think the Reds are more likely to make a smaller trade for someone like Kevin Pillar or even Lane Thomas?  What would they have to give up for someone like that?
Mikey D
4:23
Do the reds need to trade India?  His value is prolly at its peak and he is under contract for another year.  He will become a utility guy next year when McClain returns.  With a lack of middle infielders on the trade market what do you think India would fetch?
Anthony Franco
4:23
I'll grab these Reds questions in bulk
4:25
Hard to see an India trade happening while they're this close to the playoff mix. Maybe he becomes available if they have a terrible next week and it becomes clear they're going to miss the playoffs in '24, but I don't expect him to go
4:28
A Robert deal feels like it involves Lowder and one of McLain or Marte. I like the Rooker and Lane Thomas suggestions more so than a Pillar stopgap there

4:28
If San Fran falls out of it in the next 10 days, who could I sell?
Tommy
4:30
The Giants seem like an interesting case. They dont seem likely to make the playoffs and, with their SPs returning from IL, dont seem to have glaring holes besides SS, where theres pretty much nothing available. Does this make them likely to stand pat?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Conforto's the obvious one if they sell. There'd be interest in both Rogers relievers. Chapman's contract is tricky but they could try to float him out there. Could pay down some of the money for a mid-level prospect on Alex Cobb
4:32
None of those guys are bringing back huge returns, though, and I agree with Tommy that their biggest flaw is something they'll have a hard time fixing this summer (unless the Jays reverse course on Bo). It does feel like mostly a stand pat situation to me

With the lack of offensive talent available could we see teams acquire guys from AAA and instantly promote them (not necessarily all stud prospects like Mayo)? What hitters might be good targets for outside the box thinking like this?
Anthony Franco
4:36
This is a great question but I haven't looked into this enough to have a good answer. No one jumps out in a cursory look at the minor league leaderboards
4:38
Nick Loftin has had a good year in Triple-A. He's in the majors with K.C. now but in a depth role. Will Holland with the Twins used to be a decent prospect but he'd fallen off the radar because of strikeout issues. He was making a lot more contract in Triple-A this year. He's 26 and Rule 5 eligible
4:39
But he's been on the Triple-A injured list for the last couple weeks so I don't know his status

If MLB gets expanded to 32 teams. Can you see 8 divisions with each having 4 teams?
Anthony Franco
4:39
This is what I'd expect, yeah. Probably an east, north, south and west in each league like the NFL does

Chance that the Sox trade all 3 (Robert, Crochet and Fedde) this month?
Anthony Franco
4:40
Give me 35% on all three going. Feel pretty good about Crochet and Fedde moving, Robert seems like more of a toss-up
Alright I need to wrap things up here
4:42
Sorry if I didn't get to your question. The pre-deadline and Winter Meetings chats are usually the busiest and this one's no exception. You can throw stuff at me on X throughout the week if you'd like
4:43
Thank you all for hanging out and for continuing to support the site! Looking forward to our final pre-deadline chat next week. Have a great weekend everyone!
