Would it be reasonable for the Mets to add 2 more relievers even after the Soto trade? Or would just another setup 8th inning type do the trick for their bullpen going forward
Anthony Franco
3:32
Adding two more doesn't leave with much roster flexibility in terms of minor league options unless they're cutting bait on Raley. As is, bringing in one more veteran leaves them with Brazobán and Garrett as the only guys they can send down
3:34
I'd probably order the infielders Baty, Vientos, Mauricio, Acuña but I can see the argument for any order on the first three. Acuña would be a pretty clear fourth for me unless you really needed a shortstop and thought he could be a 70-grade defender there on a team that doesn't have Lindor

At the end of the day, do you see Cleveland making any moves?

I've seen a few articles connecting Stowers in a trade with Cleveland and as much as I would love to have him in the Cleveland OF I just can't see why Miami would do it?  Connect the dots for me here or am I on point?
Anthony Franco
3:35
Miami's not trading Stowers. Their beat people have been pretty unanimous on that one
3:36
Cleveland needs to add an outfielder. Mentioned catcher in the chat last week, feels like they could do something small there to upgrade on Naylor. I'd lean towards Clase staying but think there's like a 35% chance someone bowls them over with controllable rotation/outfield talent that they can't refuse
3:37
I'd be a lot more surprised if they dealt Kwan or Cade Smith

You often hear that teams looking to trade for a rental in their division don't bother cause the selling team wouldn't want to trade within their division.  Isn't it more likely, or sensible, that the acquiring team wouldn't want to give a prospect that may be on their rivals team for 6 years, or longer? What does the seller care about trading a rental to a rival while they're in a tear down?
Anthony Franco
3:38
Yeah, it's more about the acquiring team not wanting to get burned by the prospect unless they're both fringe contenders
3:39
I could see the Rays preferring not to trade Zack Littell to the Red Sox when they're fighting for the same playoff spot. There'd be no reason for the White Sox to decide they're not willing to trade Adrian Houser to Cleveland though

After the Soto to the Mets trade set the tone, what's a realistic floor and ceiling for the rest of the O's deadline? Soto seemed like one of the lesser value pieces to be moved, and I liked the return we were able to get from him. Curious to see if that trend continues.
Anthony Franco
3:40
Yeah I thought they did pretty well there. Doesn't seem dramatically worse than what they sent to Philly for a year and a half of Soto last summer
3:42
Darragh and I talked about this on the pod this week but I think I'd have the O/U on trades for them at 7.5. Morton, Eflin, Dominguez, ROH, Mullins, Kittredge, Laureano all should go. O'Hearn, Domínguez and (to a lesser extent) Morton should bring some interesting mid-level pieces

What chances do the Reds have to get Suarez from Arizona?
Anthony Franco
3:43
Mark Feinsand downplayed the chances on that one pretty soon after The Athletic report came out.  I think that'd be a little too rich for them as a bubble team, both in salary and prospect cost
Adding a Laureano type to address the outfield directly and keeping Marte mostly at third makes more sense to me

On August 1st, what uniform will Mason Miller be wearing?
Anthony Franco

All the talk is about the Jays acquiring a top of rotation starter with control.  With how good Laurr has been, wouldn’t they be better off acquiring someone like Mike Soroka or Reid Detmers who can start, but have also proven to be lights out in the bullpen?
Anthony Franco
3:45
Top-end starter still feels like the priority. Wouldn't feel great about any of the guys they have talking the ball for Game 1 of a playoff series
3:46
Adding a guy like Soroka to work as multi-inning insurance behind Lauer doesn't feel like it's moving the needle enough. Can't see the Angels trading Detmers either way, and he's probably locked into the bullpen for the rest of this year at least
3:47
Could be a long-term rotation option in future years, but he's basically been a strictly one-inning guy since April. Building back as a swing option this late in the season is a tough ask
Ken
3:48
Do you think the A's move Soderstrom at the deadline?
Anthony Franco
3:49
No but they at least see what's out there in terms of controllable starting pitching. Feels more like an offseason situation though
3:50
He can play left field for a couple more months in a lost season anyways, then they can see if they align somewhere with a team like Pittsburgh or Miami that could give up a starter for a bat

Ozuna goes to??  For??
Anthony Franco
3:54
A lot depends on how much they're willing to pay down. Tough to find fits if they want to offload the prorated $16M. Assuming they're open to kicking in a couple million, he'd make sense for the Reds or Rangers. I'd expect less than Arizona got for Naylor though

Cubs need multiple SPs. Should they get Cease to lead the rotation with Shota and then a back-end starter? Or should they aim higher than that?
Nick
3:54
Matt shaw is starting to hit.  Cubs number 1 priority has to be 2 starting pitchers.  1 being someone you can trust in the playoffs,  correct?
Greg
3:55
With McMahon off the board how aggressive will the Cubs be going after Suarez ? Any chance they will trade Happ to open a spot for Owens?
Anthony Franco
3:56
I do not see them trading Happ. Letting Caissie destroy Triple-A for now is fine. He'll very likely have an opportunity to replace Tucker next year. I think they can get by with Shaw at third base
3:58
Agree that the top priority is a playoff-caliber starter to join Boyd and Imanaga. Cease, Lugo, long shot push for Joe Ryan all make sense. Gotta get a better bench bat than Justin Turner too
JeffyM
3:59
Could the Angels be enticed to give up Detmers and Adell for Yesavage, Roden, Kasevich, and Schneider?
Anthony Franco
4:00
I'd find that pretty persuasive, but I'm lower on Adell than they probably are. Yesavage as a headliner would get my attention though

If Gallen moves, does a change of scenery actually help him or is this just who he is?
Anthony Franco
4:04
The home run rate should come down a bit whether he stays or goes, but the stuff and chase rate have been gradually trending down for a while now. I think he's basically a league average starter at this point

This year has been a brutal year in the DMV, but I am not ready to give up on the Nats next year by trading Mackenzie Gore. Perhaps Dylan Crews returns and starts to fulfill his promise. Maybe Cade Cavalli does, too. Biggest question is whether the Lerners forgot how to spend money. Thoughts?
Anthony Franco
4:05
Agree with all that and don't think it makes much sense to trade Gore before they decide on a long-term plan at GM
Alright, I need to wrap up here
