Yeah more of a cheap back-end stabilizer type than a play at the top of the market though
3:35
Miz, Harrison and whichever of Henderson, Sproat or Drohan are going well is still a quality playoff rotation even if Woodruff doesn't come back. They'll lean heavily on the bullpen anyway

3:35
What exactly is it about the Yankees roster construction that makes them completely fall apart around this time every year? Consistent bad luck or something they could fix?
Anthony Franco
3:37
Last couple seasons mostly related to Judge. Obviously not available for the past six weeks this year, had his relative "cold" stretch before the flexor injury mid-summer last year
Why does an otherwise solid lineup completely collapse when he's not carrying them? Not sure
Abe
3:38
Any hope left for Austin Wells or is it time to accept he just isn’t a major league hitter?
Anthony Franco
3:40
He was a good enough hitter for his first couple seasons that I'm not ready to bury his career, but it's clearly not working this year and they have to find someone better
JudgeJRam
3:40
NYY and Cleveland's play w/out Judge and J-Ram make it clear they are the two most valuable players.
Anthony Franco
3:42
Up there certainly but the Dodgers have won consecutive World Series since signing Ohtani while the Angels have had the worst three-year stretch in franchise history as soon as he left
Daniel
3:42
When can we expect Kemp Alderman to make his big league debut?
Anthony Franco
3:44
I imagine he'd have been up already if he hadn't gotten hurt in May. Tougher to find a spot for him now that Conine's back and the lineup's firing
3:46
If Caissie winds up missing decent time, could see Alderman coming up. If they're expecting close to a minimal IL stay around the ASG for Caissie, less reason to do it
Alderman would probably go back down after a couple games, plus they'd need to make a 40-man move which isn't the case with Hinds

With Griffin out for two months and Spencer and Cruz not back yet is it safe to say we might become sellers instead of potential buyers?
Anthony Franco
3:47
Cherington was asked about this yesterday and said it doesn't change their current plans. Implied they could poke around for a stopgap shortstop and still intended to buy
3:48
More context here from the Post-Gazette:
3:49
I believe that's all true but we'll see how July plays out. They're four back right now, which is manageable, but if it falls to 7-8 by the deadline because the lineup's decimated, that unfortunately is what it is
3:50
At that point, just have to take what they can get for Gregory Soto and make a decision on whether they'd extend or QO Brandon Lowe
JeffyM82
3:51
The Blue Jays beat a terrible Giants team two days in a row and all of a sudden the fanbase is shouting "We Back" and talking about buying at the deadline.  What do you think?  Should they be buyers or sellers?
Anthony Franco
3:53
Another one that depends on where the standings are in a month but if they're still within 2-3 games, definitely not selling
3:55
Wouldn't be all that aggressive in trying to buy either beyond picking up a more reliable LH reliever. At some point, just going to need your best players (Vlad, Kirk, Varsho) to play like it
Bruce T.
3:55
Does Trout waive No Trade clause and accept a move to Braves?  How much does Arte pay, what players go to Halos?
Anthony Franco
3:55
John Mozeliak already said they're not trading Trout
State of the League
3:56
With the AL seeming mostly mediocre and things tightening up in the NL East, it feels like this year could produce MLB for MLB talent trades between contenders with excess pieces in certain areas. Are there any likely players/teams you could see moved in this manner?
Anthony Franco
3:56
Yeah this will just increasingly be a thing given the larger playoff fields, fewer teams clearly out of it
3:57
And the handful that are have basically stripped the roster down completely
3:59
San Diego swapping bullpen for a bat or starter, Cubs could do something involving Matt Shaw for starting pitching, Rays can kind of do anything aside from trading their top three hitters (maybe flip Garrett Cleavinger for OF help?)
4:00
Houston might have to deal from the MLB roster to get a LHH OF. Cardinals could "sell" Lars Nootbaar or Dustin May but build it around upper level pitching that could still contribute this year
Dave Dombrowski
4:01
Can I build a trade around Andrew Painter and Gage Wood for Sonny Gray and Aroldis Chapman? Will it be enough to outbid my competition? Our window is closing and I want to get my cigar-selling boss his (*&%$@) trophy back.
Anthony Franco
4:02
Man, yeah I imagine that would do it but would really require Dombrowski to go all-in on not caring about post-2027 in the slightest
Little Texas
4:02
should the Rangers go all in or all out and sell. Does the revenue coming in from staying in and having at least a minute playoff game outweigh selling.
Anthony Franco
4:04
They're in a weird spot because most of the names they'd have to market are on huge contracts so it'd be more about salary relief than completely rejuvenating the farm system
4:06
Would be a weird pivot to sell when they're hanging in the division a few months after trading five prospects -- including last year's #12 overall pick -- for Gore
4:07
Not a great team but also not that difficult a sell that one running deGrom, Eovaldi, Gore, and one of Rocker or Leiter would be a tough out in a short series
Arte and Mo
4:07
Detmers, Soriano, and Neto - could they each fetch 2-3 Top 100 prospects?
Anthony Franco
4:09
Two apiece on Neto and Detmers sounds right. Maybe a little below on Soriano with the command woes coming back and issues turning a lineup over a third time
Nature v nurture
4:10
In your opinion, is the success of smaller market teams like Tampa, Cleveland, Milwaukee, due to them drafting/trading more effectively or just developing the players better that they acquire via draft/trade?
Anthony Franco
4:11
They do have a little more margin for error in the draft between getting competitive balance picks and very rarely forfeiting their own to sign qualified free agents
