Hey everyone, hope you're all having a great week!
4:01
Looking forward to another of these, let's get rolling
John
4:01
What do you think the Mets are ultimately going to do about Pete Alonso? Extend, trade, or wait it out until he hits free agency?
Anthony Franco
4:04
I'd guess they get an extension done next winter. I do think they should be open to a trade if those talks don't really get going, but Cohen seems pretty confident they'll be able to work it out and there was almost no Alonso trade chatter this summer

What was the most suprising return/lack of return out of all the deadline deals, in your opinion
Anthony Franco
4:08
Hmm, this is an interesting one. Nothing super shocking in terms of the big names who were expected to go and got moved. Guess I would've expected Detroit to do better than a hit-first second base prospect for Lorenzen. Wouldn't have guessed the Marlins would give up Eder for Burger if someone proposed that as a "who says no" in one of these chats a couple weeks probably
Mike
4:08
The way Rays have been playing do you think they still have a chance for the postseason?
Anthony Franco
4:09
I'd be shocked if they miss the postseason, would flip to Baltimore as my pick to win the East though
John
4:09
Where do you see the top free agent pitchers ending up next year? Seems some teams who spend money like the Dodgers, Padres, Yankees and Mets, for example, will all need rotation help. Could make for an interesting offseason.
Anthony Franco
4:11
Agree with the ones you listed, maybe aside from the Dodgers (though they'll be in on everybody as always). The New York teams make sense. Even if the Mets are out on the top handful of guys, they'll need to hit the next tier down. St. Louis is going to have to spend on better pitching than they usually do. San Diego will either need to retain or replace Snell/Lugo
Dave Kaval sucks
4:11
Under Fischer, the As never spent money on their team or stadium. Kaval just said that maintaining their revenue sharing was an important consideration with the switch to LV. The As want MLB to waive the relocation fee. Sell The Team chants break out in every city the As visit. Why in the world are the other owners putting up with Fischer leeching off of them while simultaneously taking a dump on the brand one year after labor strife?
Anthony Franco
4:14
Fisher's probably the most extreme example but a lot of what he's doing is stuff most owners do to varying degrees. Teams are always angling for public funding for stadium upgrades, etc.
4:15
I'm sure there are large-market owners who are quietly frustrated with it behind the scenes, though they'll vote in favor of relocation when it comes up to keep a united front. Each time there's a CBA negotiation, you see a little more divide between small and large-market franchises on revenue sharing though
Dave Kaval sucks
4:15
The Cardinals usually draft around 17 or higher, but next year will have a low draft number and a low pick for the second round. Should they value that low second round pick enough to nix and FAs with QOs attached?
Anthony Franco
4:16
I wouldn't categorically rule myself out on any qualified free agent for the draft pick. It's a consideration obviously -- and a slightly bigger one this time around than normal for them -- but the expected value of even a high second-round pick is pretty low
4:18
That'd be a real prospect but likely someone in the 15-20 range on their organizational prospect rankings. It matters, but it's a relatively small consideration compared to the short-term upgrade they'd be expecting from whatever qualified free agent they're targeting
wvpirate
4:18
The Pirates have brought up alot of their young prospects and are starting to gel. This winter the Pirates should do what next?
Anthony Franco
4:19
Need to supplement the starting pitching, especially since Roansy Contreras has had an awful year. Adding an infielder who can get regular reps while bouncing between multiple positions would be ideal with varying degrees of uncertainty at first, second and shortstop

4:20
Hey, Anthony.  Thanks as always.  Couple of questions here.  1.)  Will Justin Verlander win 300 games?  2.) If he does (or doesn't) will anyone else reach that many wins??
Anthony Franco
4:21
He's at 250 right now. I'd take the under on 50 more, he'd have to stay remarkably durable and effective into his mid-40s to get there.
4:22
Will anyone else ever make it? I think so but it's a hell of a lot harder to do than it was (and obviously was never easy) and I don't have an answer for which pitcher I think is likeliest to get there
4:23
It'd have to be someone who's either in their first couple seasons or hasn't yet reached the majors, I think
Rick
4:23
Pena for the Astros has been underwhelming this year, but he's young and showed in the world series what he can do. What do you expect going forward?  Does he have potential for being a 10 ten shortstop or is he more of an average one?
Anthony Franco
4:25
Yeah I think top ten shortstop is still in there. This feels like more or less the floor and it's an almost average season. Would still expect him to hit for more power in future seasons than he has this year
I don't think he's going to be a consistent All-Star because of the OBP concerns but a slightly above-average everyday shortstop feels right based on the glove and power potential
A's Fan
4:26
Just wanted to point out that MLB.com and Baseball America just updated their Team Top 30 lists and none of the prospects the A's acquired from th Olson, Chapman, or Murphy trades are in the Top 10.
Anthony Franco
4:27
It'd be disingenuous for me to criticize the Chapman deal. I thought they did well there at the time, Hoglund just hasn't been healthy
4:28
Murphy trade always looked like a weird move. The choice of Ruiz > William Contreras (even with Langeliers at the MLB level) was a risk that, so far, hasn't looked great. Olson deal looks like a disaster, huge whiff on the evaluation of Pache
4:29
I'm not ready to bury Langeliers yet but he was obviously a key factor in both the Olson (arguable centerpiece) and Murphy trades. They need a ton more than they've gotten from him so far
John
4:29
Give us your August 11 prediction for who makes the playoffs. NL Wild Card situation looks particularly interesting.
Anthony Franco
4:30
Atlanta/Dodgers obviously, Milwaukee in the Central. I'll take SF, Philly and Miami for the Wild Cards
Dave Kaval sucks
4:30
why are K% and BB% considered better stats that k/9 and BB/9?
Anthony Franco
4:31
Take an inning where a pitcher faces eight hitters. He strikes out two but gives up four hits and a walk
4:32
An 18 K/9 would make it seem like he's really tough for opponents to hit. A 25% strikeout rate more accurately reflects that he wasn't actually that dominant at missing bats, he just gave up a bunch of batted balls that landed for hits
4:33
Obviously an extreme example in a one-inning sample, but that's the general idea. Doing it per plate appearance instead of per inning is a better reflection of how effective that pitcher has been on a batter-for-batter basis

What are the White Sox going to do with Tim Anderson? Doesn’t seem right for the team anymore. Winter trade?
Anthony Franco
4:34
I'd guess they exercise the option and trade him for a marginal return, yeah
Ben
4:34
Can you rank the 6 AL teams currently on pace to make the postseason from most to least likely to make a World Series run?
Anthony Franco
4:35
I'd go Houston-Baltimore-Texas-Tampa Bay-Toronto-Minnesota
Madag
4:35
Of the four major changes( schedule, shift, pitch clock,  and base size), which do you consider has had the most impact?
