Overall, probably the pitch clock. But they've had disproportionate effects on different aspects of the game
4:37
Pitch clock has had the most impact on the sport's watchability (and potentially pitcher injuries, though that's more tenuous). More balanced schedule has probably had the biggest effect on the standings but skewing things even heavier in favor of the East/West at the expense of the Centrals (where there are fewer free in-division wins)

I didn’t see any dreaded player to be named later in trades this year.  Do teams not put a caveat for a “better” prospect based on the traded player’s performance?   When was the last ptbnl involved in a trade that was ?
Anthony Franco
4:38
Hadn't noticed this, but I think you're right there weren't any PTBNL in the deadline deals. None that spring to mind, at least
4:40
I don't believe teams can put a performance caveat that allows them to carve players out from a PTBNL list. That'd defeat the purpose in a lot of instances, which is to allow the acquiring team a little more evaluation time on a handful of players they're considering

Sorry to repeat in part. Touched the Send button by mistake mid post. Any credence to Carlos Carrasco's latest mechanics fix? Velo up a couple of ticks, 5 K's last start. And what are the chances that Mets re-sign him next year?
Anthony Franco
4:42
Velo uptick is nice, getting a few more whiffs on the fastball. Seems like he's finding his footing a little bit but he was so bad early in the season that I imagine the Mets move on once he hits free agency

Since the all star break the Braves seem very average certainly not baseballs best team.Their starting pitching has become almost the worst in baseball. How concerned should I be?
Anthony Franco
4:43
Not concerned at all. They're still coasting to the division title/first-round bye. They'll have time for Fried to establish a rhythm, maybe welcome Wright back for the postseason
4:44
Elder was pitching above his head in the first half. Tough to sustain quite that level when you're as ground-ball reliant as he is. Not worried about Strider at all. Yonny Chirinos isn't going to be starting any must-win games this year

Does Brian Woo really have "forearm" something or other (note: the team is saying it's no big deal)? Or is this a common trick teams play to limit innings without pissing off the player (and his agent) by sending him to the minors? One assumes the player (and his agent) are perfectly OK just playing along, given the salary differential between the pros and the minors while he's on the major-league DL. Cause it sure seems awfully convenient...
Anthony Franco
4:45
I don't want to speculate on Woo specifically. I have no reason to believe he's not actually hurt
4:47
In general though, there are certainly times when it behooves everyone involved to put a player on the injured list with something they could've played through. Sometimes that's for confidence reasons -- Noah Syndergaard used air-quotes when describing the blisters that kept him out for the two months preceding his trade to Cleveland -- or for workload management as you suggest

Hello, Anthony! Hope all is well! Could you see the Braves having any shot at Otanhi? I know there is talk of West Coast bias. I know the Budget constraints. But, window is obviously now and he would fill DH and a starting role for them. Is it prudent? They can always sell if it does not go well within a couple years and rebuild their system with players he would bring.
Anthony Franco
4:48
I don't really see it. Doesn't feel very Braves. The payroll's pretty high and the front office prefers to do its heavy lifting via trades and/or extensions as opposed to free agency
4:49
Ohtani's special and I'm sure they'll check in, but if I were stacking up odds on Ohtani landing spots, Atlanta would probably be in the 10-15 range

What will Matt Chapman’s FA contract look like? Who will be the most likely pursuers?
Anthony Franco
4:50
I'm lower on Chapman than the others at MLBTR, I think. The strikeouts are a real concern for me. Next time we do our free agent power rankings, I'll make a (probably unsuccessful) push to get Bellinger above him as the top non-Ohtani position player
4:51
All that said, I'd surprised if he weren't at least in Nimmo/Semien range ($160-175MM over seven). Great defensive profile, good but not elite bat. Consistent career track record
I just think we went a little too far in projecting him over $200MM earlier in the season
4:52
Cubs, Phillies, Yankees could all get involved. Toronto should try to keep him around

What to do with Nola?  Is this just an aberration fueled by a high HR rate or are the skills declining at age 30?
Anthony Franco
4:54
Feels like a fluke to me, similar to '21 when the high strand rate stuck him with a 4.63 ERA. Plus command, excellent at getting hitters to chase off the plate, strikeouts are back after an early-season dip
I'm still in on him as essentially the same guy he's been for a the past few years
Seattle Mariners AAA team
4:55
Considering all the promotions directly from AA, when does Seattle become the first MLB team to abandon an AAA team?
Anthony Franco
4:55
Ha, I think they're right to avoid the PCL (especially for their pitching prospects) at all costs

What do you think were the most overrated and underrated moves at the trade deadline
Anthony Franco
4:58
Flaherty pickup for Baltimore certainly looks interesting (think Drew Rom was a decent get for STL too all things considered). Sewald swap that got Seattle three upper level controllable hitters was probably my favorite "this makes a lot of sense for both sides" move of the deadline

If the Brewers trade Burnes what kind of haul can they expect back for 1year of control? With Boris as his Agent you know he's going to take him to FA and have clubs get into a bidding was for his services.

Demand would still be huge, especially if they move him before the season so the acquiring team can recoup a prospect with the QO. Two back-end top 100 prospects feels justifiable
5:01
I have to keep it at exactly an hour today unfortunately. Have to fill in some stuff for the main site (Tigers just DFA Chasen Shreve)
Sorry for the stuff I couldn't get to. I'm on Twitter if you want to throw anything else at me on there
5:02
I'm off next Friday but there'll still be a chat in some case (either by me moving it up a day or someone else taking over next week). Back to the normal Friday afternoon schedule after that
Thanks for all the questions and for supporting the site as always! Have a great weekend!
