Will I allow my front office to spend any money this offseason?
Anthony Franco
5:37
Eh, the Twins' front office seemed really hamstrung by ownership last offseason and at the deadline. Not much coming off the books and the TV deal isn't likely to get much better. Guessing you're in for another quiet offseason, at least in free agency

Is there a player and/or pitcher not currently on a 40-man roster, hasn't been all season, and would be eligible to be traded that could make a contribution to a major league team this year?
Anthony Franco

These tend to be speed/contact guys who could contribute off the bench. Alejo López maybe? Decent numbers in Gwinnett, some defensive flexibility, good strike zone awareness

Having been a proponent forever of Baseball getting rid of the 5 inning minimum for a P to get a win, it seems Manfred is doubling down on dumb by trying to extend. I say let the official scorer decide who the winning P should be. Right now a reliever can come in with a 1 run lead, Give up 3 runs and his team scores 4 and he gets a win for stinking. Plus I have no idea how they get it by the Players Union. Your thoughts? Thanks as always
Anthony Franco

Yeah this is part of the reason that the stat itself is not good, especially for relievers. It'd be super inconsistent if you just gave official scorers free rein, but I don't hate the idea of letting them decide who the top pitcher on a given day was. It'd be an interesting footnote in a box score at least

Fan forums are full of comments, usually negative ,about their teams manager. How much influence do you think a manager has on team success? From the animations of Boone to the bobbleheadedness of Snitker do they really matter?
Anthony Franco
5:46
I don't think on-field temperament matters but there must be some impact in a manager's off-field leadership skills. That's basically impossible to evaluate from outside, though, and I think there's a pretty small range between the best and worst in-game tacticians (which is more visible to fans but I'd guess is far less impactful than clubhouse acumen)
5:47
The tactical stuff mattered more a couple decades ago (and certainly did back in the days when the manager was basically constructing the roster). Teams tend to see the game the same way nowadays and generally make pretty similar decisions to one another

Do you think Hunter Greene pulls off the surprise come from behind Cy Young win?
Anthony Franco
5:49
I'd probably have him behind Sale and Wheeler but he's right there. I'll guess Greene's a finalist but ultimately doesn't win
Rob Thomson

2024 is the 60th anniversary of 1964. If I wind up being the second coming of Gene Mauch, am I gone?
Anthony Franco
5:52
Ha, well this would indeed be one hell of a collapse. The Phillies are going to make the playoffs. I don't think they'd fire Thomson even if they didn't make it unless the collapse was the result of a clubhouse revolt or something crazy

Shelton’s in-game managing of the pitching staff, constant lineup changes and total reliance on analytics w/ zero feel should be enough to get him fired. He doesn’t know what he’s doing.
Anthony Franco
5:54
You may be right, but you could probably find a variation of this complaint from fans of every team in MLB
5:57
I don't follow any individual team closely enough to feel like I can evaluate a manager's in-game tactical skill, especially in the regular season. That's especially true with the Pirates since I'm blacked out of almost all their games. But the team's results tend to align with the middling expectations I usually carry into the season based on the lack of lineup depth
M's hitting woes
5:57
The Mainers have tried everything to fix their hitting woes, but nothing seems to work.(Yesterday, they got a single hit, in an away game, so you can't blame T-Mobile park.) Is it their coaches, their manager, bad choice of players? How do you fix the bats?
Anthony Franco
6:01
The park is part of it but it was always likely to be a top-heavy lineup that placed a ton of emphasis on Julio, in particular, and he's having a bad year. I do think it's fair for them to question the hitting staff with how dramatically Polanco and Garver have fallen off -- and they obviously made the change with Brant Brown in May -- but the solution is probably another trade bonanza next winter
Alright we've hit the two-hour mark so I need to wrap this one
