Does Benson lose time now with recent additions? What does ‘24 look like for him?
Anthony Franco
4:39
They already weren't playing him against lefties. Guessing Renfroe just take weak side platoon AB's that had been going to Fairchild and Senzel. Could see Bader cutting into Benson's time a bit for defensive purposes but I doubt it'll be drastic
4:40
I don't think it has any impact on his '24 role with the team. Bader and Renfroe will both be free agents. Doubt the Reds try to re-sign either, just seized on a weird opportunity to help the team for the stretch run

What's the purpose of the Twins calling up another lefty hitting outfielder?
Anthony Franco
4:42
Andrew Stevenson has ok minor league numbers but he's more of a speed/defense guy. I imagine it's just to give Baldelli an extra pinch-running or defensive sub option late in games. Can't imagine he gets more than a start or two (at least until/unless the Twins clinch the Central)

Thanks again, Anthony.  What the hell are the Angels gonna do for a line-up next year?  any chance they'd resign people like Renfroe, Moustakas and Drury to tide them over while they try to do some sort of rebuild of the farm system?
Anthony Franco
4:43
All hinges on Ohtani, I think. They'll try to bring him back, and if they succeed, they'll need to take shots on the kind of veteran you mentioned (although I doubt it'll be Renfroe and they already have Drury under contract for another year)
4:44
If Ohtani walks, they should trade Drury and Estévez and commit to a rebuild. I'd give real thought to trading Trout too if he's open to waiving the no-trade stuff, but I imagine that's a bridge too far for Moreno in one offseason

Who of today’s call ups (the first timers particularly, like loftin, wells, the Martian) do you see making a bigger impact  over this last month?
Anthony Franco
4:47
I think Dominguez has the best shot to immediately look like a star. Andre Lipcius can probably hit at an MLB average level right now but I wouldn't expect him to make an "impact" the way you're probably asking

Good afternoon Anthony, and thanks for these chats.  While he has accomplished a 20HR/20SB season (so far) as a rookie, why isn't Anthony Volpe getting more support for ROY?  He is the first Yankees rookie to hit 20HR in 61 years (Tom Tresh).
Anthony Franco
4:48
The rate stats just haven't been there. He's hitting .219 with a .296 on-base percentage
4:49
I'm reasonably encouraged by Volpe's debut. He's shown the intriguing physical tools, made some improvements with the strikeouts down the stretch
4:50
But in comparison to Gunnar Henderson or Josh Jung -- both of whom have also topped 20 homers with much better averages and OBP marks -- Volpe's pretty clearly behind for me

will the braves extend Fried?
Anthony Franco
4:51
I'm sure they'll try but I think he's probably too close to free agency at this point. They usually strike on guys in their pre-arb or after their first arbitration year
Dodger Dave
4:51
With Gonsolin and May out for most of 24, do you think LA will be active in starting trade market? Especially with Othani Examples Woodruff Brewers or Cease White Sox.
Anthony Franco
4:53
They'll be active on both free agency and trade, yeah. I don't think the White Sox or moving Cease but could see either of Woodruff or Burnes, maybe Shane Bieber or Nick Pivetta
Bobby
4:53
Of Orelvis Martinez, Addison Barger, Spencer Horowitz, or Davis Schneider... who replaces Chapman next year?
Anthony Franco
4:54
I think Barger has the best chance of that group to be an everyday third baseman but they'll bring in a veteran if Chapman walks too

Does St. Louis passing on Giolito on waivers say to you he's not really of interest to them in FA? TBH, he's not my preference of SP either. I'm hoping for a Snell/Urias/Nola type. And I'm leery on Nola with the velo drop, and he's not getting younger. However, if Snell loses velo, he suddenly becomes very "touchable" as well. Your thoughts. What does a package of Carlson/O'Neill/Edman get you on the SP front in the offseason? Could also dangle Herrera although I'm not as exited to do that. I think he should be the number 2 next year, and trade Kiz. But Mo hasn't called me to get my opinion yet.
Anthony Franco
4:56
I don't think it reflects anything beyond them being out of contention this year and wanting to get looks at Liberatore and Rom
4:58
Carlson or Edman (the latter especially) would have a decent amount of trade appeal but I don't think they're packaging three position players for a starter. A team trading away a high-end starter probably isn't looking for three MLB position players
Rick
4:58
Detmers showed some flashes of being a good SP, but mostly he's been mediocre or worse. Do you see anything to make you think he can be a SP2 or SP3 type?
Anthony Franco
5:00
Still missing a decent number of bats, has shown the ability to handle right-handed hitters. Velo's still good. Hasn't been a good year but I still buy him as a #3 starter

After losing Renfroe on waivers (I'm in an AL-only league), who is better (given all the variables, e.g., Buxton being activated) … Michael A. Taylor, Akil Baddoo, Drew Waters, Oswaldo Cabrera, Ryan Noda?  Speed is NOT a concern … I am +60 in SB.
Anthony Franco
5:02
I guess I'd go with Noda. Not the most inspiring options haha
Mike Tauchman
5:02
Am I a free agent after the season? If I was, what kind of contract would I get after becoming a leadoff hitter and solid center fielder for a team in contention?
Anthony Franco
5:03
He's eligible for arbitration for three more years
5:04
Don't think there'd be a ton of free agent interest. He's having a good year but he'll be 33 and this is his first season with 300+ plate appearances at the MLB level. Rafael Ortega was pretty good for the Cubs from 2021-22 and they non-tendered him anyways
5:05
I don't think they'll do that with Tauchman and am pretty confident he'd find a major league deal for a couple million dollars if they did, but it wouldn't be super lucrative

The Padres are known for having quite the aggressive front office, while their top heavy lineup and bullpen are the biggest contributing factors to their disappointing season.
Knowing this, who in particular is San Diego likely to key in on during free agency? Might they strike another trade?
Anthony Franco
5:10
They'll have to address the back of the rotation and build the lineup depth. Could try to bring Lugo back, maybe J.D. Martinez to replace Carp at DH

Aaron Judge hit 52 homers as a rookie in 2017

Greetings.  The waiver dumps were fantastic.  There is always someone smart enough to figure out a loophole.  I think it just highlights my pet poems on revenue disparity. What did the players think admit this?
Anthony Franco
5:13
Their quotes were all professional about it. Bader seemed disappointed since he's a New York guy but I imagine everyone who got claimed appreciates the chance to play in at least potentially meaningful games down the stretch

Does Schneider get replaced by Mattingly if the jays don't make the playoffs?
