Soto v Tatis v Witt v Rodriguez and similar?
Anthony Franco
3:36
Tatis, Witt and Julio all signed early-career extensions. Soto's going to smash those deals as a free agent. He's probably doubling Witt money

Do you think how hard it is to hit in Seattle is overblown? I feel like they would have a better offense if they would sign better hitters. Signing/trading for C and D-List guys coming off of career years (Ty France, Mitch Garver, Mitch Haniger, Jesse Winker) isn't a winning strategy. You get what you pay for. Luke Raley and..... that's about it. Go way back for Russell Branyan for the last time that that worked?
Anthony Franco
3:39
Winker and Garver might've been coming off career years but they had pretty strong multi-year track records as above-average bats. Polanco has been one of the better offensive second basemen in the game
3:41
I don't think they're necessarily buying high on those guys, but you're certainly right that none of them are stars. Arozarena's probably the closest thing to a star offensive acquisition for them in a while (maybe since Canó). The mid-tier market for hitters in general hasn't had a great ROI
3:43
So I mostly agree with your "get what you pay for" sentiment but that's more of an ownership issue than a front office one, and I've mostly liked the players the Mariners have brought in within those limitations. Could be that I also just overrated those players, but the drop-off for a lot of those guys has been so extreme that the park must have something to do with it
Teoscar falls in there too. Maybe a little shy of a star but the dude has really hit everywhere else he's been

After 3 excellent seasons, Bednar has fallen apart this year. I know he has had a number of injury issues this season so can we write off this season because of that or do you think this is a long-term situation? Odds he bounces back next year and resumes the closer role?
Anthony Franco
3:45
Still throwing hard but hitters were feasting on the fastball and the whiffs have disappeared. Not very optimistic, think they just missed their chance to cash him in when they should've

Your opinion on whether Dodgers still have enough pitching to win World Series?
Anthony Franco
3:47
As long as Yamamoto and Flaherty hold up, they should be fine. I like Knack well enough as a third option and they've obviously got the offense to hang in a shootout
3:48
I'd have them below Philly in the National League but would still give them the second-best odds to come out of the NL. Gap between them and Milwaukee/San Diego is closer with all the injuries though
Farhan Time is undefeated
3:48
I think Posey and Chapman getting a deal done says less about Zaidi and Boras and more about the analytical POBO/GM vs ex player GM.
Anthony Franco
3:50
It could. Farhan and Boras both pushed back on that report, although that's not entirely surprising since it didn't paint either of them in the greatest light. Agree that in general, the former player/current owner (Posey) is going to be a lot less gun-shy about a deal that covers a player's mid-30s than an exec like Farhan would be

How realistic is it for the Royals to try Salvador Perez at 3B? His Catching defense is "eh" and isn't getting better at 35, but he stopped striking out so now he's playable at even 1B
Anthony Franco
3:51
I don't think it's realistic, certainly not this season. Catcher/1B/DH rotation

Should Texas keep or trade Adolis, sign Santander and use the two as DH and share outfield?
Anthony Franco
3:53
Don't think there's room for both Adolis and Santander. That really restricts Langford to DH with Carter moving to CF even if they move on from Leody
3:54
Trading Adolis while making a run at Santander makes sense if they think García's approach has regressed to the point where he won't rebound

If you were advising Dana Brown, what would you recommend regarding third base, first base, and center field? Which FAs would you pursue? What trades would you recommend? Any prospects ready to fill the holes?
Anthony Franco
3:57
I'd be fine with Meyers in CF for another year. Some decent mid-tier options at first base, Christian Walker would be ideal. If you assume they're not paying Bregman, maybe a Ramón Urías trade? Brice Matthews feels like the long-term answer there but you can't go into next year needing to rely on him

I consider a 3 game series a virtual toss up.  A 5 game series isn't a very good way to determine the better team.  Winning multiple 7 game series is tough.  I don't like playing 162 games and earning a playoff spot, then have a season end with a short playoff series.  For some it's fun do to more randomness, but I don't think it's legitimate.
Anthony Franco
3:59
Agree but I don't think there's anything you can do about it. We're not going back to a time when the best regular season teams automatically won the pennant. Any kind of playoff series is going to have a lot of volatility
4:00
Shrinking the playoff field would ensure you get better teams winning the title but that's a) less revenue for everyone involved and b) saps a lot of fanbases' excitement by taking their teams out of it very early in the season

In your opinion who is better and more reliable Flaherty or Fried as SP? Oniell or Santander OF/DH? Walker or Alonso 1b/DH?
Anthony Franco
4:01
Fried, Santander. I'd take Alonso or Walker in general but for the prices they'll command, I'd rather invest in Walker
4:02
Alright, I need to wrap things here. Sorry for the handful of questions I couldn't get to. Feel free to throw them at me on X as always
