As Sam pointed out, it's also true that they had a pretty soft schedule down the stretch. They took full advantage to their credit, but that's a factor. And of course they owe some gratitude to the Twins for completely folding

From all appearances and results a zombie has taken over Sean Murphy, what can the Braves do?
Anthony Franco

I'd give him one more year and hope that this season was mostly about injuries. Tougher sell when he was also atrocious for the second half of 2023, I admit
4:21
But the FA catching class sucks, so I think it's a bad time to sell low on Murphy. Bring d'Arnaud back and be prepared to give him 90-100 starts behind the plate if Murphy doesn't find it quickly though

Do you think Rhys Hoskins will opt out or pick up his player option for '25?  Definitely a disappointing year average wise, but the power has remained as normal.
Anthony Franco

I expect him to pick up the option. Still hitting homers but the strikeouts are up, exit velo is down a bit from his last couple healthy seasons in Philadelphia. He's hovering around replacement overall
4:25
If he has a monster postseason and carries the Brewers to a World Series, maybe there's enough buzz to justify opting out. But I think he's in a pretty similar spot to where Josh Bell was a year ago, and Bell correctly exercised his option at $16.5MM

When looking at the Rangers, what do you think about them bidding for a bat like Juan Soto and using some of the young players (minus Langford) to acquire pitching help? This would be allocating their funds towards a bat and using prospects for affordable, controllable pitching.

Obviously I'd be on board from a roster perspective but I doubt ownership wants to take on a deal of that magnitude. A lot already on the books and they were relatively quiet last winter coming off a championship because of the TV stuff

Aren't I already too late in the year to make a change in the front office when my team (SF Giants) needs to be active in free agency and build on the Chapman signing
Anthony Franco
4:27
Nah, teams make front office changes at the start of the playoffs all the time. Farhan himself wasn't hired until the first week of November in 2018
4:28
Offseason doesn't start until November and probably won't really kick into gear until after Thanksgiving and leading into the Winter Meetings. They'd have the whole postseason to finalize a hire and sketch out their offseason trajectory

any chance that Pirates GM fires the hitting coach at the end of the season? Andy Haines has been a monumental failure in this position
Anthony Franco
4:29
I would not be surprised if the Pirates made changes to Shelton's staff, including at hitting coach

Who do you think the best manager available will be?  Who do you think the Reds will hire?
Anthony Franco
4:32
I think Schumaker be the most highly sought after manager of the winter. I'm sure the Reds will check in, but he'll have options, and even the Cincinnati front office probably doesn't have a great feel for who they'll zero in on yet

A lot of young, high expectation rookies came up this year. Who do you think might regress as part of a sophomore slump and who looks best positioned for a solid season?
Anthony Franco
4:34
Most of the obvious ones should continue to be very good: Skenes, Merrill, Caminero, Winn, Chourio, etc. There's another gear for Langford and Keith
4:35
Still concerned about Colton Cowser's strikeouts. I like the player but don't think he's a perennial All-Star. Similar feelings on Tyler Fitzgerald. I buy that Austin Wells can hit but a lot of his WAR total is driven by huge framing metrics that'll probably be tough to sustain
4:36
Alright, we're past 90 minutes so I have to wrap things here
4:37
Really fun chat though! Always appreciate the quality of the questions that you all bring on a weekly basis
