But they didn't hire Francona and extend the QO to Martinez if they weren't planning on spending, right?  I think they might surprise people.  I hope lol. It is possible, though,  they they make some trades to upgrade their team.
Darragh McDonald

Yeah, maybe ownership wants to win enough that they don't care about the TV deal collapsing. Or maybe they realize that they need to win if people are going to pay to stream. It's possible.

What is the major reason that some pitchers who go to Japan and Korea dramatically improve their repertoires?
Darragh McDonald
2:08
I don't know if there's one reason. I could just be opportunity.
2:09
With someone like Fedde, MLB teams probably weren't going to give him a shot, so he went were he had the best chance of keeping a job for a full year.

Could the M's get Luis Arraez to play 1b/2b from San Diego?
Darragh McDonald
2:10
I would have guessed a few weeks ago that the Padres are willing to move Arraez. He's basically this year's Soto. Just acquired but a year away from free agency and therefore easier to trade and free up some budget space.
2:11
But there haven't been any rumors suggested he's available, so maybe that's not going to happen.

What do you see Randal Grichuk signing for and do you think he’d accept a mostly platoon-ish role spelling the Orioles’ various lefty outfielders?
Darragh McDonald
2:12
He only got $2MM from the Diamondbacks a year ago. He should get a raise after a strong season, but probably not a huge one. He still did most of his damage against lefties.
2:13
Maybe 1/6 or 2/10?
I imagine he'd prefer an everyday job, but if he doesn't find it, I'm sure he'd happily be a lefty masher on the Orioles.

Kiley McDaniel today made a compelling case for Spencer Turnbull as an under-the-radar, high variance/upside depth sign, citing the 143 Stuff+ on the sweeper he introduced in Philadelphia and the 1.67 ERA he put up in the Phillies rotation before moving to the pen and then getting hurt. He can’t stay healthy but that sweeper has me dreaming. How do you see his market shaping up and what’s a realistic offer?
Darragh McDonald
2:14
We had a lot of conversations about Turnbull for the Top 50. I think we really wanted to get him on, for the reasons you mentioned, and give him the last spot.
2:15
The results have been very intriguing but we found it hard to go much beyond 1/7 for the health stuff you mentioned. A two-year deal is certainly possible but it would be a big risk for a club.
He has only once thrown more than 57 innings in a season.

I wanted to thank Trade Rumors for the video chat this week. It gave an insight into the dynamic of the team. I think this has been asked but I'm curious when we might see the first top tier signing this off-season.
Darragh McDonald
2:15
Thank you, Alan!
2:16
I guess "top tier" is somewhat subjective.
Passan's column this week suggested Teoscar wants to sign real quick after he had a prolonged free agency last year.
So, that could come soon. If he's not top tier, I would guess early December.

Can you see the Pirates and Orioles aligning on a trade that sends an MLB-ready/close to ready arm (Harrington, Ashcraft, etc.) for Mountcastle?
Darragh McDonald
2:17
I don't think Mountcastle has that kind of trade value, no.
2:18
He's a power-only first baseman, which is not something teams value terribly highly. He's down to two years of club control and will be making $6.6MM next year.

There's a common assumption that nearly every free agent will take the highest-dollar contract offered. Do we know this is accurate, or is this simply a best guess in most cases? I would speculate that team competitiveness, location, taxes, and other factors come into play more often than we think.
Darragh McDonald
2:19
It's not always the case, no.
2:20
Just for a recent example, it was reported that Aaron Judge could have made more money by going to the Padres or Giants, but he chose to stay with the Yankees.
Charlie Morton has only signed with Atlanta or Tampa in recent years to be near his family in Florida.
2:21
Clayton Kershaw has said he either wants to stay with the Dodgers or maybe play for the Rangers because he's from the Dallas area.
But a lot of guys are aware they only get one chance to get a big payday and then that's it.
2:23
Let's say you're Willy Adames right now. Just turned 29. It's your best chance to get an insane amount of money to take care of your family for generations.
2:24
I'm guessing he probably wants to capitalize on that. Even if the geographic or other factors aren't perfect, it's only for a few years.

No question, just a comment. Couldn’t join live, but watched the video chat replay last night. That was awesome!  Hope there’s more in the future, and hopefully I can join.

Thanks, Matt!

Is there any reason to think we’ll see any real action ahead of the Winter Meetings? Or should I stop refreshing Twitter every five seconds for a few weeks and actually focus on my job 😂
Darragh McDonald
2:25
Haha. I recommend the MLBTR app. It can send you a notification whenever anything happens.

Where do you see Nick Pivetta landing?  The QO makes things interesting.
Darragh McDonald
2:26
I'd still lean Red Sox at this point. He could accept the QO. But even if he gets a nice three-year deal or something, they are the only club that could give him that without forfeiting a draft pick.

Why would the Tigers be so frequently connected to Alex Bregman and never to Willy Adames?  I know they have Baez on the payroll, but he appears to be a sunk cost.
Darragh McDonald
2:27
I guess because of the AJ Hinch connection. But you're right that Adames could fit just as well.
