My favorite part of the draft is the character of the men selected.  WR Wilson is the first WR drafted since James Washington that wasn't an immature, selfish punk.  The others drafted seem to be good team players.  Has the organization decided to refocus on this type of player after abandoning that philosophy under Tomlin?  Or could this be just luck that the players that they wanted had these traits?  I sure hope it's the former.

I don't know that they abandoned that policy under Tomlin because that's not taking into account today's players and how they react when they sign a big contract. Character is something they tend to seek, though sometimes that is the second checked box after "crazy talent."

Better odds the Pirates will win the NL Central or that the Steelers have completely outsmarted the other 30 NFL teams by signing Wilson and trading for Fields?

Not a fair fight

Gerry, two questions concerning Payton Wilson.  1) Did health concerns cause his drop to the third round?  2) Are those concerns ones the Steelers (and fan expectations) should take into account?
Gerry Dulac

The Steelers did not have a medical red flag on Wilson. If they did, they wouldn't have drafted him.

Gerry, my opinion is the potential WR lineup will be good, perhaps very good, but not great. Not like Super Bowl contenders anyway. Am I alone on the ledge?
Gerry Dulac
2:11
We'll see. George Pickens can be very good if he can focus on the right things

Had Fautanu not have been there at 20, do you think they would have taken Barton or someone else?
Gerry Dulac
2:12
Yes. Barton
Gregg from Shaler

Aside from injury- how bad would #3 have to play (and for how many games) before #2 would get a start? I would think they’d want to know if Fields has franchise QB potential so they know who to sign for next year.
Gerry Dulac
2:12
Gregg, their intention is to sign both for next year.

still no " plug up the middle" type nose tackle on the roster???
Gerry Dulac
2:14
Just Benton and Mon Adams. I get Benton, he's very good. But re-signing Adams was just keeping what you already have, and that's just mediocre. You better hope the Steelers spend the next two seasons paying attention to the defensive line the way they have paid attention to the offensive line the past two years.

Will they renegotiate Hayward’s final yr?  That’s a lot for an aging player whose best / better yrs are behind him.
Gerry Dulac
2:15
I'm not anticipating that. even though it makes some financial sense

Who would you rather have coach the Steelers this season? Mike Tomlin or Jim Harbaugh?
Gerry Dulac
2:15
I'll take the guy who's coaching them
Michael
2:15
When do you think they’ll discuss Fields’ extension?  Is there an indication yet that he wants to stay with Wilson’s current role?
Gerry Dulac
2:16
He knows the situation. To me, I'd do it before the season, and they might too.
Michael
2:16
At this point, are they waiting for camp cuts to fill out their WR room?
Gerry Dulac
2:16
I don't think that's the plan, unless injuries force them otherwise.
Michael

What type of contract is Fields looking for - yrs/$?
Gerry Dulac
2:16
Don't know

I see Boyd is heading to Nashville for less than we reportedly offered him.  I can't blame him.  Levis/Rudolph is a much better QB combination than Wilson/Fields.  They have had more postseason success than the Steelers recently.  Has the organization lost some of it's attraction as a team that players always wanted to play for?
Gerry Dulac
2:17
Glad you said "reportedly" because he was never high on the Steelers list. They want a No. 2 guy and he is not that.
Michael
2:17
Gerry, is there a realistic scenario where this time next yr, Wilson and Fields are both no longer Steelers?  Then what?
Gerry Dulac
2:17
None

How are team captains selected? Do the players vote for 2 captains and tomlin names 2 captains?
Gerry Dulac
2:18
Something like that. It's a nebulous secret process.

Hi Gerry.  I am looking forward to seeing how the young CBs fair in the preseason.  Is there a position group you will be focused on?  Also, I would like to see the TE group upgraded.  I think the PIT media and sports talk think too highly of MUTH, who is just a guy (JAG).  Thoughts?
Gerry Dulac
2:19
I think he is more than just a guy. And I think you will see that the Steelers think that too when they give him a contract extension.

In a vacuum, I don't hate that they didn't pickup Najee's 5th year. But at what point will they spend money on offense? The sad part is Tomlin won't be held accountable if the Defense is underwhelming. At least the offense has a real excuse.
Gerry Dulac
2:20
They have on the offensive line. And they will eventually have to pay those QBs. The only position they would be willing to spend like that is on a No. 2 receiver
Ron
2:20
What are the chances we get 3rd round compensatory picks for both Wilson and Harris after the leave us next year?
Gerry Dulac
2:21
They aren't leaving Ron. At least, I would advise against anticipating that
Ryan
2:21
You think theyre waiting till 6/1 to make a move for a WR2 or just waiting for camp cut downs? or they putting a lot of faith in Roman?
Gerry Dulac
2:21
They are not waiting for any specific date.

Could trading Najee Harris to a team in need of a running back potentially yield the Steelers a legit WR2 or WR3?  Or is the RB position just too de-valued now to yield anything meaningful?
Gerry Dulac
2:21
They are not interested in trading Harris, nor will they.
