OK kids, we're going to start our chat is just a few minutes. Some have requested an extended chat this week. I'll see what I can do.

Hi Gerry and thanks for your time. So there is a lot of talk the Steelers just dont have the talent on Defense. This D is littered with high round draft picks to include 4 first rounders and multiple second rounders.  They dont spend big money in free agency on any top rated D players, (Haden was a gift).  So what do you do?? Seems like if your defense isn't working out with your own high picks you better look to grab someone else's? Your thoughts? Thanks again
Gerry Dulac

Well, you might be right. You have to find talent (or good players) wherever you can get them. And sometimes you get what you pay for (Jon Bostic). They have had a few misses the past couple years with No. 1 picks, starting with Jarvis Jones and not looking so good with Artie Burns and maybe even Bud Dupree. But let's not forget some other good picks like TJ Watt on the first round, Javon Hargrave on the third round and even Sean Davis on the second round. And I think Terrell Edmunds will be a really good player. Of course, you never want to miss on your No. 1 pick, and for the most part the Steelers have rarely done that...until lately.

What do you think the Steelers plan to do with Dupree?
Gerry Dulac
1:35
He will have to agree to a pay cut in some form because there is no way he is worth -- and the team is willing to pay him -- $9.232 million in 2019. If he wants to reject the pay cut and become a free agent, thinking he can get more on the open market, he is sadly mistaken

Gerry, over/under 13 sacks for me next season?
Gerry Dulac
1:36
Based on progression, you'd have to say over

Do you believe Juju is talented enough to be a true #1 wr? Tough to really gage given the AB effect, but lets not forget the kid is 22
Gerry Dulac
1:39
Really, how many teams have a "true" No. 1 like Antonio Brown? Yeah, Julio Jones and A.J. Green and Michael Thomas and a few others are "true" No. 1s, but how many more? Not many. JuJu is good enough to be a No. 1 receiver. And they will find another WR in the first or second round who will come in and be a good target for Ben Roethlisberger. They have been through this before w Mike Wallace, Plaxico Burress and even Martavis Bryant leaving. OK, they're not AB, but has it had any profound effect on No. 7? None whatsoever.

Fair to think Conner can take another step forward? Appears to be close to becoming a top 10 running back
Gerry Dulac
1:40
Sure. Look what he did in his first year as a starter. His production, yards per carry, TDs, , 100+ yard games, 20+ runs were all more than LeV Bell in 2017. He was more than a top 10 back through 12 weeks. He can be that again.

Hi Gerry,  What is up with Munchak leaving? Is this a sign of things falling apart under Tomlin?
Gerry Dulac
1:42
Not at all. Unless you missed Ed Bouchette's conversation w Munch yesterday, it was a family decision and had nothing to do AT ALL with what you and others who have no idea would suggest.

1:42
How do you like this receiver lineup for next year? JuJu,Chris Conley(Chiefs), Rogers,Washington,Switzer?
Gerry Dulac
1:43
I'm supposed to assume Chris Conley will be signed by the Steelers? If he is, Switzer might be gone, because you're not considering the WR they will draft No. 1 or No. 2 if AB is gone, which I assume he will.

Can you elaborate on the reports of Butler taking over OLB duties? Do you see this is a demotion? What do you see as the division or labor between he, Tomlin, and Austin?
Gerry Dulac
1:49
All he will be doing, if it comes to that, is coaching the outside LBs for those situations when the Steelers are playing in their base 3-4 defense, which is less than 25 percent of the time anymore. In other words, not a whole lot that would require Butler's time. When the Steelers are in their sub package defenses, the OLBs have the responsibilities for the most part of defensive ends, so they will be coached in those situations by the DL coach, Karl Dunbar. That's the division of labor to which you are referring. As for Teryl Austin, he was brought in to coach either the cornerbacks or the safeties, depending on how the duties will be split with Tom Bradley. There are 10-11 DBs on the roster, five to seven of whom are on the field at any given time. That is more than any other position on the team and requires more than one coach. Austin will have no more input in the defensive game plan than any other defensive assistant. Those who suggest otherwise have no idea what they're talking about.

Morgan Burnett and Bostic will be cut, yes? Need more impactful free agents this time around...
Gerry Dulac
1:50
Not sure about Burnett

Why does Tomlin still have a job after the team collapsed horribly and his playoff record is so poor?
Gerry Dulac
1:53
I think because he is a proven good coach. But maybe at some point that won't be good enough.

Gerry - Realistic that we trade AB To SF from Pick #2, Trade Down a bit and add some additional picks to secure DB, ILB and EDGE all in first 2 rounds ?
Gerry Dulac
1:55
Nothing is realistic cause you never know what other teams will offer as trade bait. And I severely doubt the 49ers would trade a No. 2 overall pick for a 31-year-old petulant, insubordinate, selfish wide receiver

This team is about to be a disaster we can’t lose both Bell or ab if you are going to trade ab get sf number 2 pick give our 20 pick get Fred Warner and there 2nd pick also I would sign bell long term u just don’t lose both players like that and I would draft Bosa  to replaced Dupree.  sign Dupree to be a back up line backer and with the 36 pick draft a wr or one of them tight ends what do u think I’m sure there will be goood ones availiable
Gerry Dulac
1:56
Way too many what-ifs and could-bes for me. But I can at least tell you this, I think you and everyone else should get prepared to see both 26 and 84 be gone from the Steelers. Best thing that can happen.

Is there a PR Dept in place that watches over these players when they join the Steelers?  If so they are not doing a good enough job.
Gerry Dulac
1:57
What, you want someone to baby-sit an a millionaire adult??

1:57
Gerry, if steelers don't get what they feel is adequate value in trade, what will they do with AB?
Gerry Dulac
1:59
In my opinion, there is only one thing they can do with him -- and that's trade him. I don't see any way imaginable in which they can bring him back next season after what he did -- both before the Bengals game and his childish, moronic behavior since that game.

Why don't the Steelers try to get Joe Flacco or Nick Foles?  then keep Brown, who makes any QB look good.
Gerry Dulac
1:59
You kidding?

1:59
what kind of WR do you think the steelers will replace AB with? a slot guy or someone who can stretch the field? Does that depend on their plan for Washington?
Gerry Dulac
2:00
A good one. You don't draft "slot" receivers on the first or second round. You draft playmakers that high.

Did Mike Tomlin do the firing of Joey Porter and letting go of James Saxon, or was that upper management?  If it was upper management is this a way to turn the heat up under the head coach?
Gerry Dulac
2:01
Basically speaking, Mike Tomlin is in control of his staff, especially with assistants. But sometimes decisions come from above.

Hi, Gerry- What would happen cap wise, etc, if AB decided to retire?
Gerry Dulac
2:01
Why, you think that's going to happen???

Thanks for your chat Gerry! Is there a philosophical change on the horizon for the steelers? Given that we will likely be without the best WR in the league, will we become a much more run heavy/good defense driven team?
Gerry Dulac
2:02
Nope. Not as long as they have No. 7. The team is built around him and will continue to be built around him, as it should be.
